[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31
1. Alpha 4 CD Live boots to the point that the desktop should load then all activity stops and nothing on the keyboard works. I've downloaded about three different daily builds of Alpha 4 Ubuntu with the same result. The CD's do run on my Compaq and my Via motherboard systems. When CD Live stops, of course, can't read any files or logs or anything else since the keyboard is dead except for power off. Note the screen background is either black or brown, and the cursor may move or not. The desktop background never loads. 2. Alpha 3 runs O.K (for an alpha). I've installed it several times. Upgrade everything results in 1. above. I've done that several times. This Thinkpad has run Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy, and Intrepid Alpha 3. 3. Alpha 3, upgrade everything else except Gnome 2, which is to say at Alpha 4 level for everything but Gnome 2, runs O.K. (for an alpha). I've done this twice. 4. Add just the upgrade for Gnome 2, nothing else, results in 1. above. 5. Alpha 4 CD Live Xubuntu runs O.K. for an Alpha. Kubuntu Alpha 4 runs O.K. for an alpha. No Gnome 2, no problem. 5. I'm dual booted from an Alpha 4 image for everything but Gnome 2 as I enter this comment. Browsing the other install, the one that stops when the Gnome desktop should load, the end of .xsession-errors follows. Looks to me like X found the desktop, which then never appears on the screen: ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Looking for: gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Found in: /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmAutostartApp: setting desktop filename to /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: read gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmStore: Adding object id /org/gnome/SessionManager/App1 to store ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Looking for: gnome-wm.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Found in: /usr/share/gnome/autostart/gnome-wm.desktop Let me know if I can look for anything else. This bug has been fixed for the most part in Intrepid, which is running warzone 2.1.0~1.beta4-2. [Bug 242505] Re: vmware kernel modules for 2.6.22-15 missing
Erny, a better process I just bumped into is outlined here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/36849 In essence, you install the vmware-server-kernel-source package and build it for the new kernel, then install the resulting package. I cannot say if this will work for all future versions of the kernel -- I suspect not -- but it would be pretty safe to say that it will work for 2.6.22-* versions at least. I should point out it now appears that fixing this bug should be trivial, given that a package such as vmware-server-kernel-source exists -- something which I didn't know until about 10 minutes ago -- and that it does not appear to be dependent on VMware to actually do anything. Perhaps there is a dependency in the vmware-server package that hasn't been configured correctly to force the kernel modules to be built -- but that is outside my area of expertise. Of course, the kicker might be that this is known *not* to work for other kernel versions and that this bug is serving as a place-holder to fix that issue. (For kernels in Hardy and Intrepid.) I'll investigate that... -- vmware kernel modules for 2.6.22-15 missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242505 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 91873] Re: eject -T doesn't close the tray
I have reproduced the original problem in the 2.1.5-6 version of eject included in the 8.04 release, and verified that the eject package in hardy-proposed, 2.1.5-6ubuntu1, does indeed successfully close the cdrom drive when 'eject -T' is invoked. The relevant strace output from the original version was so: open("/dev/scd0", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK)= 3 gettimeofday({1219707308, 553806}, NULL) = 0 ioctl(3, CDROMEJECT, 0) = -1 EIO (Input/output error) and the fixed version's strace looked like when -T was given: ioctl(3, CDROMEJECT, 0) = -1 EIO (Input/output error) gettimeofday({1219706590, 522464}, NULL) = 0 ioctl(3, CDROMCLOSETRAY, 0xb7eae0c6)= 0 exit_group(0) = ? Note that 'eject -t' in both versions only invokes the CDROMCLOSETRAY ioctl(). Also note that the original version of 'eject -T' would report the returned EIO error when successfully ejecting a closed drive, but the updated version, while also opening the door, silently ignores the returned EIO, matching the behavior both versions of eject without arguments on a closed drive. Here's the straace output from running 'eject' on a closed drive: open("/dev/scd0", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK)= 3 ioctl(3, CDROMEJECT, 0x3) = -1 EIO (Input/output error) ioctl(3, SG_GET_VERSION_NUM, 0xbf91f574) = 0 ioctl(3, SG_IO, 0xbf91f520) = 0 ioctl(3, SG_IO, 0xbf91f520) = 0 ioctl(3, SG_IO, 0xbf91f520) = 0 ioctl(3, BLKRRPART, 0xbf91f560) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument) close(3)= 0 exit_group(0) = ? It's unclear to me why the kernel would return EIO on a successful CDROMEJECT event, and it's also unclear to me eject is doing further queries on the device. I'm marking this bug as verification-done, because I think the fix causes eject -T to work in more situations than it does in the released version, and other invocations of eject continue to work as they did before, but it seems to me that the kernel<->eject interface needs to be re-examined. ** Tags added: verification-done ** Tags removed: verification-needed -- eject -T doesn't close the tray https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/91873 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 260474] Re: enabling ramdisk causes system monitor to close when clicking file systems tab
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 38230] Re: nautilus "create launcher" can't create links to directories
Hmmm, I've always found it messy to create "Shortcuts" to folders using nautilus. For example, I like to have a "shortcut" to my home folder or to "Filesystem" on the desktop... I can middle-drag the folder there, and get a link.. or type ln -s [shortcut] [folder] But then I have a link, so when I double click to open it will show as: "/home/username/Desktop/[Name of Link to Homefolder]" instead of "/home/username" Now, what I've found is that you can make a "Launcher" that points to nautilus [address of folder] then you can manually find an icon... Which brings me to the main problem with this: The icons FFS!! Finding an icon has got to be the worst implemented part of the GNOME DE... all the best, hope someone has a look at this bug sometime. -- nautilus "create launcher" can't create links to directories https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/38230 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 255255] Re: blkid library detects JFS partition as FAT32
Theodore, DFSee seems to have originated as an OS/2 partition management utility so there's no wonder it simulates OS/2 UHPFS.DLL/UJFS.DLL behaviour. I've made some tests and the problem seems to involve only those file systems (e.g. when creating an ext2/ext3/reiser partition DFSee simply fills the boot sector with F6). The reason for using FAT12/16 style pseudo-superblock seems to be quite simple: there was no FAT32 at the time HPFS was developed. So I guess your latest idea is correct: if a boot sector looks like FAT12/16 and contains "JFS " or "HPFS" at 0x36 then it is not FAT. However are you sure about memcmp(ms->ms_magic, "JFS ", 8) and memcmp(ms->ms_magic, "HPFS ", 8) ?
