I don't see how this is a debian-installer bug, since you're talking
about upgrading.

I've reassigned to hal since you mentioned it, but this could easily be
a linux bug too. Could you please be more verbose, including such things
as exact error messages you're seeing?

[Bug 267239] Re: DVD can't be used for upgrade, gzipped Packages file

2008-09-06 Thread Colin Watson
Targeted to Hardy; Intrepid is already fixed (bug 255545).

It's quite valuable in terms of space for us to be able to omit the
uncompressed files from CDs. Admittedly we could get away with leaving
them on the DVD, but the alternate CD would need this too and that's
very tight on space. Michael, could the fix for bug 255545 be backported
to hardy?

[Bug 114081] Re: DVD-RAM writer disappeared after upgrade to feisty

2008-09-06 Thread Serhiy Kachanuk
Same problem with interpid alfa5. LiveCD on but enters busybox and boot process
stops.
Adding all_generic_ide to livecd boot parameters helps it to boot, but then
system doesn't see my secondary hdd(hooked to same IDE controller as DVD), only
IDE DVD and SATA hdd.

Problem first appeared with original Feisy's kernel, but then upgrade to
2.6.20-16.28 helped. Then there was another one kernel update in Feisty
which had this problem again, so i am still using 2.6.20-16.28 in gutsy.

to setup the second head. Command xrandr shows only one output. Should I

[Bug 191027] Re: "Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument"

2008-09-06 Thread rybu
I just started getting the same problem. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.1 with
all the updates. Last update was yesterday but the problems started
today. The "switching to ALSA trick" seems to be working so far. I've
only been running 8.04.1 for a couple weeks now and had one other
problem -- an unexplained system crash earlier today. The crash
happened when I was out so I'm not sure exactly what caused it but it
seems to be sound related as the computer was playing the same "warning"
sound every 2 or 3 seconds.

[Bug 267345] [NEW] Process spinning in kernel in do_exit()

2008-09-06 Thread Justin Husted
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic

I've got a stuck totem process which is unkillable, apparently spinning
in do_exit(). I just hit "q" to exit in the normal manner, and it's
stuck, using 100% of CPU. The machine still responds to userspace
(hence this bug report).

The only thing particularly interesting here is that totem was playing a
movie over NFS.

This is a Compal CL56 laptop with a Pentium M processor (single core, no
SMP). The only other thing of note is that totem seems to crash on exit
most of the time in pulseaudio, in the pthreads code. Could this have
to do with page faults in multithreaded apps during shutdown or
something?

I suspect I will be unable to reproduce this, but in the hope that it's
useful, here are the stacks I gathered using sysrq:

[Bug 254075] Re: Tuxtype triggers an X crash on my hardware

2008-09-06 Thread Caroline Ford
BriLarks

Could you answer the following for me as I can't work on this without
any further information. Thanks!

@BriLarks does it do this on any other software? Could you tell me which
version of tuxtype you are using on which version of Ubuntu? Does it do
the same on tuxmath? Other games?

Could you look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting. Does control-alt-
backspace restart X?

Could you attach:

 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
~/.xsession-errors

Paste in output of lspci -nn | grep VGA

[Bug 267343] [NEW] Sound Stopped Working. Volume Control Missing From Movie Player. Audio Test Gives Error.

2008-09-06 Thread Nick GIbson
Public bug reported:

Recently my sound stopped working. I have recently done a kernel
upgrade (via the Update Manager), but am not certain that the two are
related. Here are the symptoms:

I can hear sound from my own microphone
Applications that should be able to generate their own sound (such as Totem)
show the volume control as disabled.
In the System->Preferences->Sounds there are four test buttons. Each provides
an error message. These messages are:

Sound Events->Sound Playback: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 !
audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open resource
for writing.

Music and Movies->Sound Playback: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 !
audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not
open resource for writing.

Audio Conferencing->Sound Playback: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 !
audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Could not
open resource for writing.

Audio Conferencing->Sound Capture: gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert !
audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Could not open resource for
writing.

Here is what I have tried:
Activated every possible volume control and ensured they are all active with
volume set to 90%
Searching for .asoundrc (That file does not exist on my system)
Restarting alsa-utils

also-info.sh output URI: http://www.alsa-

Output of uname -a > uname-a.log, sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log,
and dpkg -s linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r) >dpkg.log will be attached.

[Bug 267339] [NEW] wireless doesn't work after suspend

2008-09-06 Thread Kieran Fleming
Public bug reported:

I am using a Fujitsu U1010 laptop. When using the 2.6.25-5 kernel, suspend and
hibernate work fine, but in 2.6.27-1 and 2.6.27-2, after the system is resumed
the wireless stops working and can't connect to anything until the system is
restarted.
Curiously, running 'sudo s2both' works fine, it's just suspending through the
GUI that's the problem. Please tell me if there's anything more I can add.

[Bug 267342] [NEW] wine steam counter strike freeze

2008-09-06 Thread tomd123
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 with all the latest updates installed as of
9-7-08. I am using wine v.1.1.4. The problem is whenever I start
counterstrike 1.6 through steam, it will go through all the menu items,
load the game, connect, and it will let me play for a couple of minutes
and then it suddenly freezes the screen and loops the sound that was
currently playing. Nothing will get me out of this freeze, including
ctrl+alt+backspace. The only thing that worked was (alt+prt sc and
typing reisub). This bug really annoys me and keeps forcing me to boot
into xp every time someone wants to play.

[Bug 247417] Re: Email addresses can't be added to GMail in Epiphany browser

2008-09-06 Thread Sara
Thank you for your reply! Sure, I can supply that information. I logged
into my Gmail, and clicked the + button to add a contact. I entered in
the name, the e-mail address, and the telephone number of the contact
(just now I tried to enter EmperorLinux, for example). When I clicked
the save button, only the name of the contact (e.g. EmperorLinux) was
saved. The e-mail address and phone number did not appear. Trying again
and again does not change the result.

I'm not sure what category falls under (as far as debugging is
concerned, and I am new to linux), as, other than this problem with
GMail, Epiphany is perfectly functional.

If there's anything else I can add, I'm not sure what it is, except that
I'm using Xubuntu 8.04.1 now and the result of trying to add contact
information in Epiphany is identical to entering in Epiphany using
Ubuntu 8.04.1.

[Bug 267333] [NEW] dbus-send unable to send dict arguments

2008-09-06 Thread Tim Watt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

Package version: 1.1.20-1ubuntu2

Steps:
run /usr/bin/dbus-send --dest=org.freedesktop.ExampleName
/org/freedesktop/sample/object/name
org.freedesktop.ExampleInterface.ExampleMethod dict:string:int32:"one",1
(this is a simplified version of what dbus-send(1) shows as an example)

Actual results:
process 30340: arguments to dbus_message_iter_open_container() were incorrect,
assertion "(type == DBUS_TYPE_STRUCT && contained_signature == NULL) || (type
== DBUS_TYPE_DICT_ENTRY && contained_signature == NULL) || (type ==
DBUS_TYPE_VARIANT && contained_signature != NULL) || (type == DBUS_TYPE_ARRAY
&& contained_signature != NULL)" failed in file dbus-message.c line 2356.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.
Segmentation fault

Expected results:
no output (successful message send)

The problem is fixed in intrepid: in dbus-send.c, append_dict,
DBUS_TYPE_DICT_ENTRY should be sent with a NULL signature. If I port this
change into 1.1.20's source (in hardy), dbus-send works as expected.
See:
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=dbus/dbus.git;a=commitdiff;h=d7446ac003f63aca29624b42b55f13b64e19a77f

This must have been a fleeting bug in debian's (or upstream's) sources,
because none of the current debian versions (stable, testing, or
unstable) have the bad call in append_dict.

[Bug 252535] Re: provide a formatted form for launchpad's "needs-packaging" submissions

2008-09-06 Thread Tree MendUs
Brian,

Can this information be transferred to launchpad task that you have opened?
How can I access/view the task?

If a form is going to be designed then it might be helpful to solicit
further (non-compulsory information - NC), and provide separate fields
for information that might normally be included in "further information"
and "description"s (FI).

URL (main website)
URL other website (NC)
URL other website 2 (these provide backup in case the project changes its main
website)(NC)

reference to proof of license type drop down menu (GPL, GNU, etc, other)
URL(NC), or file in source code.

requirements(NC)
dependencies(NC)

Features(FI)

suggested category 1 (NC)
suggested category 2 (NC)
suggested category 3 (NC)

screen shot 1 (FI in attachment - URL from website)
screen shot 1 (FI in attachment - URL from website)

language(s) used for program (may be in a "tags" format). NC

When a form is designed, like this.

Add to Repos from Browser side bar.

Then an extremely effective method of using it, is to have used like search
engine pages, that sit in the sidebar of browsers. This would enable a user who
happens to come across a program they think might be useful for Ubuntu, to
quickly add it from their side bar.
The process (in future may even be done automatically in the form), would
prompt for a check in Ubuntu package repos, and for similar requests in
launchpad, then go on to present the form as outlined above.

[Bug 267332] [NEW] [needs-packaging] osmosis openstreetmap planet utility

2008-09-06 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu already has the JOSM package to help edit openstreetmap.org data
and the gosmore application for using the OSM data, so it might be
useful to add the osmosis package that can be very helpful in
manipulating large OSM datafiles.

On the osmosis page on openstreetmap.org's wiki
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Osmosis) osmosis is described
thusly:

Osmosis is a command line java app for processing OSM data. The tool
consists of a series of pluggable components that can be chained
together to perform a larger operation. For example, it has components
for reading from database and from file, components for writing to
database and to file, components for deriving and applying change sets
to data sources, components for sorting data, etc. It has been written
so that it is easy to add new features without re-writing common tasks
such as file or database handling.

[Bug 136465] Re: [Gutsy] cannot see the printer/s

2008-09-06 Thread jhansonxi
I'm encountering the same issue with 0.5.4 in Hardy (8.04.1).
Attempting to print results in a seg fault. The only messages displayed
in a terminal is a reference to invalid "A4" size. It may be a locale
issue as I'm in the USA and "letter" is the standard here, not "A4".

[Bug 146924] Re: "Time went backwards" + freeze for domU's with kernel 2.6.22-xen

2008-09-06 Thread James Blackwell
It sounds to me like this bug report is actually two different, but
possibly related, bugs. The first bug is time arbitrarily going
backwards on 2.6.22, which I think is fixed when using a 2.6.24 and
later domU. The second bug is a problem with saving/restoring domUs.

Does anyone agree?
