[Bug 385276] Re: Typo in package description

2009-06-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
When modifying an existing package, the best practice is to keep
whatever patchsystem the Debian packaging is already using. If the
Debian package uses direct modification of files , then you should
continue to do so.

In the dwdiff case, it doesn't use any patchsystem and you can see by
looking at the current .diff.gz that it already modified files outside
the debian/ directory. You should do the same.

Anyway, in your debdiff you patched man/dwdiff.1 directly so it's OK.
It's just your addition of "quilt" build-dependency that is unnecessary,
since you don't even call quilt from your debian/rules and you don't
ship any patches in debian/.

Could you please provide a new debdiff without the build dep change (and
the related changelog entry) ? Test that it builds and fixes both issues
?

[Bug 391496] [NEW] package linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic 2.6.28-13.44 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Public bug reported:

I was presented with the dialog to edit menu.lst. I pressed cancel by
accident (I think I was looking at the side-by-side comparison) and then
it crashed. Luckilly, it recovered automatically, but I don't know if I
now have the latest kernel or not.

[Bug 307477] Re: DVDRAM GSA-T50L will not write DVD's or CD's

2009-06-23 Thread WIGGMPk
Sorry for the second post, but its worth mentioning...

My first CD/DVD burner (internal SATA GSA-T50L) was working fine in
Windows XP, Vista, RC7

Was working relatively fine in Interpid with nautilus-cd-create (or
whatever that package is called)

Broke in Jaunty & the drive was physically replaced by ASUS with a brand
spanking new model.

The new drive burnt 1 DVD image and then stopped working.

[Bug 307477] Re: DVDRAM GSA-T50L will not write DVD's or CD's

2009-06-23 Thread WIGGMPk
I am having the same issue in Jaunty (2.6.28-11 & 2.6.28-13).

Put a blank CD/DVD into the drive, it automatically gets mounted.
Try to burn an image with any program (Brasero, growisofs, k3b, etc)
Fails to burn the image, drive locks and can NOT be eject with any
software/hardware methods.
After emergency ejection with paper clip, CD/DVD's will no longer automatically
mount.
The CD/DVD drive is no longer accessible to the system.

2009-06-23 Thread VladNistor
If you changed the server address before you updated (the primary quick
fix) then your settings were probably carried over to 2.5.7 and the
particular address may no longer work. I ran into this issue this

works. Could someone tell is if the new version use a different address?

[Bug 298005] Re: Ubuntu crashes and CAPS lock light flashes on HP G7000 if no mouse activity shortly after login

2009-06-23 Thread AceLan Kao
Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this
issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release -
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the issue remains
in Jaunty, Please run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic

If you could also test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 391494] [NEW] Setup crashed when it tried to modify menu.lst

2009-06-23 Thread Antoine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic

I first asked the install tool to do a 3 way merge of my menu.lst. I
think that is what it made it crash.

Then I asked the tool to install the packager version, but it didn't
work.

My menu.lst is simple. (here attached)

Would'nt it be more simple to add the new kernel's entry and let the user
decide whether he wants to run the new kernel or the old one, rather than
trying to update everything ?
This way, the user would have the ability to roll back to the old kernel if
there is an issue,or change its default kernel if there is none.

[Bug 389624] Re: Sync opendchub 0.7.15-1.1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2009-06-23 Thread Muharem Hrnjadovic
The debian maintainer changed a build dependency (from libcap-dev to

assumed a sync request was appropriate.

[Bug 376928] Re: Random system shutdowns during inactivity (Total power off) after upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04

2009-06-23 Thread pyGene
I have a system showing very similar (and unpredictable) shut off
behavior.

I noticed in my logs that motd was getting called via cron just as the
system seem to vanish. The next entry in the log was me rebooting the
box.

In this case, it always happened during inactivity, until this morning.
I ran

  r...@www:~# [ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ] && /usr/sbin/update-motd
2>/dev/null

repeatedly by up arrowing and running as fast as I could. after a few
seconds is just powered off, in a flash.

It's a 64bit server 9.04 Ubuntu install on a AMD 4800+ system with 4 GB
of corsair ram. System has never had any trouble up until now.

Re: [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2009-06-23 Thread Savvas Radevic
> Again, if you have a BETTER solution, then implement it.  Don't just
> talk about it.  Otherwise I'll keep advising people to do what works

I'd have to agree with this comment, Ubuntu is (or should be) all
about the human needs, not the "proper" thing to do (which seems to
take enough time to be implemented).

> Hacks are not fixes. Also, is this program even installed by default?
> Paper cuts are only for things installed by default.

I don't know about that, but the papercut specifications include
these: https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts
a) - bugs that impact standard workflows (like connecting to the
network, copying files, browsing folders, etc.), rather than
specialised or corner case workflows

It is a standard workflow, people install the nvidia driver all the
time. Even though nvidia-settings is in universe, nvidia-settings _is
suggested_ by System > Preferences > Display: "It appears that your
graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this
tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?"
(which opens up nvidia-settings)

b) - bugs that are easy to address, rather that ones that require
significant design or development efforts

I don't know and probably will not be the judge of this one, but if
the PolicyKit seems hard, there is the alternative issue of applying a
mere workaround for the time being, using gksu in the menu item.

c) - bugs that relate to usability and design (like size of the
notification bubbles), rather than broken software (e.g. notifications
flickering in fullscreen)

It is highly related to usability.

> I would say just making a full GUI app run as root is enough of a bug to
> not implement this 'fix'.

That's a bug *everyone* could live with, until the proper fix comes out.

> You are certainly welcome to advise them of your workaround for this
> bug. I just don't believe such a thing should be added to the package.

I have posted this as a papercut because it just is and there is an
easy solution (at least one of the available ones).

If we implement the gksu usage as an easy temporary solution, people
will have less to think about while fixing up their resolution issues.
This way, the developer would not be rushed into making a fix and
would make a properly defined fix with the PolicyKit patch.

Right now, I see an easy workaround, which you don't want to implement
just because it's not "proper", and a hard one, which will probably
take time to be implemented. It is a papercut issue to me and probably
(IMHO) some other people trying to help out their fellow humans how to
install their driver properly.

[Bug 391478] [NEW] 2.6.30-10 kernel drops to busybox

2009-06-23 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Public bug reported:

This has many chances to be a duplicate of bug 391245 but I'm reporting
separately since it's not sure. bug 391245 has been reproduced with a
karmic installation on a USB key, while my bug can be reproduced with
the internal hard drive of the laptop.

I just installed 2.6.30-10 kernel and my laptop now drop to busybox at boot.
2.6.30-9 kernel still works fine. If I boot without splash and quiet, linux
seems to initialize correctly and it suddenly echo many time the same line :
sleep: invalid number '0.1'

It then says :
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems : (see screenshot)

It also says :
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/f17... does not exist! Dropping to a shell.

However if I do a ls /dev/disk/by-uuid, the uuid is there, it exist and
there is no difference in the file name.

[Bug 390170] Re: System randomly restarts

2009-06-23 Thread Clive Rodeo
Ok, the crashes seem to happen more while I'm using Movie Player to
stream a radio .asx file...

The machine has been back to the shop for overnight testing, and passed
without a crash, but the only difference I can think of between the shop
and here, is Movie Player.

[Bug 256637] Re: ata3: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)

2009-06-23 Thread Mike of the Nile
Noticed that this had gone quiet but it's the error I now get. I had
this problem with 2.6.28-13-generic on 9.04. My symptom was this: I
would get the COMRESET message that everyone else gets, then the
filesystem(ext3) would be automatically remounted as read-only.
Eventually it wouldn't mount, citing "bad superblock". It worked under
a previous kernel(the last RT) but switching back to that kernel didn't
help either.

Since I didn't have any more time to throw at this, I did the quick-fix:

edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

find the "kernel" line of the in-use kernel.

add " noapic nosmp" to the end of the line.

Save, restart, pray.

Hope this helps someone. Not sure if smp and apic really boost the
speed of a system in the way that anyone would notice, though.

[Bug 391473] [NEW] In Ubuntu 9.04, Firefox crashes when closing with multiple active tabs

2009-06-23 Thread ananth.aravamudan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I use Acer 4530 Laptop with AMD Athlon X2 chipset
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04.
Since the upgrade, I am facing the following problem with Firefox 3.0:
When I have multiple tabs open, and I try to close Firefox, it prompts me
whether I want to save the tab information. Irrespective of whether I choose
"Quit" or "Save and Quit", the application crashes. The only way out is to
power cycle. Due to this, I have not been able to save any logs.
This happens for all web-sites, the only thing that matters is how many tabs
are open.
If I close all but one tab and quit, it works just fine.
I did not have this issue in 8.10

"ISO" and "drive" do seem potentially confusing, but I like your idea
of "Mount disc image as folder". However, since it is a context menu,
I'm not sure if we need to give the thing you have just clicked on a
name as the context was already defined by the user's action, "this
file". What about just "Mount as folder"?

I am running kernel 2.6.30-10 generic.. the most recent one released..

Thank you

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-23 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for the comments. I'm also assigning this to the grub package.
Please check the updated description and make sure it accurately
describes your bug.

If you shutdown through the terminal by typing:
shutdown now -r

does the grub menu load when you reboot?

Also, does grub load normally ever (do you dual boot normally)?

Thanks

** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Low

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
+ After choosing "shutdown," grub does not load upon reboot.

- On my toshiba tecra a9 laptop in jaunty/gnome with all updates applied,
- the shutdown option appears to actually suspend or hibernate. I am
- guessing this is what happens as grub doesn't load when you resume the
- computer.
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1) choose shutdown
+ 2) turn the computer on
+ 3) computer loads into Ubuntu
+
+ What should happen:
+ grub menu appears after reboot
