[Bug 207198] Re: Adobe Flash player 9 displays CJK text incorrectly

2009-09-02 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I still experience at least occasional problems even in karmic. One
example is http://www.jal.com/ which displays only squares in FF. I
find it interesting that chromium browser on the same computer displays
the same page just fine.

[Bug 411533] Re: users and groups prog blocked on first launch

2009-09-02 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Cool! This problem must have appeared in Karmic, since in previous
releases the backends were started at boot time before they were
actually needed (which is wrong BTW). But I really don't see how it
could affect some users and not all of them. And still I don't have seen
other reports about that.

Were you able to reproduce the bug with a clean Karmic install in a VM?
I'd expect so, but...

I'll do some research, and make this fix available by the next release,
which should be in Karmic. Thanks for your patience!

[Bug 420405] Re: "On This Computer" account doesn't disappear if disabled

2009-09-02 Thread marco.pallotta
Well Pedro, consider that it's not mandatory that "on this computer"
account is the default one. So you can create for many reasons other
accounts and you only want to display the default. For some reasons "on
this computer" accounts cannot be renamed (bug #399167) and hidden.

[Bug 422869] Re: fsck halts bootup when checked file has timestamp in the future from other Ubuntu installation

2009-09-02 Thread Scott Ritchie
I received my laptop with a windows installation on its first hard disk.
I installed Jaunty on the second disk and never booted into Windows on
the first, so I guess it was dual boot of sorts (albeit entirely
different disks/filesystems)

When I later installed Karmic I wiped the Windows disk to install it on
top of.

I turns out that if I do 'dpms force off' then after a few minutes the

I think this is a recent regression in karmic, or maybe I just haven't
noticed...

Just chiming in that it used to work on my laptop, too, but has been

[Bug 389040] Re: Realtek ALC272 not working in 9.04 but its working under 8.10

2009-09-02 Thread Chris Starling
Installed new kernel on my jaunty setup:
$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.31-10.30~lp389040oga1-generic

1) playback through internal speakers: OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through
headphones): OK
3) recording through the internal mic: Not OK
4) recording through an external mic: OK

This is with no "model=" set, however setting "model=toshiba" made no
difference.

[Bug 423534] [NEW] Select sound output from gnome-volume-control-applet menu

2009-09-02 Thread Viktor Petrov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

This is not a bug. Set it please to wishlist.

I've made some changes in gnome-media package for ease of switching the
sound output in cases where you have more than one sound output. Now
there is sub-menu in the gnome-volume-control-applet menu where you can
choose the current sound output. This is very useful if you have a
bluetooth headset. Menu will show up only when there is more than one
audio output devices.

I've contacted gnome-media maintainer Marc-André Lureau. He recommended me to
register it as a bug on bugzilla.gnome.org, which i did.
Bug:#593752
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=593752

Also he said that this will not be in the 2.28 because it is in UI/string
freeze.
Maybe it is possible to get it into Ubuntu karmic?

Attached patch file with changes made. Just get gnome-media source
package, drop patch into package's debian/pathces directory and build
it.

Here you can see how it looks in action:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/225762/select-sink-submenu-screenshot.png

Here you can take a ready-compiled packages for karmic:

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/225762/gnome-media/gnome-media_2.27.90-0ubuntu1%7Eviks1_i386.deb

[Bug 394402] Re: 32MB r200 DRI Slow - Fails to allocate texture

2009-09-02 Thread Pat Suwalski
Indeed, I grabbed the karmic build from 20090902, ran it as a live CD.
This didn't have an xorg.conf, and the generated Xorg.0.log indicates
that XAA was loaded automatically in lieu of EXA.

I then proceeded to try Firefox, but it crashes on startup, probably
because the window is quite large and the compositing window manager ran
out of video ram. But that's a different issue.

[Bug 423532] [NEW] lcd backlight never stays off

2009-09-02 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I think this is different to bug 71368:

I have a thinkpad X61s running Karmic. If I run 'xset dpms force off'
then the screen turns off properly. However, if I set in the power
preferences that the screen should turn off after 5m, then it goes black
but never shuts down the backlight.

[Bug 423525] [NEW] "IBus daemon is not started" message unhelpful

2009-09-02 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus

Karmic recently(?) added an "iBus Preferences" item to the Preferences
menu. If you click it, you get a dialog saying "IBus daemon is not

if they want to or not, when there's no explanation what an IBus daemon
is?

2009-09-02 Thread Matthias Andersson
The only way I've been able to install Ubuntu 9.04 on my Acer Travelmate
5530G is by using the alternate dvd. I can't remember all the steps I had to
take to get the system to work, the installer complained about a buggy ACPI,
devices not ready (ata1 & ata2) and so on. I'm not sure what percentage of
the problems encountered are due to the laptop itself.
Cheers,
Matthias Andersson

[Bug 53974] Re: 'strace -ff -c -o filename' spits out null output

2009-09-02 Thread Steve Beattie
In newer strace's, when both -c and -ff are invoked, strace returns the
following error: "strace: -c and -ff are mutually exclusive options".
This is also now documented in the strace(1) manpage with:

-ffIf the -o filename option is in effect, each processes trace
is written to filename.pid where pid is the numeric process
id of each process. This is incompatible with -c, since no
  per-process counts are kept.

Given that the current behavior notifies the user won't do what is
requested, and it is documented in the strace manpage, closing as Fix
Released.Thanks!

[Bug 423518] [NEW] video-all metapackage includes many useless drivers on armel

2009-09-02 Thread Matt Sealey
Public bug reported:

armel (and ppc) architectures include the xserver-xorg-video-all package
for graphics.

Inside this metapackage is described every xorg video driver available
in the standard distro; however many of these cards are exceedingly rare
on these platforms. For example, vga and vesa are not very useful.
Several of the drivers are very rare even on i386 architectures (and it
would be practically unheard of to see them on x64, too).

The package should be knocked down to the bare essentials of the most
common drivers for the appropriate architecture in order to save space
on installation images. If users require such graphics cards, perhaps
the video-all package should not pull dependencies but instead udev
should notice a video card was plugged since last boot, and fetch the
appropriate driver instead of lumping them all into the system, similar
to the way codecs are installed?

Ironically I can't even find the armel packages for vesa or vga in
ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports pool (not main, universe, multiverse..) so
i wonder why rootstock manages to pull them in or why they are installed
on a Babbage using the latest karmic netboot?

This is weirdness that should be sorted out.

[Bug 422110] Re: stickynotes_applet crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-09-02 Thread Andres E. Rodriguez Lazo
Hey guys.

I've managed to get the stickynotes applet icon added to the bar,
however it fails to add new notes. The way I've managed to add it was by
removing the previously created $HOME/.gnome2/stickynotes_applet file.
After it has been removed, I added the applet and the icon was shown
there and no error displayed. However, when trying to add a new note,
the error was showed again.

I did the following and got the attached output (the output was given to me
when trying to add a new note):
- I installed the gnome-applet-dbg package.
- remove all the instances of the sticky notes on the panel.
- run gdb as: gdb /usr/lib/gnome-applets/stickynotes_applet
- execute run inside gdb
- right click on the panel and add the sticky notes applet to the panel
- right click on the sticky notes applet, and add a new note.

Hope this helps. Btw Pedro, if you have time to show me how to fix this,
let me know since I would love to learn. Cheers.

Confirmed. Same problem.

However it happened on my usual user account. I had 4 workspaces. Now
there are only 2 and the workspace switcher doesn't allow to change it

[Bug 423515] [NEW] Macbook Pro 5,2 Express Card Slot IRQ 0 Error

2009-09-02 Thread SlickT10
Public bug reported:

I cannot load Express cards without getting irq errors such as this one
for the Ubiquiti SRX Wireless card:

[   12.429860] ath5k_pci :06:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 0 (level, low) -> IRQ 0
[ 12.429868] ath5k_pci :06:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 12.429969] ath5k_pci :06:00.0: registered as 'phy0'
[ 12.429972] ath5k phy0: request_irq failed
[ 12.429980] ath5k_pci :06:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
[ 12.429984] ath5k_pci: probe of :06:00.0 failed with error -16

Ive tried multiple cards, all with similar results. I am dual booting a
Macbook Pro 5,2. Ive also had extensive troubleshooting sessions with
other experts, and the fault seems not to be in the Modules. I know my
express card slot works in OSX, and the cards work in other
circumstances. Just to make sure I tried the ubuntu live cd on another
comupter and had the express card inserted. It worked fine. I also tried
BackTrack, a security suite built on ubuntu, and had injection working
without further todo. The problem is tied to this slot in linux. None of
the hardware seem to be defective.

Look at the related question for more information that I provided
earlier.

Any help would be supremely appreciated. I will attach dmesg's for other
cards as I am able.

Thanks

[Bug 416093] Re: karmic hangs during booting

Hi Chuck, I'm attaching the file you ask for.

As i said before I decided to remove samba in order to properly boot. So
to generate the attached file I proceed to re-install samba, I could
check that the workaround is not working anymore, now is not possible to
boot with samba installed.

I hope you find this info useful.

[Bug 421392] Re: Desktop effects disabled after connection 2nd monotor

2009-09-02 Thread Travis Watkins
This actually is a hardware limitation. When your Virtual size is larger
than 2048 in any direction DRI is disabled so of course compiz and any
other 3D apps are either not going to work or run slowly. Based on your
issues with scrolling it sounds like it also disables all other
acceleration as well.

Basically, you cannot have desktop effects (or desktop acceleration of
any kind, apparently) and use a second monitor or even an xorg.conf that
would allow you to plug in the second monitor at any point.
