[Bug 857326] Re: Selecting another preferred language in Lubuntu is confusing

2011-09-27 Thread Bernard Decock
Gunnar, thank you very much for your response.

First of all, I can see that chinese is installed in Lubuntu as well as in
Linux Mint Katya (See screendumps). Notice that my
preferred language = ducth (nederlands) and this language is active, but is
greyed out?

When I start the language-selector after reboot, I get a crash (bug
859961).

ll /usr/share/locale-langpack reveals that nor "deutsch" nor "chinese"
is installed.

After regenerating the locales, both "deutsch" and "chineses" are still in the
selector (dutch is still greyed out, although it is
my preferred language. I can't select it neither ... dialog doesn't respond to
the selection (due to the 859961 bug?)

>> After logging off, the preferred laguage wansn't changed. One has to
>> reboot the system before it's getting changed

>No, that's a misconception. If you change the user language from Dutch
to English and log out, you end up at the login >screen. If you log in
again instantly, you should see English as the display language.

Actually I switched the preferred language, logged off and logged back in.
Language wasn't changed. Only after reboot did the changes take place (can't
test this now, because the language-selector-dialog doesn't react on a
selection).
When I changed the language, I pressed "apply systemwide"-button. (Maybe this
option requires a reboot?)

[Bug 861175] [NEW] krunner doesn't react on Alt-F2 anymore in oneiric beta2

2011-09-27 Thread Thomas Bleher
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded my kubuntu system from Natty to Oneiric, and now Alt-F2
doesn't open the command toolbar anymore. This is quite annoying as this
is easily my most frequently used shortcut, to start a new program.

Update: I just saw that now krunner processes where running on the
system. After starting krunner manually from a konsole window, Alt-F2
runs again.

The output of krunner (maybe this helps?):

I should also add, that this problem happened after a clean reboot into the
Oneiric system, so there should be no leftovers from Natty. I also noticed that
there was a notification that Nepomuk was unable to start (for reasons I
immediately forgot, because I do not use it).

[Bug 861171] [NEW] Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open

2011-09-27 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

Selecting shutdown from the greeter does nothing when multiple accounts
are open.

This is because the lightdm user (which the greeter runs as) does not
have permission to shutdown while sessions are open. Inside a normal
session this would just return you to the login screen.

The solution is either for the indicator to say "not allowed" or to run
a PolicyKit frontend in the greeter than can get the required
permissions to perform the shutdown.

[Bug 856884] Re: Unity sets the wrong metacity keyboard shortcut defaults

2011-09-27 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I'm unassigning myself, in case someone is able to fix this before I get
to it and figure out what's going on.

** Summary changed:

- Running unity --reset breaks metacity keyboard shortcut defaults
+ Unity sets the wrong metacity keyboard shortcut defaults

** Description changed:

+ UPDATE: This affects first login of new users also.
+
  Running unity --reset breaks Alt-F2 for the run command, Meta+D to show
  desktop, and Alt+F1 to show the main menu. I believe Unity itself
  ignores these metacity settings, but this breaks GNOME Shell & other
  similar sessions.

  See also
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/1:0.9.5.94+bzr2803-0ubuntu4
  which I guess "fixed" the Ctrl-Alt-T shortcut.

  TEST CASE
  1. cd ~/.gconf/apps
  2. mv metacity metacity-old
  3. unity --reset
  4. Within a minute or so, a new metacity folder is created
- 5. cat metacity/global_keybindings/%gconf.xml
+ 5. cat metacity/global_keybindings/%gconf.xml

-
-   disabled
-

  What should happen:
  I think unity --reset should delete these strings which will reset settings
to their defaults instead of setting new, wrong settings.

sata chipsets have the same problem:

   1c00, 1c01 (6 Series/Cougar Point)

[Bug 626254] Re: after remote login language for menus not good

2011-09-27 Thread Timo Ketola
I'm sure I'll get along armed with .profile and friends. At the same
time I'm sure that there will be a lot of confused users when they are
hit with this feature. It would be very nice if FreeNX session
acknowledged GNOME/GDM settings.

Regarding my situation, there is still minor things. For example Skype
and DavMail doesn't blend nicely in the GNOME panel. They are enclosed
in a white box.

[Bug 578045] Re: Upgrading packaged Ubuntu application unreasonably involves upgrading entire OS

2011-09-27 Thread manny
@Alexander

Stability is taken into consideration (for example i doubt they will
offer alpha or beta software). But the point here is to give users
choice.

Like in every other OS, the user is used to choosing which version he
wants / needs.

He/she can either stay with what he has, update to the new, or un-
install and revert back just in case.

Right now the LTS has software that's almost 2 years old... Hunting down
PPAs is not fun, obvious or friendly to new users.

>From the blueprints the plans and actions taken will not totally solve
the problem of course, but its a good start and should greatly improve
the situation if done correctly.

[Bug 754000] Re: Running Unity disables Xorg's 3-finger click support (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Roland Dreier
Agreed. I have an Apple magic trackpad that I occasionally play with,
and this issue / design choice makes it pretty unusable with current
Unity. The multitouch gestures for moving windows are great and all,
but what's the substitute for "highlight text with click and drag, and
then middle click to paste" -- catering to all backgrounds is great, but
what about old school X users? Also as others mention, middle click to
close tabs in Firefox is pretty useful too.

[Bug 810327] Re: [Fujitsu Amilo] Synaptics touchpad ceases functioning after suspend and resume

2011-09-27 Thread David Wonderly
I also have a Dell Vostro V13 and am dealing with this issue. I have
found a decent workaround for it though.

What you want to do is make a script that will execute on resume.

Have a look at folder /etc/pm/sleep.d/ - all scripts within this folder
are automatically run as root-user after/before suspend or hibernate.

The script needs to fit this example:

#!/bin/bash
case "$1" in
hibernate|suspend)
ACTION BEFORE SUSPEND/HIBERNATE
;;
thaw|resume)
ACTION AFTER RESUME
;;
*)
;;
esac
exit $?

I had already made this script as ps.sh:

#!/bin/bash
rmmod psmouse
modprobe psmouse

So, I just tossed the two together and this is how it works:

sudo touch /etc/pm/sleep.de/99-touchpad-restart.sh
sudo chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.de/99-touchpad-restart.sh
sudo nano /etc/pm/sleep.de/99-touchpad-restart.sh

#!/bin/bash
case "$1" in
thaw|resume)
/home/darkwingduck/ps.sh>/dev/null
;;
*)
;;
esac
exit $?

Works like a charm. I know it's not a perm fix, but it works.

Thanks Paul! It is not worth introducing a delta to Debian for this
minor issue, and Oneiric is currently in string freeze anyway (package
descriptions are translated, too). I forwarded your patch to Debian, so
that it can be applied there, and trickle back down to Ubuntu.

Thank you!

libjpeg-turbo package is available as an alternative to libjpeg. It's
desirable especially
on ARM architecture for performance reasons. We just need to install the package
to make any software using it. Unfortunately, there's no plan to merge back with
libjpeg in a near future...
With regard to bugs, we volunteer to do the job. I prepared an ITP for
Debian as well,
making it easier to update in the future. The package will be treated
like any other:
if it isn't maintained properly, it will be removed.
More over, the upstream is active and supportive.

Please, ack the FFe.

[Bug 851691] Re: [FFE] Add support for U1 in the music lens

2011-09-27 Thread Martin Pitt
I tried this with the current PPA packages. Search results were indeed
retrieved rather quickly. However, when clicking on a result, banshee
opens, hangs for some 15 seconds with a blank window, and then puts you
into the "music collection" folder, not into the web shop. When I then
click on "ubuntu one store", I get a window "create an ubuntu one
account" for about one second, then it goes away again (crash?), and
nothing further happens.

This was tested in a guest session, i. e. with a clean user account.

[Bug 849337] Re: FFe: include libjpeg-turbo, a derivative of libjpeg that uses SIMD instructions and additional optimizations

2011-09-27 Thread Ricardo Salveti
While this was not heavily tested with the Ubuntu images, it's enabled
by default at the Linaro Ubuntu images for 2 releases already, and we
didn't find any major issue with it. From my point of view it's fine to
have a proper security review first, but having it enabled at Firefox
and Chromium by default is probably a good indication that it's not
going to cause us a lot of troubles.

I don't think much of this code will end up at upstream, as it was
forked for quite a while already basically because upstream was dead.
The reason to enable it at universe is to properly identify if it's a
valid option to enable it by default later, as already done by other
distros and once more users are actually using it, we can easily
identify the benefits later on.

[Bug 861143] [NEW] unity 3d firefox window borders disappear

2011-09-27 Thread Mahendra
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded to Oneiric Ocelot beta1.

By default, I logged in to unity 3d interface. I use firefox version 8
(aurora).

* I have two windows of firefox running (with around 190 tabs).
* When I maximize or un-maximize my firefox windows, the window title bar
disappears on one of the windows.
* So, I have to use keyboard short cuts for minimize or maximize operations

Also, I noticed that when this problem happens, my task switcher (alt-
tab) works weirdly. If I go to firefox, evolution etc. on the task
switcher, the window of that app does not come up. It remains in a
minimized state on the side bar.

The only way to recover from this problem is to quit/kill firefox and restart
again, but the problem appears in a short while.
Alternately, I have switched to Unity 2d and the problem is gone.

This problem is not seen in chrome for eg. I saw some similar behaviour
with evolution and other apps but I am not sure of what the exact
behaviour was.

[Bug 861132] [NEW] setenv ("NAME", NULL) corrupts environment

2011-09-27 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

setenv ("NAME", NULL) corrupts the environment. It doesn't seem
specified what the function should do when value is NULL, but the code
does check for it - it just does the wrong thing:

stdlib/setenv.c:
...
__add_to_environ (name, value, combined, replace)
...
  const size_t vallen = value != NULL ? strlen (value) + 1 : 0;
...
  memcpy (new_value, name, namelen);
  new_value[namelen] = '=';
  memcpy (&new_value[namelen + 1], value, vallen);
...

i.e. the new value is set to "NAME=" without the trailing nul character.

Found in bug 861123 where indicator-datetime does a:
x = g_strdup (getenv ("NAME"));
unsetenv ("NAME");
// do something
setenv ("NAME", x);

While avoiding code duplication is good, I don't think changing the
browsers is something we're willing to do.

Is this valid even for a package at universe? AFAIK this was main only.

When I select Greek locale in Ubiquity, I do get the keyboard icon in my
default desktop view.

And IMHO that new keyboard icon which wasn't there on previous versions
is just consuming vital panel space which is where applications main
menus are displayed. I don't need the icon to realize that [En]/[El] is
where I have to click to switch keyboard layouts.

Gnome classic had two panels and never used such an icon; Unity has only
one (overloaded) panel. Please don't waste the space. I think it would
be much better if the keyboard icon was completely removed.

Well, if a discussion at the release meeting, between 2 members of the
release team (with one being the release manager itself) saying that
they agree on the FFe is not enough, then sorry for bringing this up
this way.

[Bug 861140] [NEW] unity 3d display switch does not work

2011-09-27 Thread Mahendra
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot beta1

The default desktop was unity 3d. I have an Alienware M15x with an
Nvidia card and I use nvidia-settings for switching my display to a
monitor connected to my VGA port.

When I enable by monitor (on the VGA adaptor) using unity (3d), the
display blanks out or some garbled display appears. After 15 seconds,
things reset and are back to normal.

Switching display works well if I fallback to unity 2d. (at the login
prompt)
