libjpeg-turbo package is available as an alternative to libjpeg. It's desirable especially on ARM architecture for performance reasons. We just need to install the package to make any software using it. Unfortunately, there's no plan to merge back with libjpeg in a near future... With regard to bugs, we volunteer to do the job. I prepared an ITP for Debian as well, making it easier to update in the future. The package will be treated like any other: if it isn't maintained properly, it will be removed. More over, the upstream is active and supportive.
