[Bug 1933716] Re: Black screen on boot after stable update
Just updated to 5.11.0-38-generic on my ProBook 450 G6 with an i7-8565U processor and both displays are back to working again. On 20.04 focal. 5.11.0-37-generic did not work, so it was something that was part of the -38 update that fixed the issue for me. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1933716 Title: Black screen on boot after stable update To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1933716/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1933716] Re: Black screen on boot after stable update
Just to add a little more information, I have the same issue with a HP ProBook 450 G6 with an i7-8565U processor. I am running 20.04 and have had to stick with the 5.8.0-55-generic kernel because anything newer (e.g. 5.8.0-59-generic) causes this bug to rear its ugly head. I can set GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset" in the /etc/default/grub file and get the main monitor to display, but then external monitors no longer work.

I confirmed that the version of samba in the xenial-proposed repository (version 2:4.3.11+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.16) does allow the server to start with a %U in the include line while the server role is set to active directory domain controller. [Bug 1583324] Re: Samba won't start when an include statement in smb.conf has a variable substitution
With the latest version (4.3.11+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.13) I still get failures when I try to startup samba with an include that contains %U. I think the difference is that I'm using samba as an AD DC. So the service is started with systemctl (re)start samba-ad-dc instead of the smbd and nmbd services. The watered down smb.conf is: [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP realm = AD.WORKGROUP.COM netbios name = SERVER1 server role = active directory domain controller server services = s3fs, rpc, nbt, wrepl, ldap, cldap, kdc, drepl, winbindd, ntp_signd, kcc, dnsupdate idmap_ldb:use rfc2307 = yes include = /etc/samba/smb.conf.%U [netlogon] path = /var/lib/samba/sysvol/ad.workgroup.com/scripts read only = No [sysvol] path = /var/lib/samba/sysvol read only = No Samba will refuse to start with the above smb.conf unless the include line is removed or changed to a static file. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1583324 Title: Samba won't start when an include statement in smb.conf has a variable substitution To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1583324/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1583324] [NEW] Samba won't start when an include statement in smb.conf has a variable substitution
Public bug reported: Samba refuses to start when the smb.conf file contains an include line with a variable substitution like "include = /etc/samba/smb.conf.%U" According to the man page for smb.conf, all but a few specific variable substitutions should work. include (G) This allows you to include one config file inside another. The file is included literally, as though typed in place. It takes the standard substitutions, except %u, %P and %S. The parameter include = registry has a special meaning: It does not include a file named registry from the current working directory, but instead reads the global configuration options from the registry. See the section on registry-based configuration for details. Note that this option automatically activates registry shares. I wish some effort were put into fixing this bug, but if that isn't the case, please at least read the whole post before answering and deciding that it isn't an issue. This could be a nvidia bug, it most definitely is not a compiz bug. Read the first post. Nothing about a white screen, it was a black screen that was frozen. Some posts down further explain that it occurs on Kubuntu with no compiz even installed. It has to be a bug that is related to xorg, which could be nvidia or not. [Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen
I just tried switching to the nv driver. Same problem. I get a blank, white screen with a large underscore cursor in the upper left hand corner. I'm using Kubuntu Fiesty to clarify and I did a little more testing. I noticed that when when I'm in the first session I'm using (:0, vt7), but when I start a "new" session with the switch user feature it makes the new session (:0, vt9) and skips over 8. When I logout from the session on vt9, I get the blank screen. If I press Alt+F8, the screen doesn't change at all. If I press Alt+F9, I get a black screen instead of white but with the same underscore cursor flashing in the upper left corner. If I press Alt+F7, I'm returned to my first session on vt7 like I stated in the earlier post. To take this a bit further, if I switch users twice (start 3 sessions), I will have sessions running on vt7, vt9, and vt10. When I logout of vt10, I will be correctly taken back to vt9, but then a logout from vt9 then takes me to the blank white screen (that I think is vt8 which has nothing on it) and then I have to press Alt+F7 to get back to the first (vt7) session. I do also have to add that I don't think that it is a good idea to have the switch virtual terminal shortcuts to just Alt+Fx when from within a KDE session, Ctrl+Alt+Fx is required to switch terminals (which I can add, if I press Ctrl+Alt+F8 right now I will get the blank white screen, but I will have to use just Alt+F7 to get back here). -- Switch User freezes at blank screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112518 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I do use the 3D acceleration for a number of games though, so I won't be able to use the nv driver permanently. But at least it would help track down the bug. I had the same setup on OpenSUSE 10.2 and never had any problems with it. Maybe it might have something to do with the way the nvidia driver is installed and enabled. [Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen
I have the same problem, but I think I can add some more information. It appears that the logout is not switching back to the previous virtual terminal as it should. If I use Alt+Fx where x is the virtual terminal with a current active session (default virtual terminal is F7), it will bring back up that session asking for a password (locked session dialog) just like it should have done automatically when I logged out. I'm not sure why it responds to Alt+Fx and not Ctrl+Alt+Fx, but I assume that this is the way the Kubuntu developers have compiled KDM. I hope this will help track down the source of this issue so it can be solved and corrected, but at least in the meantime, it can be used as a work around. [Bug 102719] Re: X server crash doesn't fall back to console
Yes, it is the "splash" option that must be giving the blank screen. When I remove the splash (and quiet) option I don't get the blank screen. However all is still not well. While I don't get the blank screen, I don't get a proper login prompt either. I can see the output from the startup sequence and the screen just sits there where the last startup item ended. I can then type my username and hit enter and then my password and enter which will take me to a standard tty1. Hope this helps. [Bug 102719] Re: X server crash doesn't fall back to console
I came from Red Hat and variants in which runlevel 3 doesn't start X from init. So I was, and I know I shouldn't, assuming that Ubuntu/Debian would be the same as far as that goes. I was editing the grub entry before booting to start in runlevel 3 and during the editing I also removed the splash and quiet options. Maybe I'm just getting lucky and one of them is causing the blank screen. The xorg.conf problems were two different issues. I tried installing the NVIDIA driver manually and also had the kernel-restricted-modules package installed which seems to cause a conflict. For some reason the kernel thinks at bootup that it will be loading the 7184 (legacy) NVIDIA driver and when it finds the new 9755 driver it crashes X. This I corrected by removing the restricted-modules package and then it worked, but my resolution wasn't what I wanted. So I manually edited the modes in my xorg.conf file and forgot a set of quotation marks which gave me the second X crash. If I can provide any other details please let me know. I know about changing ttys with --. This is part of the problem. It doesn't work. Only a blank screen with an underscore cursor in the upper left corner that does nothing. No login. No commands. Nothing. I realise that GDM is supposed to send you to a tty console. GDM may work this way in Ubuntu. However, KDM doesn't do this. I believe the bug may be in KDM. I kind of mentioned this before with the fact that even in runlevel 3 it doesn't start correctly. This is because KDM still tries to run in runlevel 3, which it probably shouldn't, and then after it fails, I can login, but do not actually get a login prompt. ** Changed in: Ubuntu Status: Rejected => Unconfirmed -- X server crash doesn't fall back to console https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/102719 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 102719] X server crash doesn't fall back to console
Public bug reported: I had some problems with my xorg.conf which stopped the X server from starting correctly. The problem is that when it fails to start, I am left with a blank screen that is unusable. I have to restart in runlevel 3 to get to a console (and even then it doesn't start correctly. It appears that kdm is not releasing and allowing the console to start. Also, I would like to see better use of the "Console Login" feature in kdm. With openSUSE, when you select "Console Login" from the kdm menu, it kills the x server and drops you back to the console. After you logout of the console, it restarts the x server and kdm for you automatically which is a very nice feature. [Bug 97646] Re: HPLIP setup new device picks wrong driver
** Description changed: Binary package hint: hplip I tried to install my two printers using the HPLIP Toolbox "Setup New Device...". One is a HP OfficeJet 4200 series which the HPLIP wizard chooses to install an OfficeJet 9100 series ppd file for. The other is a HP DeskJet 9600 series printer which the wizard chooses to install a LaserJet 9000 series ppd file for. It is choosing these "wrong" ppd files because the correct ppd files are not available. This is easily remedied by installing the "hpijs-ppds" package. I believe it would be a lot more common for the average home user to have one of the two printers I have rather than the ones that are available by default. I propose that the "hpijs-ppds" package should be installed by default when the "hplip" package is installed. [Bug 84717] Re: SRU: updates necessary for Kubuntu Upgrade Tool in Edgy
Hello all, I didn't have Edgy installed on my system to start with, so my experience might not be a fair comparison. I loaded Edgy just to try the upgrade tool. When I finished loading Edgy, I did all the upgrades available in the default repositories (i.e. no universe or multi-verse packages enabled). I then added the "edgy-proposed" repository and did a Full Upgrade. After that Adept would not restart, so I had to reboot. After the reboot, I started Adept and the Upgrade Distro tool appeared which I then ran. It upgraded the system to Fiesty without any glitches. Worked great from this type of setup.
