[Bug 656142] Re: ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load
The root cause is the mounting of ecryptfs on top of ecryptfs, which possible similar to Bug #277578. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656142 Title: ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ecryptfs/+bug/656142/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 656142] Re: ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load
Hi, Dustin. Thanks for following on. Yes, I was mounting ecryptfs on top of ecryptfs. The lower mount was the version ubuntu does on login to mount my home directory. On top of that, I'd mounted with passthrough=no. A work-around was to move the the encrypted files for the upper mount from $HOME/.common/ to /home/common/ and then to mount that to $HOME/common/. So I believe this bug is related to the two-level deep ecryptfs mount. I never saw real data corruption. Sometimes programs would report corrupted data (corresponding to the EIO lines in /var/log/messages), but a second try a bit later always succeeded. So no data corruption, just a bug... The work-around (of moving the lower directory out of my ecryptfs- mounted homedir) is completely acceptable to me, fwiw. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656142 Title: ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 656142] Re: ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load
Hi Jeff, thanks for the report. About your comment #2, are you saying that you're stacking ecryptfs on top of ecryptfs? Also, do you ever actually see corruption of the data written to files? Adding upstream to this bug. Tyler, another potential dupe of Bug #509180, dealing with corruption. This one might be different, though. Not sure. ** Changed in: ecryptfs-utils (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Changed in: ecryptfs-utils (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High ** Also affects: ecryptfs Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: ecryptfs Status: New => Incomplete ** Changed in: ecryptfs Importance: Undecided => High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656142 Title: ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 656142] Re: ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load
Two additional details seem potentially relevant (but probably shouldn't be): 1. The underying encrypted files sit, themselves, on a volume which is mounted via ecryptfs (because they are in my home directory). Said differently, I mount by saying $ options="ecryptfs_cipher=aes,ecryptfs_key_bytes=16,ecryptfs_fnek_sig=abcd,ecryptfs_unlink_sigs" $ sudo mount -t ecryptfs -o $options $HOME/.common $HOME/common where abcd is a real fnek signature. 2. The encrypted files are moved via rsync, although only when the ecryptfs volume is unmounted. Rsync is at version 3.0.7 and is the standard version that comes with debian on my hosts. I saw some old conversations concerning ecryptfs, rsync, and file system attributes, but it would appear those problems are long since solved.
