Thanks Walter for posting this as a bug.
Would just like to link to my askubuntu.com's open question regarding this, as
many Googlers would probably reach that page.

It would be good to get updates there as well.

[Bug 1319233] Re: audio stutters or stops playing after seeking

2015-06-29 Thread jon
Linux Lite 2.4 (based on Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS) with VLC 2.1.16 has the
same problem running pulseaudio. audio/audio track/disable doesn't
rectify. Running from terminal has same problem.

#13 workaround works though. Pause, move to new video section, wait for
picture catch up, then and only then play.

[Bug 815996] Re: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces

2015-11-07 Thread Jon
I've experienced an occasional lock-up when showing Workspaces as well.
However, in my case I can see that applications are still running - for
example I can still type into a terminal. I'm running 14.04 LTS in
VirtualBox 5. I use Hotcorners to trigger the Workspaces view.

I've noticed I can back out of this "crash" by sending Ctrl-Alt-Delete
to the Ubuntu VM, which opens the Log Out dialogue. Requesting a screen
lock from there triggers the animation to zoom to the currently selected
Workspace.

[Bug 1514065] Re: Windows move in workspaces after a window resize event

2015-11-07 Thread Jon
** Description changed:

I run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as a VirtualBox guest (both with VB 4.3.x and

+ (using Host-Right-Ctrl-F) from maximised to not maximised and then back
again, the workspaces behave incorrectly. The same happens also if I
save and restore a VirtualBox session from disk.

  Here is what goes wrong:

  - Maximised windows move between Workspaces
  - When activating the Workspaces viewer, maximised windows cannot be dragged
to the Workspace they should be on
  - Unmaximising and re-maximising a window fixes the problem for that window
only

I have written a script to toggle the maximisation status of all

information, once this report is submitted.

I have installed a brand new Ubuntu guest using the "ubuntu-14.04.2

perhaps the case that the problematic machine was installed using the
"ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso" image (I don't know if that would

unity 7.2.5

Interestingly, I ran apport to get some system information, and I get
this message:

> Your system is providing 3D via software rendering rather than
hardware rendering. This is a compatibility mode which should display
3D graphics properly but the performance may be very poor. If the
problem you're reporting is related to graphics performance, your real
question may be why X didn't use hardware acceleration for your system.

3D acceleration is indeed turned on for this VM, and Workspaces
animation is very snappy, so as far as I've been aware it +has+ been
using hardware acceleration. I don't know if this is relevant, but
adding it anyway.

Let me know if you need any logs.

[Bug 1307093] Re: VirtualBox saved VM resume causes SEGFAULT in i965_dri.so

2015-07-12 Thread Jon
Possible dup bug on VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11938

I believe I have fixed this by updating the BIOS on my Dell XPS 13
ultrabook - machines using 3D acceleration now can be resumed without
crashing, and several machines can be run in parallel. I'll update here
if I experience any problems, but for now this seems to have fixed it
for me.

Thus the problem is not VB but the underlying graphics system?

[Bug 910174] Re: Macbook Air 4.2 no advanced keys on danish keyboard

2016-05-27 Thread Jon
I am new to this so I am sorry if I do It wrong or if i piss somebody off.
2011 thats 5 years to change a keymap. I think many mac users just gave up by
now (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2319868).
This howto has a working .xmodmap for danish keyboards:
http://howto.praqma.net/ubuntu/keyboard
It doesnt change the "keyboard layout chart", but it works allright.

How hard would it be to submit this to upcoming bugfixes. Obviously i
don't know how this works haha.

Unity status is unknown, I only have Ubuntu Gnome installed.

This applies to any action in the menu, "Invert selection" "New Tab" and
any other I tested.

This is causing the whole desktop to hang. I opened the system monitor
to see if it was causing the processor to hang, upon using an item from
the menu, the system monitor's "resources" screen froze for the entire
time of the lag-nearly a minute as I recall). When the desktop was
working again, you could see where the CPU's had been spiking one at a
time to 100% then dropping as the next one spiked for entire history
shown (mine is set at 60 seconds)

[Bug 1565963] Re: gpg secret keys not migrated after upgrade to gnupg 2.1

2016-10-09 Thread Jon
dkg, you are a lifesaver as always. Setting u+x private-keys-v1.d fixed
this for me as well.

In my case, I had to do a laptop restore. I kept my gpg keys on
separate backup media - which I hadn't realized at the time was
formatted as FAT32. I no doubt "fixed" my permissions upon restore
incorrectly.

[Bug 1681523] Re: [Launcher] missing right click options

2017-04-17 Thread Jon
I raised this problem at https://askubuntu.com/q/904680/475088

For a temporary workaround, which at least gives you back the "New
Terminal" context menu item:

File "/usr/share/applications/gnome-terminal.desktop" includes line:

OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity7;

In 16.04 that line was:

OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;

I changed line to remove the "7" (and remove locked icon and re-lock on
Launcher) I now get "New Terminal" again on right-click. However, there
is something odd, because although I can open a new terminal now from
that icon, it launches a single new icon for the new terminal and that
one does not offer "New Terminal".

[Bug 1694129] [NEW] Cannot attach Network Shares in Thunderbird

2017-05-28 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Suddenly (and I'm not sure if this was after a recent Ubuntu update or a
Thunderbird one, Thunderbird no longer shows "Network" locations in the
'Attach File(s)' window. Normally below "Bookmarks" is another section
"Network" which shows my network locations, however this entire section
is now missing.

There is now no way of attaching a file existing anywhere on the network
to an outgoing email. Nautilus can see and access all the network
locations 100% fine. Drag/drop into the outgoing email from Nautilus
will attach a network file to the email but Thunderbird refuses to send
it and throws up a "Send Message Error":

Sending of the message failed.
There was an error attaching smb://mypc/my documents/myfolder/file.xls. Please
check that you have access to the file.

Attaching network files in Thunderbird and on Ubuntu 14.04 has worked
fine for two years. I'm a "user" and really not that au-fait with the
inner workings of Linux so I hope this helps.

Thanks

[Bug 1681523] Re: [Launcher] missing right click options

@sbierman & @md-5
I'm not sure of the relationship between the two files, but in addition to
`/usr/share/applications/gnome-terminal.desktop` you may also need to change
`/usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Terminal.desktop` similarly.

Re: [Bug 1714518] Re: GTK+3 doesn't show FUSE/GVFS, smb (SMB/CIFS), sftp (SFTP/SSH) network shares in file chooser

2018-06-18 Thread Jon
Ah, ok, that explains why it didn't work.. 

Does anyone have any idea when 14.04LTS is going to get a patch? It's been
months with nothing in sight.

I thought installing an LTS meant issues would get some attention. Really
enjoying the Linux experience overall but the lack of urgency in addressing
a bug which is so annoying (used to work fine until one of the official
updates broke the functionality) makes me hesitant to move more computing
onto this platform.

2018-06-15 Thread Jon
Hi Colin

I ran the commands below in terminal. It all seemed to update. Rebooted.
Still no "Network" choices in Thunderbird when I hit "attach" when
composing a mail.

What am I doing wrong please? 14.04LTS

Thanks

John

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:

Re: [Bug 1714518] Re: GTK+3 doesn't show FUSE/GVFS, smb (SMB/CIFS), sftp (SFTP/SSH) network shares in file chooser

2018-02-16 Thread Jon
Ok,

If it was fixed why didn't the updates in 14.04LTS fix it. I've installed
everything offered up and including yesterday's updates.

Once again, I'm a humble *user*. A lot of this is gobbledegook to me. I
simply reported the bug when my network shares disappeared from
Thunderbird.

Can someone please explain in plain English how my 14.04LTS gets this
fix?

Thanks

Still affecting Thunderbird in 14.04LTS.

I'm just a Ubuntu user affected by this (very new to Ubuntu) so I was
waiting for the fix to come via one of the many automatic updates. Do I
have to patch something manually? Any pointers for us newbies would be
very helpful.

Thanks,

Jon

Re: [Bug 1881780] Re: Nautilus requires SMBv1 to work from "Other Locations" without manually typing in the address.

2020-06-30 Thread Jon
Logically this seems to be correct. I’m not a samba developer, so I don’t
have direct insights to what is happening when. I don’t know much about
the samba discovery process.

The easy way to test this is startup FreeNAS in a VM because they disable
SMBv1 by default.

Re: [Bug 1881780] Re: Nautilus requires SMBv1 to work from "Other Locations" without manually typing in the address.

2020-06-30 Thread Jon
No but when you use the automatic detection of smb services which I’m
guessing uses NetBios or something like that it won’t connect if SMBv1 is
disabled.

So simply navigating to Other Locations and clicking on the automatically
enumerated host names, the connection will completely fail if SMBv1 is
disabled. This might be related to samba directly because the same thing
happens in VLC.

The current workaround is to manually specify the URL to connect to the
desired share.

[Bug 1861936] Re: Raspberry Pi 3 network dies shortly after a burst of IPv6 tunnel network load ((lan78xx): transmit queue 0 timed out)

2020-12-31 Thread Jon
I can deterministically reproduce this crash with Wireguard on the RPI3
running 20.10 and hence using the lan78xx driver on eth0. A few minutes
of browsing public web sites on a client connected through Wireguard to
the RPI3 crashes the RPI. Changing nothing except for running
Wireguard's forwarding through wlan0 rather than eth0 does not result in
any crashes. So certainly seems to indicate that the wired ethernet's
lan78xx driver shipping today with 20.10 is the culprit causing these
crashes.

Re: [Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

2023-05-02 Thread Jon
The SMB1 code should be entirely removed from the stack. It’s insecure and
deprecated everywhere.

[Bug 876910] Re: When starting open ssh server without host keys in /etc/ssh/, the keys are not automatically generated.

2011-10-17 Thread Jon
Hello Clint,

sshd is no longer started and/or stopped with /etc/init.d/ssh unless you are
 running inside a chroot.
I'm new to upstart, so forgive my ignorance, but I thought upstart still used
the init scripts to start and/or stop the jobs.

The host keys are typically generated in the postinstall script of
 openssh-server.
I think this may be the issue.

So if you don't have keys, its likely that something went wrong during that
 process.
Well, I suppose this is true, but in this particular case, I intentionally
remove them as a final step to prepare a base image for use with QEMU-KVM. It
is a security concern to have multiple guest VMs all running with the same SSH
key.

Try this to remedy the situation.
 sudo apt-get install openssh-server --reinstall
Two things,

1) Why not:
dpkg-reconfigure openssh-server
As this seems to be a more direct route? Again, maybe I'm not seeing all of
the pieces.

2) In the Development environment both of these solutions will work,
however, this is not scalable and is not a viable solution in a
production environment.

Thanks for your quick response. As is my experience with other non-
upstart distros, SSH automatically creates these host keys if they don't
exist, it is my strong personal belief that Ubuntu should not deviate
from the norm for two reasons, first to remain consistent with 'Linux'
(other distros) , and second so I can present a viable solution to my
management using an Ubuntu platform. Please let me know if you think I'm
way off here, I really do appreciate the assistance.

[Bug 876910] Re: When starting open ssh server without host keys in /etc/ssh/, the keys are not automatically generated.

2011-10-17 Thread Jon
After further testing, determined that my patch did not actually resolve
the issue.

Seems to be an issue with triggering the following sub:

check_rsa_keys () {
#Checks for the existance of RSA keys and generates them if necessary
RSA1_KEY=/etc/ssh/ssh_host_key
RSA_KEY=/etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
DSA_KEY=/etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key

if [ ! -s $RSA_KEY ] || [! -s $RSA1_KEY] || [! -s $DSA_KEY]; then
exec /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure openssh-server
fi
}

Initially, I had added the above if/then statement to my /etc/init.d/ssh
script towards the beginning (starting at line 13 to be exact) before I
created the subroutine and the patch.

Pardon my blonde moment.

That being said, -where- can we add a check for the existence of the
host keys?

[Bug 876910] Re: When starting open ssh server without host keys in /etc/ssh/, the keys are not automatically generated.

2011-10-18 Thread Jon
Hello Clint,

No, upstart jobs are designed to be short and pointed ways to define how
a daemon starts and stops. /etc/init.d is only for backward compatibility
in an upstart system. The ssh init.d script was left the way it is because
of chroot jails for sshd, but it is not necessary for normal operation.

OOO! *Light Bulb*! this makes sense. Thanks for setting me
straight.

Yeah, thats probably better. What was I thinking? ;)
Sometimes it's more fun to do things the hard way. :)

Not sure why this isn't scalable... its not that heavy of a command and
 it should be idempotent.

I can't automate it. If I Can't automate it, can't scale it well.
The problem is, for every new VM, to enable SSH this requires the SysOp to:
-- Log into the Host Machine,
-- Determine the VNC port
-- VNC to the the VM,
-- Run the command.

With enough volume, these four steps could make for a full time job.
It's not the command itself, but the work surrounding the command.

I do think its a bit odd that they are generated at install time rather than
 whenever they are missing,
I'm glad, I thought I was having a derp moment. Also, checking for these files
at startup adds fault tolerance, would you agree?

but either way, its a well defined
behavior and so can be worked with fairly easily by removing and
regenerating the keys at first boot. An upstart job like this
 would probably work:

 start on starting ssh
 task
 exec [ -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key ] || ssh-keygen -t dsa -b 4096 -f
 /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key -q

Is this supposed to be all on one line? Causes ssh to hang when calling:
start ssh

Also, is there a variable that tells Ubuntu if it is first boot? This
could potentially solve the problem since the .qcow2 will overwrite this
variable.

[Bug 669808] Re: Nagios3 checks not scheduled after clocks change from DST

2011-10-31 Thread jon
Another year, another daylight savings change, another failure of our
Nagios system due to a bug that was fixed in the Nagios code a LONG time
ago - yet has STILL not been pushed out through the Ubuntu update
manager for 10.04 LTS.

What is the point of Long Term Support exactly??

[Bug 669808] Re: Nagios3 checks not scheduled after clocks change from DST

2012-10-29 Thread jon
Another daylight savings change has just happened, and once again our
Nagios monitoring system silently failed to run any checks after the
change, needing to be restarted.

Why does nobody out there care that the repositories for an LTS release
of Ubuntu STILL only offer the same buggy version of Nagios (3.2.0) -
They are up to 3.4.1 now and the bug was fixed a LONG time ago!!

Clearly LTS means absolutely NOTHING whatsoever.

[Bug 669808] Re: Nagios3 checks not scheduled after clocks change from DST

2011-03-22 Thread jon
We have been using Nagios3 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for the past 6 months or
so and ran into this issue shortly afterwards in November 2010 (our last
daylight savings change). Nagios had stopped scheduling any more checks
and so was not doing anything, but this was not immediately obvious.

Found the nagios 3.2.0 daylight savings bug described here, in an article dated
Oct 2009 (!)
http://www.chown-r.co.uk/2009/10/nagios-schedule-checks-do-not-run-after-daylight-savings-change/

We worked around it as they suggested (set
use_retained_scheduling_info=0 and performed nagios restart):

However as Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is still not distributing any version newer
than 3.2.0 we are still exposed to this bug and are about to be hit by
it again as another daylight savings change is about to happen.

Can an updated version of nagios3 *please* be distributed.

[Bug 652065] [NEW] dhclient hook assumes wrong service name (samba instead of smbd)

2010-09-30 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

The samba dhclient hook script located at
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/samba tries to reload the samba
configuration by calling:
 [ -x /etc/init.d/samba ] /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d samba reload

That doesn't work in Lucid because the samba service has been renamed to
smbd.

Also, instead of calling /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d the appropriate upstart
command should be used.

[Bug 60686] knot3 oops when booting on powerpc64

2006-09-16 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

I just downloaded knot3 to test on my PowerMac G5, but the kernel oopses
right after I select live-nosplash-powerpc64. After a long period of
time, the CD-ROM spins up and then an additional few lines of output are
printed, then nothing.

I tried selecting live-powerpc64 first, but my monitor couldn't handle
the bootsplash (19 LCD, ViewSonic VP191b) and I couldn't see anything.
After a long while, I gave up and re-tried with nosplash. I also tried
the check option, but it seems to use bootsplash as well (and thus I
had the same problem).

[Bug 57390] Framebuffer does not work on macbook pro

2006-08-22 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-686

I cant seem to get a framebuffer to work during boot on my macbook pro.
This means I cant use upower or splashy when booting.

When i set vga=795 the screen basically goes blank until gdm starts. I
am using the 15 version - i have to use lilo not grub to boot because
grub is not supported on my machine.

Just found a patch that should get this working:

I know about apt-get dist-upgrade, but I didn't know where to get daily

am installing from it now - booting the install-powerpc64 target
worked without a hitch.

[Bug 66420] Cannot get to console in edgy on a macbook pro

2006-10-16 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

I cannot switch to any of the other consoles in edgy (1-6), although I
could do this on dapper. If i press ctrl, alt, F1for example, it will
just take me to a broken screen made up of green and black colours, its
hard to describe but there is nothing legible on the screen. Perhaps
this is due to some update to the framebufer. I can pres ctrl, alt F7 to
return to the GUI fine.

The problem with this is that is anything breaks, such as graphics
drivers, I have no easy way to get to the command line to rescue the
system

I am using the 15.4 version with the 2.16 duo processor.

[Bug 62131] (edgy) bubbly column headers for message list

2006-09-24 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

The appearance of the column headers for the message list in the e-mail
component of Evolution doesn't match the appearance of the column
headers elsewhere in the application (e.g., preferences) and other Gnome

[Bug 62131] Re: (edgy) bubbly column headers for message list

2006-09-24 Thread Jon
Thanks for forwarding the bug.

The ability to drag and drop the columns to rearrange them is of course
not an issue, since it's an added feature above and beyond regular
column headers. But previous releases of Evolution have had the same
capability, while looking just like regular column headers, which is why
I feel that it's a regression - granted, a very minor one.

Upstream, the change may have been made intentionally, to make the drag
and drop feature more discoverable (I don't follow Evolution development
very closely). But if it was not intentional, I think it would be
beneficial to have the column headers look like regular column headers.

[Bug 291881] [NEW] Search folders have the wrong Unread count

2008-10-31 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have a folder with 13 unread messages in it, plus some additional
messages marked important. I created a search folder for this folder
where the criteria is [Status is not Read] or [Status is Important].
The search folder contains all 13 unread messages (I counted them) plus
the read messages that are marked important, but the unread count for
the search folder is 9 - it displays (9) next to the name of the search
folder, and if I select the search folder, at the top it says 9 unread,
51 total.

The problem occurs with both an IMAP account and a local Maildir
account. Right-clicking on the search folder and selecting Refresh
doesn't fix it. Restarting evolution doesn't fix it, either. Deleting
and re-creating the search folder fixes the problem, but the unread
count gets out of sync again after a while. I've also tried deleting
the account from evolution and re-adding it, but the problem comes back
after a while. I'm running evolution Version: 2.24.1-0ubuntu2 (the one
that comes with Ubuntu 8.10). I've never encountered this issue in the
version of evolution in Ubuntu 8.04. Can anyone else reproduce this?

[Bug 290572] [NEW] NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out, eth0: tx_timeout: dead entries!

2008-10-29 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu Server on a machine with two network cards acting as
a file server and gateway; eth0 is the external (Internet-facing)

Google led me to this unanswered e-mail that looks like the same
  problem: http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-

Software is Ubuntu 8.04.1; linux-image 2.6.24-16-server. Hardware is
AMD Opteron 1218 HE / Tyan S2925G2NR. syslog, dmesg and lspci -vv
- output are attached.
+ output are attached. Note that I installed some updates and rebooted
+ the machine before filing this bug, so the output from dmesg and lspci
+ are from a slightly newer kernel (2.6.24-19).

[Bug 206991] [NEW] File operations dialog doesn't remember its position

2008-03-26 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If you have a long file transfer going, and you move the File operations
dialog to a corner of your screen, any of the following events will
cause the File operations dialog repositions itself to the center of the
screen:

 * you start another transfer
 * you cancel one of the transfers
 * one of the transfers finishes
 * you click the File operations icon in the notification area twice (once to
hide the dialog, then again to re-show it)

The file operations dialog should stay where I put it. Otherwise, it
appears to be a different dialog.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 beta + all updates as of March 25, 2008. dpkg
-s nautilus | grep Version shows Version: 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu3.

[Bug 206994] [NEW] Tooltips in Hardy Heron lack padding

2008-03-26 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

In Gutsy and before, tooltips had a bit of space between the border and
the text. In Hardy beta, most of the tooltips have no space between the
border and the text, which I feel is a regression. I say most
tooltips because some tooltips, like the tooltip for the Show Desktop
button and tooltips in Firefox have padding.

See the attached screenshots for examples.
