I have 2 questions related to charts.
Say I have 2 columns: date and value

Q1. I want the x-axis to increment by month.

Q2. I want to only display the x-axis labels for the data points I have.

I don't this problem is particularly well defined. You mean the first of
January and the third of March - right? - not January 2001 (or 1901?) and
March 2003? Do you want your January and March values to be located for
their month generally (as if for the Ides of March, maybe) or for their
actual dates? You say you will have some months missing, but what happens if
you have two entries for one month?

I figured out Q1, I just wanted the x-axis to increment by 1 month.
The option wasn't there before but I recompiled LO and now resolution is there.
The only change I made was Resolution and LO thinks the document has not
changed and won't let me save it.l

Q2 is in regards to the bubble help you see when you hover the mouse over a
point on the graph.
It shows Jan 2001 instead of Jan 21 2001.
I have no idea how I changed that.

I apologize for the double post, I wasn't subscribed so I subscribed and
reposted.
I didn't think the first one would post.

[libreoffice-users] trouble with Page Styles and Fields in Writer

looked at your file.

Try the following.

Format Page Footer
check the Footer On box

Then go to the first page footer with the footer page count.

Insert Field
There you have Page-Number and Page-Count options.

That should help you.

It's not that I can't make a footer.
I have the text
page Field-Page-Number of Field-Page-Count
and it displays:

I want it to display 'page 2 of 2.

There are 3 physical pages but I set the starting page# to 1 on the
FirstPage so I expect Page-Count to start from there.

There is no way it should even have Page-Count=4.

I can explain this bit, which LibreOffice will not see as a bug.
Writer considers that you may wish to print your document
double-sided. You have set your second page (first page) to be
numbered 1, an odd number, and Writer decides that you will
therefore want this to be a recto (or right-hand page), not the verso
(or left-hand page) that it would otherwise be. To achieve this, it
notionally inserts a blank page between cover page and first
page. Including this blank page, you do indeed now have four pages,
not three.

Is there any way to just have pages that are not right or left pages?

In editing mode, you do not see the blank page, and this may be confusing.
It is confusing because it's wrong behaviour, if it forces people to
print it, then it should be visible in editing mode.

But you can see it in Page Preview. You will want the page to print
(as it were) if you are printing double-sided but not if you are
printing single-sided. You can control this at Tools | Options... |
LibreOffice Writer | Print | Other | Print automatically inserted
blank pages. Alternatively you can reach the same dialogue on the fly
via the Options... button in the Print dialogue.

Oh, and I'm not advocating this arrangement, merely describing it.

Thanks.
Why do the developers assume something is always going to be printed or
put on the web?

Maybe there should be a View-PDF Layout.

[libreoffice-users] help making text fill a page

2011-09-10 Thread James

I've been struggling with getting it to fill a page.
Maybe someone else can look at it and figure out how to make page 2
start on page 1 (First Page).
Physically I want 'Cover' page style (as page 1), 'First Page' style (as
page 2), 'Default' page style (as pages 3+).

Logically I want page 1, page 1, pages 2+.

You have the Keep with next paragraph option set on much of the
material on your third page, and the only way this material can be
kept together is if it is moved to that new page.

o Select the first three rows on the third page.
o Go to Format | Paragraph... | Text Flow | Options (or right-click |
Paragraph... | Text Flow | Options) and remove the tick from Keep
with next paragraph.

o Select the next table and repeat.
o Once more and you're done!

You may be able to achieve what you want making fewer changes, but
that's probably not important.

I trust this helps.

This was exactly the help I needed.

2. Enter

on the to line:
3. Select all the to: and copy it to the clipboard
4. Create an empty spreadsheet
5. Past the clipboard in a cell

It should work.

Now try (quotes around the name):
libreoffice-users Mailing List users@global.libreoffice.org
It only pastes what is inside the quotes.
Even past-special doesn't work.

Past into the expression bar, it works.

Ok, say the numbers are written along the top row such that

A1 = 646.15
A2 = 556.85

then

A4 = A2/A1

Click on A4 and go up to the menus at the top to choose

Format - Cell - Number
in the first box Category select Percentage

I think it's better to avoid keying in the currency symbol and just format those cells as
Currency instead of as Percentages. That way you still get the currency
symbol anyway but don't have to type it in. It also avoids confusions. Note that i left a gap

Thanks for the solution.

[libreoffice-users] equal width columns

2011-10-03 Thread James
I want the columns to each be the same width (the width of the selected
columns divided by the number of selected columns).

I found this:

  Space Columns Equally

Adjusts the width of the selected columns to match the width of the
widest column in the selection. The total width of the table cannot
exceed the width of the page

but it is not what I want.

I can merge all the cells into one column and then split the one column
into equal parts or I can manually set the column widths but each of
those methods has drawbacks.

 Hello!
If you're using KDE, you've got to change comments background color in KDE
(applications?) system settings; I'm at the moment on Gnome, and I'm quite
new to KDE, so I don't remember exactly; if you don't solve let me know and
I'll give you more clear suggestions, after looking at KDE on another PC.
 Namastè! cico :)

That helped but I think I found a bug.
I changed 'KDE:System Settings/Application Appearance/Colors/Colors tab/Tooltip
Background' to brown and it worked but the tooltip text is black.
I changed 'System Settings/Application Appearance/Colors/Colors tab/Tooltip

It is a function and not an operator. Use

If so, shouldn't Calc put ' in front of them?

I use KDE.
I created a new text file and named it usage.ods.
I then tried to open it and LibreOffice crashed.
I sometimes create new documents this way.
If I rename the file usage.txt and open it with Calc, it imports fine.
If I rename it as usage.ods and open it with Calc, it crashes.

Does this happen for anyone else?

The only way I could get the text sample you provided to be accepted

The DATEVALUE() function will convert the string Jan 2, 2020 to a

My suggestion would be to input the substring Jan 2, 2020 into the
DATEVALUE function then format as desired to get your dates back.

e.g. =DATEVALUE(MID(A1,6,20))

That works, thanks.

I have a spreadsheet with 2018 dates and I did a replace of '2018' for
'2019' to make a copy of the spreadsheet for 2019.

When I did the replace for 2020 dates it changed the cells to text.
I maybe had an option checked that I didn't before. :-(

[libreoffice-users] template to set default font and font size problems with 6.4.3.2

2020-05-09 Thread James

I have 3 problems:

1. I made a template to set the default font for new Calc documents.
Is there a way to set the default font for existing documents instead of
selecting them all and increasing the size?

2. A new Calc document defaults to the new size I saved in a template
but the rows are not the optimum size for the default font.

Should the rows default to the optimum height for the default font?

3. Menus are a decent size since I changed the system font but sheet tab
names at the bottom are still tiny.

2020-05-07 Thread James

On 2020-05-07 6:04 p.m., Remy Gauthier wrote:

Hi,
If your values takes up, for instance the range A2 to A29, you can
enter this formula as an array formula:
=SUM(VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(A2:A29," KB","")," MB","")))
The only trick is to hit CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER instead of just ENTER at the
end of the formula entry: if you only use ENTER, this will be a
"normal" formula and it will not work. To make sure you did it right,
the formula should appear with curly braces on each side in the formula
display, like this:
{=SUM(VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(A2:A29," KB","")," MB","")))}
Another thing toi be careful about: if your decimal separator is the
comma (","), the dot in your list of numbers will also have to be
changed. You can change the formula like this to make the change of
separator:
=SUM(VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(A2:A29," KB",""),"
MB",""),".",",")))
Now, if you really want to be fancy, you can use the REGEX function to
remove the units. This will remove KB, MB, and GB:
=SUM(VALUE(REGEX(A2:A29," [KMG]B","")))
And don't forget that CTRL-SHIFT !
I hope this helps.
Rémy.

This looks promising. :-)

Have you, perhaps inadvertently, assigned the same key combo to close

In any case, you can check out and modify the key assignments here :

I have nothing set beside ctrl+M.
I set it to "Clear".
It doesn't say "Clear Formatting" and there are two entries named Clear".
I think it doesn't like my video card because the UI all seems small.

For instance let's say the third dimensions use greek characters. Then by
default you see the "α" 2D spreadsheet showing the numbers and letters grid

You hold Alt and scroll once and it changes to "β" 2D spreadsheet. And so

Also it would require a way to select the X and Y axis in order to visualize

This could be really powerful. What do you think?

The resulting value in the cell will be 27.

The first parameter is the starting date.  Middle parameter is the
current date in question (I used Jan 27th in my example).  The third
parameter is the interval Calc should use, which is days here, hence
"d".  Note that if you use 2020-01-01 as the start date, then the 27th
day of January would actually only be the 26th day since Jan 1st, so
you need to use a starting date of the last day of the prior year.

Hope this helps!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Can't insert citation (Zotero)

2023-09-28 Thread James

Sep 28, 2023 1:42:11 AM John Jason Jordan :

I have recently installed SparkyLinux, based on Debian Stable, and it
came with LibreOffice 7.4.7.2 installed without choice in the default.
The default, however, did not install Zotero, which I absolutely must
have. The distribution's repositories have Zotero 6.0.27, so I
installed it, and later I replaced it with Beta 7.0.0.42. When I launch
Writer I find the Zotero toolbar in View > Toolbars, and it looks
normal, but when I click on it to enter a citation nothing happens; no
error messages, nada. There is also a button for Add/Edit Bibliography,
but it also does nothing.

The installation added a launch entry for Zotero, which brought up my
hundreds of documents, so I guess I haven't lost anything yet. But it
would be really nice if I could use it.

The only literature I can find says that installing Zotero
automatically links it to installed word processors. In my case I must
characterize that as wishful thinking.

Some have said that you must have Java installed. OpenJDK came with
the operating system, and LO finds it, with the 'Use' button checked in
the Advanced window. However, below that is a little place which is
supposed to list the provider of the Java, and it is blank.
Furthermore,

if I un-check the 'Use' button, a few minutes later it becomes checked
again, all by itself. Weirdness abounds.

I have Zotero.oxt from a previous LO, so I added it in Tools >
Extensions, but it didn't make any difference. And 'Add Extensions'
produced an Unofficial Zotero add-in, which I also installed, also
without accomplishing anything. The Add Extensions option also offered
the official extension from Zotero, but it doesn't actually download an
.oxt file. I'm not sure what it did, but whatever it did resulted in no
change.

I need my Zotero! Can anyone offer suggestions?

To format cells (or columns/rows), cell styles should be used.
How to do that you can find here:

Maybe LO can be smart and create a style when appropriate.

It's a great idea for a feature.

I don't know how hard it would be to add a checkbox beside column type

You can record a macro and see if that works but it is probably easier

have AM/PM. If it doesn't, just change the time format to what you need at
this point.

The "a.m." or "p.m." portion of your original text will be moved one column
over. It will overwrite what is in the next column if the column is not
empty.

To prevent adjacent columns from being overwritten, while still in the
"Text to Columns" dialog box, go to the "Fields" section at the bottom.

There should be two columns with a heading of "Standard", one column
showing the time portion of your text, the other column showing the a.m/p.m
portion. Click the word "Standard" over the a.m/p.m column.

Now open the "Column type" list and pick the "Hide" option.

Finally, click OK to close the dialog box.

You text time will now be a time number in the column it was already in.
The a.m/p.m portion has not overwritten the adjacent column as it has been
discarded as part of the Text to Columns operation.

I have text fields like:

10:06:59 a.m.
8:57:36 p.m.

How do I convert them to 24-hour time fields?

It depends how you want the sheet to function. If you use Edit>Find
and Replace... find a.m. replace with AM, find p.m. replace with PM it
automatically converts.
