Some vendors have released laptops with pre-installed linux, but using drivers that don't immediately appear in linux distributions. Models intended for use in large organizations generally don't change hardware specs as quickly as consumer products, but when I tried to purchase a name-brand laptop identical to those used by one large organization I was told they are only sold in large batches with Windows Enterprise images specified by the organization. "Refurbished" models 3 or 4 years old have had time time for linux experience to solidify and any general design issues to be found. -- George N. Much thanks to everyone for their replies. One issue that I'm having with my 2013 Dell XPS L322x is heat. And I wonder if it is tied to what you describe for the 9380 (original drive was 128GB, adequate for the heat sink; subsequent 1TB drive gives off more heat than the machine can dissipate). That's the state of my primary Fedora laptop (I installed 1TB harddrive circa 2018). I've purchased a laptop cooling pad, and that seems to help. All that said, is there a recent Dell XPS variant that the Fedora community would recommend? Much thanks, Max -- George N. I have a 9360 (2017-ish I think). I have replaced the battery and the Wi-Fi card (replaced original card with an Intel after the original started acting up). I have not replaced the SSD, but should be easier to do than replacing the Wi-Fi card. ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue
Re: Dell XPS 13 recommendations (used/refurbished)
Max, I have a Dell XPS 13 from 2013 and a Dell XPS 13 from 2018. Both bought new then. They work fine, and I have been very pleased with them. (In fact, there is a small group of graduate students who bought similar models around that time based on my experience.) These machines install my remix of Fedora efficiently (which means that they would likely have no problems with the Fedora official environments), and are part of my stable of workhorses. I largely use the earlier 1980x1080 Dell for teaching and presentation, in connection with HDMI projection, and the newer one is the 3840x2160 resolution machine I do all sorts of tasks on, including hour-long computations, and typing this email. I have had no problems with wifi/network, however i had to change the battery for both of them last year (the older Dell that is not part of your consideration, needed an after-market battery because Dell no longer made that part). HTH! As you can see, fairly positive recommendations here, but happy to answer questions as needed. Dell XPS 13 recommendations (used/refurbished)
Greetings, I've been using two Dell XPS L322X of early 2013 vintage acquired used since late 2017. They work very well, but I'm considering newer versions of this laptop. Specifically, I've seen some Dell XPS 13 9380s of 2019 vintage. There is some installation help at this webpage: https://raynix.info/archives/4232 With the L322X I was able to do some maintenance on my own, specifically replacing the SSD from a 125MB to a 1TB and then installing Fedora via USB. And also installing a new batter and wifi network cards. I would hope to do the same with a 9380 (or whatever else might be recommended). Any opinions pro/con? Much thanks as always.
