It doesn' t necessarily mean the OO code had malware, just that it was an
unsigned executable. Windows 11 now also prevents unsigned apps from
running, by default, showing a "blue shileld" screen.
This happens to totally legit and safe apps, like Coolterm
https://freeware.the-meiers.org/

On Win11, you disable it using the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).

On Mac, the procedure is outlined here

Some of us like CUA menus.
A properly designed user interface that can be navigated with mouse clicks
or (for me, most of the time) keyboard shortcuts.

EG alt-f then using the cursor Keys.

If the UI is revamped, that is the day K will stop using AOL.

Yeah, newer interfaces might look flasher, but are they actually more
useful? Can you navigate them with hotkeys and the cursor keys (arrows)?

I would like to hear any usability arguments...

HI Gemma,

You forgot to say which operating system he uses. Windows, Linux, Mac?

The answer depends on the operating system.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide plenty of accessibility features, eg

After several years on this list and seeing people "lose" documents by
not following backup copy strategies I think it´d be worth to make
AOO:

1. Automatically save in a Backup Folder dated revisions of every file, eg in

C:\USERS\$USER\DOCUMENTS\
create a folder
C:\USERS\$USER\DOCUMENTS\AOO_TIME_MACHINE

Inside, every document ever opened and edited, would be automagically
saved there every 10 minutes as
¨"C:\USERS\$USER\DOCUMENTS\AOO_TIME_MACHINE\MyDocumentName-backup-MM-DD-YY-HH-MM.ODT"

Machines come with several-gigabyte SSDs with 1TB no longer being the
oddity it once was... so it´s unlikely we´re going to fill up the
users HDD or SSD with 2MB files.

"The maximum file size for Microsoft Word documents that only contain
text is 32 MB. This is true for documents created in Microsoft Word
2007 "

result is this:

*How do I stop OpenOffice.org from changing the first letter of a word to
uppercase?*

   1. Select Tools > AutoCorrect Options and then the Options tab.
   2. Near the top of the list, uncheck the [T] box next to "Capitalize
   first letter of every sentence".
   3. Click OK at the bottom of the dialog to apply the change.

I know. I just brought this issue in case the extension author is a list
member. Or someone on the AOO Users list knows who he/she is.

I know what pdf is intended for and that one shouldnt use it for editable
material, only for final destination format. But in some situations, there
is no other option.

It is always
> preferable to edit material at an earlier stage and in a more appropriate

That's something I cannot do as the PDF file is generated on a web server
that I cannot control (the local postal service)

This issue is a typo on the street name and 'null' text shown on apt# and
floor#, it has been going on for ages (2019) and no matter how many support
tickets I open, the issue remains.

So I manually edit the generated PDF files (until now with Abby converter,
which is licensed on a separate desktop PC) and then print the shipping
labels. It's just switching a few characters and it doesn't affect the
label's bar code or QR code.

My intent was doing that editing directly with AOO on my laptop and not
having to power up the desktop with Abby PDF Converter just to do such a
minor edit.

This is technically correct, but a bit on the nitpicking side. I selected
the OpenOffice writer icon which launches AOO with AOO writer with a blank
document.

How a document file is opened depends on a
> combination of the extension to the file name and the actual contents
> of the file.
>

Well it turns out that in order to use the above mentioned extension, one
has to select edit->insert->File and select the PDF to edit. Then a Writer
document is created with the pdf content inside.

However the AOO PDF edit extension creates a mess with text overlying the
bar code and text boxes over the QR code.

So in short the pdf parsing when creating a AOO Draw document is better
than the extensions' conversion to hybrid odf/pdf editable file.

AOO PDF Import

2021-02-10 Thread Fernando Cassia
Hi Users,

I have downloaded and installed the AOO PDF import extension v0.1.0 from
the extensions web site.

I have successfully opened a pdf file and it looks good, allows me to edit
a typo generated by the back end server that generates pdf files.

However I'm not sure if I'm using it right. I just opened AOO writer and
file->open, selected the pdf file.

After a while the pdf comes up, but as a AOO Draw document.

The blurb on the extension reads "best results with 100% layout accuracy
can be achieved with the 'PDF/ODF Hybrid file format' which this extension
also enables"

That leads me to believe I doing something wrong, as currently it won't let
me save the pdf file I opened for editing in this hybrid format at all,
just aoo draw.

I need 100% layout accuracy as this is a shipping label with bar code.

Btw: clicking on aoo-pdf-import (the extension name) on the AOO extension
manager tries to load a code.google.com url that gives a http
error message.

I guess the extension also needs to be updated and the url corrected.

TIA

Sorry to answer myself. I found the last version seemed to be version 3.2
A copy is available online at German magazine chip.de at this URL:

Scroll down to "manuelle installation" below the large blue download

following page after clicking on "manuelle installation" click on the
large blue button "Download server ChipOnline"

You will get this file: odp-3.2-bin-windows-en-US.exe
File size: 98.621.012
SHA1SUM: a83f6ac435a6d3bd1d74a02a4bc2c088842f4b5f

Direct-download URL was:

(might or might not work if used directly)

Hope this helps someone. I will install and test it later. The
question remains if this was ever open sourced or anyone at ORCL
reading this thinks they might help achieve that.

Status of the former Sun Microsystems "Opendocument filters for Microsoft Office"?

2021-01-11 Thread Fernando Cassia
Hi users,

Recently I had a nightmarish experience with trying to edit long
tables on a document originally created with Microsoft Office (the
last version before the Office365 move, I believe it was Office 2003).
It had tables pasted inside of tables... something which was a
nightmare to edit and move properly in AOO.

To make a long story short: I ended up deleting the tables and redoing
those by hand from scratch It worked well.

The issue still remains that I end up editing stuff created on
Microsoft Office by users whom, per company policy, must use the
installed copy of Microsoft Office and do not have administrative
rights to install other software.

I can edit those documents fine with AOO 4.1.8, save as ODT, and then
when I have a final copy, e-mail back the document saving it in .DOC
(Word97,Word2000, WordXP, or words to that effect).

In my last exchange with this office, I emailed .DOC documents that
looked perfectly on my AOO 4.1.8 (and which started as DOC documents
emailed to me), only to be told that the returned document "missed all
the margins" and had to be re-edited by them on MS Office.

So, I would very much prefer emailing ODT to them for them to open in
Microsoft Office, and then re-save by themselves in DOCx format on
their system...

Sun Microsystems used to offer a set of installable Opendocument
Filters for Microsoft Office. The download page was at:

http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/get.jsp

On Web Archive the last version seems to be v3.0 archived at
https://web.archive.org/web/20090226123328/http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/get.jsp

But since the binaries weren´t direcly linked there is no way to
download the installer from archive.org.

Would anyone on this list be so kind as to provide me with filename of
the installer and sha1sum so I can try to find them on other sites and
know the installer is "safe" to install and use?

And anyone happens to know the legal status of those filters, were
them ever open sourced by Sun? Could they be open sourced by Oracle
now?

Please do not reply "use the AOO fork". Such replies will be ignored. ;)

Thanks in advance.

Aren't you confusing trademarks with copyright?

The is IMHO no copyright infringement unless we are talking about the same

Trademarks, maybe, if someone registered "Base" but it's such a generic

You setup your printer with your operating system.
You can however set print settings by going to the File menu, (Alt-F
if your software is in English language) then selecting "Printer
Settings". [1]

On that dialog box, there's two buttons, one labelled "Settings" and
another "options". [2]
On settings you select general options about what you want printed
(images yes or no, etc). [3]
And in Options the options for the selected printer (paper size, A4,
letter, etc, and which tray to use). [4]

Perhaps someone else can comment on the envelope issue, as I rarely
print envelopes...

the same across versions (Windows and Linux at least).

Steve,
Notice Heidi said "from online". That means she isn't opening local
documents but clicking on web page links that make the server send a
MSOffice type file.
Thus, what she is really asking is how to modify the browser helper to
handle MSOffice file downloads.

That, of course, has different answers depending on what operating
system and web browser she is using.

Eliana,

You need to tell us more about your setup. Do you use Windows, Mac, Linux?
What kind of system is this? and what type of document are you working
on, Text document, spreadsheet, presentation?.

What happens when you type text and read the end of the line, the
document should automatically scroll to a new line.

You should also be able to use cursor up/down keys to navigate up and
down the document, likewise with the page-Up and page-Down keys on
your keyboard.

That's why I asked what kind of system do you have, you might as well
be using an Intel based tablet with Windows (such tablets do exist,
althought not as widespread as iPads or Android tablets).

Once you provide more details, someone will be able to help you.

Nina,

I don't know what "all documents" means (text documents only?
spreadsheets too? presentations?).

I would advise against attempting to edit large documents or
spreadsheets on a phone which has a much smaller screen than a tablet.

However, on any Android based tablet with a 7" or larer screen, a
third party port of AOO exists for Android. I have used it succesfully
for months...

Install it from the Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andropenoffice=en

It gives you the full functionality and user interface as the desktop version.

Hope this helps.

That's how you learn to SAVE OFTEN.

Browsers can crash, too. It happened to me many times until I how

Power glitches can also make your PC reboot in the middle of your

Gene,

Welcome to this mailing list. A mailing list is an e-mail based
discussion group, for the community of users to exchange questions and
answers. Last time I checked, there's no phone support for AOO.

If you could write that e-mail asking for help, you surely can
continue reading and writing more emails to tell us about your
problems with AOO so that someone can help you with your problem.

Why insist on a phone call? it's usually much slower, as the person on
the other side has to first figure out what operating system you use
(PC running Windows? what windows? PC running Linux? Apple ?). It's
much easier if you could begin by providing that information over
email to the list.

Best regards

What is the oldest Linux that AOO can run on? Is there a policy wrt baseline libraries/distro release?

2017-01-13 Thread Fernando Cassia
I wonder what are the older Linux version that AOO-current (whatever
is the latest version) will run on?

I'm not concerned too much about kernel but glibc which is a common
cause of hassles.
And I'm trying to create a VM with the oldest possible, still
supported Linux version, with AOO on it.

CentOS 5.5 is still a target platform?

And going forward, what do you plan to use as a base? is there a
policy? like "the oldest version of CentOS still supported"? or
"latest CentOS -1" or what?

Or are the AOO Linux binaries just expected to work on any Linux
regardless of glibc version?

Thanks,

are hard to port. And the 1.43 gigabyte figure of TEXT FILES expanded to

*sarcasm* *sarcasm*.

Of course, a straight port to Java would be difficult. But IMHO that'd not
be the right way to approach it.
The right way to approach big problems is to divide them into little
problems that are easier to solve.

What does an Office suite do? Open office files and display them. Then
allow users to edit them, and save them. (also, print them). ;)

So what is the most easily postable part of a big office suite? I/O of
course. Loading documents into memory and saving them. That requires no UI.
That (ODF input/output libraries) would be IMHO the first target to attempt
to isolate and port. Then once that is achieved it could be attempted to
create a Java based AOO Document VIEWER (that just displays a document not
edit it). And finally the biggest hurdle would be to replicate (if porting
is not possible) as much as possible the AOO GUI / behaviour using Netbeans
Platform components / widgets.

But of course it'd d take slow, small incremental steps until reaching the
desired goal.

First you claimed the lack of accesibility APIs as an argument against the

So, following your logic, AOO should stay C++. But then you claim in the

Apache Open Office uses whatever fonts you have installed on your system.
Once you have a new font installed on your system, AOO will show it,
and you will be able to use it in your documents.

This web site has 44 Old English fonts available for free download
http://www.1001fonts.com/old-english-fonts.html

I have downloaded e.g. Canterbury fonts from the above page, extracted
the .ttf to the fonts folder on my system (since I use LinuxMint, a
variant of Ubuntu Linux, I used as destination the fonts folder
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/openoffice - but if you use Windows it's
usually c:\windows\fonts, on Mac, check your OS documentation, I can't
help you with fruity OS), and lo and behold, I could use it on my AOO
text documents, just by selecting the font name from the drop-down
menu.

Here is a screenshot:

Hello Yvonne.

While it's nice that you are here and willing to interact with the
Apache Open Office users community as a learning exercise, it's not so
nice to ask for others just to reply to your assignment questions ;).

In other words, you should be able to figure differences by yourself
just by reading the Wikipedia entry for each program (eg: Wordperfect,
Apache Open Office Writer, and Microsoft Word). And even better, if
you took the time to install each program and test it on your own.

I will give you some clues, which will surely help you get started:

1. Apache Open Office is available in a version for the Linux
operating system in addition to Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.
Microsoft Word does not have a Linux version.
2. Cost: Microsoft Word is not free, Apache Open Office is...
3. Think about the source code, and if modifications to the program
are alllowed on each word processor.

Oh, gotcha, I almost filled all 3. ;-)

Of course, if you start using each you will also notice other
differences with regards to the user interface.

Good luck.

Bill,

When Stardivision Gmbh, a German software firm headed by Marco
Boerries started making its StarOffice suite available across
different PC and Mac platforms, they quickly realized they needed to
support several operating systems at once with little reprogramming
and visual differences (for the user). So they ended up creating a set
of graphical components for "StarOffice" that looked the same and
worked across the several supported operating systems (back then,
Windows, Unix, OS/2, etc). They called that "framework as "StarView"
(1)

Then came Sun Microsystems which bought Stardivision and created Sun
StarOffice and OpenOffice.org opening up the source code. It included
further cross-platform abilities like separation of the different apps
that make the "offic suite" into components (2).

Then Oracle bought Sun and then after a revolt by a group of external
programmers, Oracle decided to hand over OpenOffice.org to the Apache
Software Foundation.

All the above is to say: the cross-platform fundamentals remain the
same on today's AOO. It has and continues to look and behave the same
no matter what OS you use. There is little if any retraining to be
done when moving across AOO running on different operating systems.

The programs should work and behave the same no matter what the
underlying operating system youu are using.

Questions:

1. Do you have a cat? kids?
2. Could it be possible that you left the computer unattended and
someone or something could have just pressed keys on the keyboard
randomly until selecting all text and erasing it?

In short: it's never a good practice to have all your data on a SINGLE
document. It's better to have new files saved with every revision. If
it's a daily edit, use the "Save As" function regularly to save the
file with a new name, e.g. "seans-journal-jun16.odt" and the next day
"seans-journal-jun17.odt" and so on. That way in the event you lose
one version you don't lose ALL text just the data you added in the
last day.

This would be a good practice, going forward...
I'm sure you will learn this valuable lesson on data redundancy in the
case you end up finding all your typed data is indeed lost forever.

FC
PS: also, regularly making copies of your documents to an external
media (flash card) or to the cloud (Google drive, Microsoft's Skydrive
(now renamed OneDrive), Dropbox, etc) is a good idea to protect
yourself from hard drive / SDD hardware failure.

surely a handful of individuals on this list with an axe to grind
against Java will vote against it.

In fact, it makes so much sense now as it did 6 years ago. it was
Oracle's idea to rewrite OpenOffice.org into JavaFX, before the
"Freedom Fighters" who opposed the dual-licensing scheme of
OpenOffice.org (which allowed for the derivative StarOffice w
propietary add-ons), made their move and led Oracle to hand over OO.o
to the Apache foundation and lay off all its paid developers.

Oracle sees future of JavaFX with OpenOffice
http://www.fhshh.com/oracle-sees-the-future-of-javafx-with-openoffice.html

"At the JavaOne conference, Larry Ellison has sent a message to the
developers of the open source project, encouraging them to quickly
build libraries for JavaFX. This development language, introduced as a
competitor to Adobe AIR and FLex, and Silverlight (Microsoft) in the
design of rich Internet applications (RIAs)".

Unlike the situation at that time, now JavaFX can be made to work
inside browsers without plug-in via solutions like GluonHQ
https://mobile.twitter.com/JavaFX_Hulk/status/737541368067690497

...So, Oracle's idea -had it succeeded and not being stabbed in the
back by the LO Fork- would have meant that today there would be OO.o
and/or StarOffice on every mobile phone and tablet...

Windows always maintains backwards compatibility.

Even apps compiled for Windows NT 4 released 20 years ago work
seamlessly on today's windows 10.

Unless we're talking low-level software that install drivers, which
isnt the case for an office suite.

I dont see anything different in the way this mailing list works
compared with others.

No one can help users who cannot READ the automatic notification they
get after requesting to unsubscribe. Without this
verification/clicking step, anybody could unsubscribe anybody else
from the list. That's the way mailing lists work.

To me the problem seems to be people who join a mailing list without
knowing what a mailing list is or how it works. Tha's why I suggested
we make it clear on the subcription page that a mailing list involves,
gee, receiving questions and answers from lots of stranges, to your

Are we considering the slight chance that this might be a case of a
customer running RollAp service on some kind of tablet and it's that this
service which is billed?.

I don't know if RollApp changed the "about box" in any way, so customer
"sees" the "Open office" running on his/her "tablet", and assumes it was
"installed there" when in fact the app is running on the cloud, and what is
installed on the tablet is just the launcher.

Just thinking aloud.

What do you mean by "get it all together"?.

Apache Open Office runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and several flavor of
Unix, always on Intel x86 and compatible hardware -which includes AMD
CPUs/APUs.

The iPad device from Apple doesn't use either OS-X operating system nor an
Intel or AMD CPU, but rather an ARM based CPU. So Apache Open Office cannot
run on iPads.

This "rollApp" is a product/service of a different entity/company, allowing
you to run a virtualized x86 app on the cloud, from your iPad, and you
should really take questions to them, not here, as this list has nothing to
do with rollApp's service.

You are confusing Javascript with Java. Different languages, different

Microsystems invention.

Most websites nowadays use JavaScript, not Java. GMail uses JavaScript, as
do all "AJAX" sites.

Java is rarely used on "web sites". Nowadays. Java is used on the server

for full blown desktop apps, outside the browser (Think: the Vuze

Those are most of the time not links, but advert banners.

Big difference. Web users should learn to know the difference between a
regular text link, a web page button and a bitmap (image) with text written
on it. Just hovering the mouse cursor over an banner image will usually
tell you (by looking at the browser's status bar) where that takes you if
you click.

In fact if you read the TEXT on the Sourceforge page it tells you that the
download is starting automatically in 5 seconds. "Your download will start
shortly" followed by "Your download will start in 5 seconds". Which
counts down to zero when it finally starts.

I have installed an adverts blocker in my browser so I don't even see
whatever 3rd party advert banner the site might want to show me.

See this screenshot for what I mean:

(on the screenshot I was downloading another program, not AOO, but the
point is made)

PS: Every time I see someone saying "you should ditch Sourceforge" I'm
forced to repeat the same: Sourceforge.net has one feature that IMHO all
other alternatrives lack, namely LOCAL MIRRORS. I'm down in Argentina and
the nearest SF.net mirror is in Brazil, so my download is initiated from
the Brazilian mirror. SF.net has local mirrors all around the world

It's English language. Every word has ameaning.
"Add" means to, well, add a new dictionary or extension
"Disable" means to disable a given extension (that you highlight from the
list of installed extensions).
"Remove" means to, gee, remove a given extension (that you highlight from
the list of installed extensions).

And guess what "check for updates" does?
Yes! It checks if a given installed extension has updates, by automatically
checking on the extensions web site.

Si no, puedes exportar tu documento a Microsoft Word (.DOC), desde la

puedes grabar, uno de ellos es MS Word (doc).

The answer to your question is YES, the ODT format can be opened by soneone

files (like Apache Open Office for Mac).

Failing that, you can export (save) your document into Microsoft Word

The program does not uninstall it by itself. It should stay installed

If you fail to see the programt, do this to check the app is still present

This will bring the Windows add and remove programs
You should see an alphabetically-sorted list of applications in your

Please do this and get back to us telling us if you indeed see the program

And next time you see it disappearing. Repeat this procedure and see if
the app is still listed there.

Maybe it's just the desktop shortcut that gets erased from your system (by

you need to reinstall the app. The app will continue to be there.

I hope this helps.

Sometimes I need to write up or edit text in Spanish or German, so I

This is the wrong approach, IMHO. The right approach is to type your
Spanish characters using your English layout keyboard.

How? simple... switch your keyboard configuration to Spanish-Traditional
(in Windows XP to 7, this is done from Control Panel, under regional
settings, click on the Languages tab and then on the details button.

Here is a screenshot:
http://ow.ly/i/71NFU

From XP to Win7 I know this works and I have tested it, in Linux it depends
on your distro how to make the change. Windows 8 and above it should also
work too, but I have no idea if Microsoft has shuffled around the
configuration like they often do).

When you set up your keyboard layout to be Spanish-Tradtional and your
keyboard is of US English layout, the accented characters are easily typed
by using the ' character, followed by the letter you want accented. For
example to type á I have to type first ´ then a, and it becomes á.

To type the ñ character, you just type it directly. The ñ chracter is
produced by pressing the ; key (next to the L).
You will also notice that in this mode, other two important keys change the
character produced, namely and which become ; and :

But Windows also allows you to configure a hotkey to switch between
keyboard layouts, so I set up two layouts, first US/English and second
Spanish/Traditional. And I set up the hotkey Ctrl-Shift 1 and Ctrl-Shift-2
to switch between the two.

Again, here is a screenshot of what the config looks like:
http://ow.ly/i/71NGy

Once you get used to this, you'll be switching between the two layouts
effortlessly and at will in the middle of your typing without any major
interruption or even mouse clicking at all.

Note: I live in a Spanish speaking country, Spanish is my native language,
yet, I have NEVER owned a Spanish layout keyboard. All my keyboards are of
the US English layout.

Why? Because the Spanish layout keyboards are a pain to use for programmers
like me, the backslash is often in an akward position, and many characters
that are used all the time for programming often involve one more keypress
or the akward AltGr key to get a character that you get with a single key
press in a US English keyboard.

Hope this helps.

Open Office has been over 15 years in the making (counting only from the

bugs are fixed. That's why Windows downloads updates via WindowsUpdate

package manager/system updater.

If you look in the changelog for the soon-to-be-released version 4.1.1, you
will see several bug fixes related to crashes too.

Why don't you wait a few weeks and then try the updated 4.1.1? It would be
silly to make a drastic determination based on a handful of nasty bugs that
have been already fixed.

I think you must be talking about part of the information embedded by
AOO in documents your create with your software. That is part of the
document properties. Microsoft Office does the same, as far as I know.

See
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/inspect-documents-for-hidden-data-and-personal-information-HA010074435.aspx

If you plan to share an electronic copy of a Microsoft Office Word
document with clients or colleagues, it is a good idea to review the
document for hidden data or personal information that might be stored
in the document itself or in the document properties (metadata).
Because this hidden information can reveal details about your
organization or about the document itself that you might not want to
share publicly, you might want to remove this hidden information
before you share the document with other people.
(...)

What types of hidden data and personal information are stored in Word
documents?
Several types of hidden data and personal information can be saved in
a Word document. This information might not be immediately visible
when you view the document in Office Word 2007, but it might be
possible for other people to view or retrieve the information.

Word documents can contain the following types of hidden data and
personal information:
(...)
Document properties and personal informationDocument
properties, also known as metadata, include details about your
document such as author, subject, and title. Document properties also
include information that is automatically maintained by Office
programs, such as the name of the person who most recently saved a
document and the date when a document was created. If you used
specific features, your document might also contain additional kinds
of personally identifiable information (PII), such as e-mail headers,
send-for-review information, routing slips, and template names.

The above is for Microsoft's office products but also applies to AOO.

In Apache OpenOffice, go to the menu option File-Properties, and in
the General tab remove the check box from Apply user data.

Hope this helps!

AOO 4.1 presentation looks fine in AOO, skewed background exported to PPT and played w MS Ppoint Viewer 2007...

2014-05-30 Thread Fernando Cassia
AOO 4.1 here. XP64

I created a multi-slides (66 slides so far) presentation using one of
the templates.

When I preview the slideshow in AOO 4.1,everything looks fine.

As soon as I export the presentation to MS Powerpoint, and load it in
MS Powerpoint Viewer 2007, the background bitmap, which looked
stretched to fill the whole screen and as such with text centered on
it, becomes 1/3 of the screen on the powerpoint viewer 2007, and as
such text gets overlaid over the borders of the bitmap.

What is going on here?. Obviously something having to do with AOO 4.1
Impress making the background bitmap stretched to fill the screen,
and on the contrary, that attribute is not carried over to the PPT
export, so MS Powerpoint Viewer 2007 just shows the bitmap with its
original absolute pixel size (not stretched) and as a result text gets
over the borders...

Solution?

Thanks in advance.

You' ve never done that, or did you? Because if you attempt to remove

CD-R (and DVD-R) discs have the data layer on the opposite side of the

upper side of the disc). Thus, when you put a label on top of a CD-R

As in

Thicker labels made for color inkjets with glossy finish tend to have
stronger adhesives than slimmer labels made for laser printers.

The day I damaged a CD-R trying to remove a label it was a Neato brand
of the glossy finish type for inkjets. The CD-R was also a very low

Not all CD-R discs are created equal
http://www.kmgdigitalinc.com/downloads/1906Not_created_equal.pdf

To protect the coatings, lacquer is applied, and high-quality
manufacturers make it nice and thick or will even apply
a separate protective coating. Poor CDRs have very little protection
on the coatings and will scratch easily, or
worse, delaminate.

It shows. Some comments below each of your statements

 What is FOSS

  FUD

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty_and_doubt

and why would any of us think Open Office is pretty much only a memory
 (per Mr Cassia).?

I didnt say that. I quoted an article. And included the URL so that others
could read it in its entirety.

How and why is Mr Cassia in this List group If he detests AOO so much

Please try to understand what you read before you accuse someone of
something. The purpose of my e-mail was to alert the group of yet another
article smearing Apache Open Office. I do support AOO, I use it daily.

The rest of my message, which you failed to grasp, tried to highlight that
the arguments used by some in the LO camp against AOO are the same used by
MariaDB against MySQL, in a nutshell that:

-that a corporation being the main contributor to an open source project is
in itself a bad thing
-that dual licensing is bad (not used against AOO but was used against Sun
OpenOffice.org before, and Oracle after that)
-that AOO contributors were mostly IBMers - MDB accuses MySQL of being
developed mostly by Oracle employees
-that forking in the name of community gives better results overall for
the health of a project rather than engaging with the upstream corporate
sponsor of it.

I personally think -like Canonical's Shutleworth-
1. that the OO.o-LO fork was an unfortunate event
2. That the split hurt both projects more than it helped
3. That the reasons invoked for the split were magnified, and included a
large dose of FUD (I guess you know what it means by now)
4. That part of the IT press played a role in magnifying Fear, Uncertainty
and Doubt, hence creating a self fulfilling prophecy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-fulfilling_prophecy

Those were my thoughts. If high-level historical analysis of events
confuses you, please, dont answer.

Thanks Andrea.

I remember trying this one back in the 2.x days and it didn't work,
some issue with login refused.

Sadly this was a common issues with the Sun created extensions... I
remember one for posting directly to Blogger throwing weird errors as
well.

It looked to me at the time that the log-in part was put together
without much thought to making it as independent of the changes on
the server side as possible, so that the slightest change made the
plugins break. :-/

I hope someone has the time to update both extensions (this one for
wikis and the other one to interface with Blogger) so that those can
work with future AOO versions...

1. Thanks for your idea, it's very interesting.
2. I hate that idea, AOO should have nothing to do with wikis.

You're welcome.

(and MySQL too, and probably the same that would like for Oracle's
investments in FOSS to end).

LibreOffice, as you know, is now the defacto office suite of choice
among Linux users and is rapidly gaining traction in the Windows world
as well.
OpenOffice is pretty much only a memory
http://www.linuxtoday.com/upload/oracle-losing-its-mysql-grip-to-mariadb-130916110509.html

Citebite archive: http://pages.citebite.com/l2e1g0y0r4kpb

Apparently the original story has been pulled from FOSSFORCE.COM, but
not before it was widely spread around...

This is the same scenario as when Googles move from MySQL to MDB is
mirrored everywhere, yet Mozilla's decision, on technical merits to
move from MDB to MySQL 5.6 gets no mention whatsoever.

https://twitter.com/sheeri/status/372099540624478208

Of course, truth is just a small peeble in the shoes of a good FUD
campaign... doesnt stop them. Apache OpenOffice or MySQL: the tactics
are the same, lie, lie, and lie again.

Some of the lies stick and become common, widespread truths repeated
without fact-checking. The rest is herd behaviour and copy-paste IT
journalism. Case in point:http://tinyurl.com/muktware-liars vs reality
http://tinyurl.com/lsvya6f

Or: http://pages.citebite.com/c2u1y0m0q5vti vs:reality:
https://twitter.com/myfear/status/380190532552884225

This isnt healthy. It needs to stop.

In the wise words of Shuttleworth: http://pages.citebite.com/e7v0f3m9sder

Is the Evil Empire of Redmondia behind this campaign to portray IBMers
as inept (Rob Weir has mentioned some of the FUD coming from the ither
side wrt Sidebar and IBMs contributions) and Oracle as evil, when both
firms are investing a lot in FOSS development (in the case of Oracle,
investing a lot in Linux kernel engineers, OpenJDK, Netbeans,
Glassfish, releasing JavaFX 2.0 under a GPL license, Virtualbox,
etc..) Or is someone else behind this persistent FUD? Some firm that
perhaps wants its web services to replace everything else?

Thinking aloud

Wiki editing plug-in?

2013-09-16 Thread Fernando Cassia
If you ever tried editing complex tables like this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_tablet_computers
on a wiki using wiki syntax you will soon see that it's a hair-pulling
exercise.

Even with the wikipedia's new Ajax online wysiwyg editor, table editing
is stil not even there.

So, is there a plugin allowing to use AOO to edit wiki articles (including
tables), and pushing changes back on-line effortlessly?

If not, there's an idea: there should be.

Lynn,

You, or someone with access to your PC subscribed your e-mail address
to the users@openoffice.apache.org mailing list.

A mailing list is like a web discussion forum, but with each message
delivered by e-mail to your mailbox.

In fact, mailing lists existed way before web based forums, and many
people prefer them to forums.

Now, if you didnt subscribe, someone with access to your PC did.

If you want to unsubscribe (remove your address from the mailing list)
send an empty email to the following address

users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org

After that, you will receive in your mailbox a response e-mail. Hope this helps!
