[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
As my father recently said to me in an armchair session, it is not the hundreds of fish taken that one remembers, but those few heavy trout taken or lost under difficult conditions. Just the knowledge that a big fish is present adds flavor to the pool. Ernest G. Schwiebert, Jr. º * JIMMY D. [VFB] How to preserve elk hyde?
I have a nice piece of elk rump. I want to remove all the fat and what ever else is there but I want the hyde to be pliable. I have dried other pieces of hyde with borax and salt, but it was always very hard and stiff. When you buy a piece of deer fur the hyde is usually very flexible. Can any one tell me what kind of chemicals are used ? Thank you, Alan Di Somma You know your a redneck when: You can entertain yourself for more than 15 minutes with a fly swatter. http://www.azflyfishing.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Re: [VFB] How to preserve elk hyde?
Alan, Any taxidermy shop can help you through the multi-step process, but an overview for tannning that will give you a soft leather hide like you find in shops is on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanning It is involved, and when I wanted hides tanned, I brought them into a tannery and he added them to his batches for a minimal fee. My suggestion, if you don't actually want to learn it yourself. If you do, there's different methods depending on the results you want. I would love to know how Wapsi gets their hides done. The leather is awesome and the hair is never brittle. Hope this helps. Re: [VFB] Problem with tying this critter
Thanks, DonO and Joyce, Maybe I need to explain further. I too can and do make mono eyes from several sizes of monofilament line. That is not the problem. The problem is getting the mono to fuse together. I'm gonna try and acquire some different brands of mono to try, but of the four I've tried so far, they want to melt away from each other when the ends are heated while holding them in a pair of needlenose pliers, hemostats, or tweezers. I will go dig out some of my weedeater cutting line to see if that works, and will report back. I have several sizes of weedeater line, but may not have any small enough. We'll see. BTW, can you melt the mono with a cautery without messing up the tool? Rodger -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Re: [VFB] Problem with tying this critter
I melt with the cautery with no problems. Any left over plastic will simply burn off the end of it when you are done..just push the on button with nothing on the end. I don't think the cautery cares what i burns and melts. When you use the cautery, just hold it really close to the end of the mono and it will ball up. Re: [VFB] Problem with tying this critter
PS: have a cold piece of metal and just push the end of the hot mono onto it if you want a flat eye. Re: [VFB] How to preserve elk hyde?
A friend of mine used to tack a hide to plywood and cover it with Borax and leave it laying flat for about a month and his turned out pretty good but not sure if he did anything else to it or not. I do know all the flesh has got to be removed or it may rot I've also heard salt will work but never trying it myself not sure what would work best.I know you can buy some stuff from Vandykes that will tan a hide and it's powder form.. - Original Message - From: Don Ordes To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, May 11, 2010 10:08 PM Subject: Re: [VFB] How to preserve elk hyde?
