Re: Question: Trying to Remember the name of an iOS App that Allowed Off-Road Navigation for the Blind and Low Vision

2024-01-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
this is called the getting warmer feature, and essentially after you’ve marked
a location you’d like to go to regularly, you can then pull it up, and will
tell you, approximately how far away it is, and what direction it is. With
voice stream, and probably therefore, Voice Vista the direction was marked by
tones in your ears to give fairly precise, directional information.
blindSquare, good maps, my way light all have some feature like this.

Rotor New Settings in iOS17

2024-01-03 Thread Mike B.
 Original Message
  From: Richard Turner

This is likely the same in iOS 17.2... but has anyone else been bothered
by the fact that the rotor, especially in the mail app, instead of
defaulting to Actions, it defaults to headings? I find each time I open the
mail app, and land on a message or thread, I have to change the rotor to
actions in order to flick up to delete the message or thread.

Hmm, good point, I had not yet noticed this, but you are correct, in iOS
17.3 Beta (not sure if this was already like that in iOS 17.2, you now have
the following options when you go to Settings > Accessibility > Voiceover >
Rotor:

First of course the Back button at the top left and then the heading “Rotor”.

If you swipe right you then have “Rotor Items, button” and when you double
tap on this you have the familiar list of things you can select, deselect
and reorder.

If you swipe right again, you now have this new item called “”Change rotor
with item, switch button” and of course it can be “On” r “Off”. Swipe right
again and you hear the following description:

Changes the selected rotor based on the Voiceover focused item.

For me this was On, so maybe check if it is on or not and if it is not, turn
it on and see if it gives you the more familiar experience.

And just to be complete, if you swipe right again, you get “Edit apps on
home screen, switch button, on”, again it was on for me.

Swipe right one final time and you get “Direct Touch Apps, button” and after
that the explanation:

Direct Touch allows Voiceover to control an app directly without requiring
more interactions.

I have to yet try this, but if I double tap on the button it then says:

“Direct Touch apps, heading”, after this “Apply To, heading” and then it
goes into a list of all apps and items on my iPhone and by default they all
say “Selected” for me.

Then if I swipe right I

Re: Apple watch and sleep focus

2024-01-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I finally got taptic time to work for me on my SE watch.
I had to turn off raise to speak time in the VoiceOver settings, which didn’t
seem to do anything.
Thanks for all the notes, otherwise I would have just thought it was an
unreliable service when VoiceOver is running. I was only able to get taptic
time to work when I didn’t want it, like when removing the watch from my wrist.

RE: Apple watch and sleep focus

2024-01-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, I received another message from Apple Accessibility yesterday where this
was also explained. I assume this was sent on to a higher level because the
first response I received simply stated what the support article said which is
a 1-finger double tap for hours and minutes and a 1-finger triple tap for just
minutes. In fact, they even pointed out " If the watch is awake, place your
palm over the watch face to put it to sleep or if Wake on Wrist Raise is turned
on, turn your wrist downwards and then perform the one-finger double tap. We
tested this with a Sleep Focus enabled and managed to get the same results".
Below is the entire conversation I had regarding this starting with my initial
message, their reply, my response and then the second message where they state
an additional tap is required if any type of focus is active:

From: Apple Accessibility
Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2023 11:39 AM
To: siegh...@outlook.com
Subject: Re: RE: Haptic time on /apple Watch

Hello Sieghard,

Expected behavior with Taptic Time while VoiceOver is enabled is to use a
one-finger double tap to feel hours and minutes, or a one-finger triple tap for
just the minutes.
This is with the screen locked.
If the watch is awake, place your palm over the watch face to put it to sleep
or if Wake on Wrist Raise is turned on, turn your wrist downwards and then
perform the one-finger double tap. We tested this with a Sleep Focus enabled
and managed to get the same results.

If you are receiving different results when trying these above steps, we
recommend partnering with a member of our AppleCare Accessibility Support team
to further troubleshoot. If they are unable to resolve the concern through
troubleshooting, then they can escalate their findings to the appropriate teams
for further investigation.

You will find the contact information for the team in the following support
article:

Sincerely,

Hello Sieghard,

We wanted to quickly follow up and clarify that in order to use Taptic Time in
any of the Focus modes that turn of the display, like the Sleep Focus does,
you will need to tap the screen once to wake it before performing the
double-tap for Taptic Time. The gesture should be performed as “one, one-two”
in a relatively quick manner.

Hi all,

I got a reply from Apple accessibility and actually, three taps is correct as
you have to tap it once to wake it up. Hope that clarifies it; it’s not a bug.

Right, because for you that setting is on.

For some odd reason, mine was off. Once I turned it on, all works as expected.

Hmm, good point, I had not yet noticed this, but you are correct, in iOS 17.3 Beta (not sure if this was already like that in iOS 17.2, you now have the following options when you go to Settings > Accessibility > Voiceover > Rotor:

First of course the Back button at the top left and then the heading “Rotor”.
If you swipe right you then have “Rotor Items, button” and when you double tap on this you have the familiar list of things you can select, deselect and reorder.
If you swipe right again, you now have this new item called “”Change rotor with item, switch button” and of course it can be “On” r “Off”. Swipe right again and you hear the following description:
Changes the selected rotor based on the Voiceover focused item.
For me this was On, so maybe check if it is on or not and if it is not, turn it on and see if it gives you the more familiar experience.
And just to be complete, if you swipe right again, you get “Edit apps on home screen, switch button, on”, again it was on for me.
Swipe right one final time and you get “Direct Touch Apps, button” and after that the explanation:
Direct Touch allows Voiceover to control an app directly without requiring more interactions.
I have to yet try this, but if I double tap on the button it then says:
“Direct Touch apps, heading”, after this “Apply To, heading” and then it goes into a list of all apps and items on my iPhone and by default they all say “Selected” for me.

Then if I swipe right I

I did notice a VO setting to change the default rotor location. Perhaps changing this will give you back the old behavior.

2024-01-03 Thread matthew dyer
I think I remember seeing this in 17.2. I can’t remember,ber if it was
headings though. This at least seems to be the case in an open message. In
the message list, this seems to be set to actions.

I would use Voice Vista for at least part of the strategy, and set a beacon at
your front door. I think BlindSquare has a similar capability, perhaps many gps
apps for the blind do.

Good afternoon.
would either of these apps allow me to more easily navigate the paths in my
apartment complex? There are multiple buildings and lots of pathways between
them. I would love to take walks there in the spring, but I fear not being
able to find my way back to my building. Would either of these apps help? Or
would another app be better? Or does anyone have any solutions for this
problem

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!

Many years ago, there was an iOS app for the blind and low vision
that would allow one to drop a virtual pin at point A and then drop
subsequent pins to any location, on or off road, then would provide
feedback when the user wanted to travel that same path in the future.

I remember using it to walk to my mailbox, many, many years ago, at night.
It was quite a nice little app and I wonder if it is still around
 or was renamed or something.

I think the last time I used it was back in 2014, or thereabouts.

Does anyone recall the name of the app or does anyone know of a
similar app that provides the same functionality, these days?

All replies appreciated and, again, Happy New Year to Everyone!

Hi all,

I got a reply from Apple accessibility and actually, three taps is correct as
you have to tap it once to wake it up. Hope that clarifies it; it’s not a bug.

All the best
