I followed https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:InstanceConfigMediawiki to

I simply added role::mediawiki-install::labs and memcached, and gave it
labs_mediawiki_hostname= ee-flow-big.pmtpa.wmflabs

It seems stuck. No Apache running, no memcached, nothing in /srv.
There have been several puppet runs, they all fail with:

Open a page's edit window
Add a input value of 'wpUndidRevision' with some valid revid. Save.
Whoever made that edit will receive an extremely confusing Echo notification.

This can easily be exploited by adding the same parameter to an edit made via
the API. A warning will be displayed, but the notification is still sent.

Ideas on how to fix:

Temporary: Check that $rev->getTitle() == $article->getTitle()

Maybe also look into using sha1's to only show reverts for exact reverts.

Long term: Find some other way than using a request value like wpUndidRevision
to trigger a notification.

Allow users to input a Category and use all the pages in it as targets.

Ideally we should use the same input box as the existing one, so we might want
to prevent users from using {{#target:}} in NS_CATEGORY since the form would

Hmm ... I guess somehow this one fell through the cracks or we have had
regressions (which means our wt-escaping tests have holes in them). I was sure
this was being handled already, and a cursory glance through the escaping code
shows that there are checks for extensions, etc. Anyway, we will investigate

It would be great if the preview could also evaluate the first field ("Page

I guess this might also affect Commons

It looks like this issue prevents MM from being used for most of the usual
global message deliveries to village pumps, so it's great that we already have
a patch, and a timely review and deployment would be useful.

[Bug 56346] Language names blurred and difficult to read using the hardcoded "Autonym" font on Windows computers

2013-11-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56346

--- Comment #73 from Philippe Verdy  ---
Also the "missinglyph" item of the SVG is just mapped with an advance-width
equal to the space character; it has no path for the glyph itself, where it
should have a path drawing an empty box in that space.

The unselectable glyphs seem to come from an incomplete conversion tool, that
does not know really how to map the glyphs selectable by OpenType features into
the necessary mappings for making them selectable by the SVG font.

An SVG font cannnot use OpenType feature, because it lacks the logic included
in the OpneType renderers to select these features. OpenType features have
implicit selection rules from the script and character properties. Then each
feature adds GSUB and GPOS rules for mapping glyph definitions. In an SVG font,
all the implicit rules must be mapped (the only exception supported by current
relase of the SVG font spec being the Arabic joining type). This means that
Indic script cannot work with simple one-to-one mappings of a character code to
a glyph, with their required features. You need to map Unicode strings (not
characters) into a SVG glyph definition to support the equivalent of contextual
substitutions, and use the "hkern" (or "vkern") definitions to support the
equivalent of OpneType GSUB (for contextual positioning).

I think that the tool used to convert OpenType fonts to SVG font is
insufficient for "complex scripts" (those that have REQUIRED features needed;
see the OpenType specfiications). This means that extra manual tweaking are
needed in the SVG font to make it work correctly (the existing tool is not
doing things properly with its one-to-one character-to-glyph mappings, and its
bogous unselectable zero-to-one mappings).

For this project, just uploading the generated fonts into the MediaWiki
repository is clearly not enough, there should exist a full project containing
or documenting the build tools used to perform these conversions.

I personally am not very fond of the "Draft:" name for this namespace.
Technically, everything on wiki is a "draft" and this doesn't seem to show how
it is different from any other article. I would prefer to see such a namespace
named something more like "Concept:" which indicates that these particular
drafts are not ready for full inclusion in the wiki yet and are still in the
"idea" and "development" stage. Perhaps I'm being to nit-picky and specific
and the majority of the rest of everyone else really doesn't care what it is
named, but I wanted to make sure I got my opinion in (since everyone has
one)...

[Bug 42606] Warn that patches should go to Gerrit instead of Bugzilla

2013-11-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42606

--- Comment #17 from Dereckson  ---
What procedure did you followed to update the change?

You can for example do the following :

# 1 - go to the git branch where the code is
git checkout bug/42606

# 2 - edit the file

# 3 - Amend the previous commit and send modified version to Gerrit
git add createformcontents.html.tmpl
git commit --amend
git review -R

[Bug 57165] Flow: [[#anchors]] don't work

2013-11-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57165

--- Comment #2 from sp...@wikimedia.org ---
The fix for bug 54892 will probably fix this. Then anchor links to spans with
ids or to the {{anchor}} template should work. Unlike article pages, Flow
doesn't create an anchor for a heading in a post

If you find some ID in a nearby post and use that in a [[#anchor]] link, it
won't work reliably, because Flow doesn't load all topics on the page at once.
Instead copy and paste the post's permalink.

importml.sh calls /bin/bash instead of locating bash in the default prompt.

This behavior is fine on Linux, but bash could be located at different places,
like /usr/local/bin/bash on FreeBSD or /opt/ts/bin/bash on Solaris.

[Bug 56485] Catches non-http/https links, but cannot whitelist them via MediaWiki:Captcha-addurl-whitelist

Should have checked the bug list beforehand. This above modification would be
much appreciated.

On the English Wikivoyage, we have added tel:// protocol links to phone numbers
so that users can dial through on their mobile phones. However, since tel://
links are considered external links, all new phone numbers added now require a
CAPTCHA to be filled.

I checked MediaWiki:Captcha-addurl-whitelist, but it seems that it is
restricted to HTTP/HTTPS. Is it possible to modify it to accept tel:// links,
and maybe even geo:// links?

Legal's opinion has been accurately conveyed here. We are comfortable with
putting the archive table in Labs as long as the edit summary is redacted.
Dario also asked me about providing metadata. We are ok with this as long as
the metadata provided does not include IPs (that are otherwise nonpublic) or
location information.

With the above patch, new uploads may still hit a delay or timeouts due to a
libtiff bug for some files, though views of them will be fast. Categories and
pages using them will also be fast now. ?action=purge will still be slow for
effected file description pages.

Did not really look for the extent of that one, but see that example:

The is a CC-licensed photo of a PD object − which is fairly common − so there
is both aa CC-BY-SA tag and a PD-old-100 one.

(note this is a somehow nice case because license are nested into {{copyright
information}} tag which labels what copyright status is for what)

The API returns :

"LicenseUrl": {
"value": "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\n";,
"source": "commons-desc-page",
"hidden": ""
},
"LicenseShortName": {
"value": "Public domain",
"source": "commons-desc-page",
"hidden": ""
},
"UsageTerms": {
"value": "Public domain",
"source": "commons-desc-page",
"hidden": ""
},
"Copyrighted": {
"value": "False",
"source": "commons-desc-page",
"hidden": ""

Effectively mixing up both license.

As discovered today with the Wikidata weekly summaries run, MassMessage ignores
the namespace if it is a interwiki link.

Example; {{#target:Wikidata:Status updates|www.wikidata.org}}

The message gets delivered to https://wikidata.org/wiki/Status_updates which
then errors due to it being in NS_MAIN and not NS_PROJECT which was specified.

There's a good case that can be made for this, but it's hardly our place to
make it on behalf of every potential Mediawiki user. Make it not show by
default on our projects because our UX team estimates it will be beneficial?
Excellent. Remove the /capability/ to do otherwise because we *think* that
reasoning holds for everyon? Not so much.

When a user clicks on Switch to source editing option from the settings drop
down it tells user that switching to source editing will keep the changes made
in the document.But if a user attempts to switch from the tab it does not
retain those changes.This seemed confusing to me because when user uses the
"switch to source editing" , the "Edit Source" tab is selected ,indicating the
same destination for both action.

If a user can switch to source editing in multiple ways, i think it is better
both ways have similar mechanism of handling the changes to have uniform
experience.
Specially when switching from tab is one click away compared to the "[]switch
to source editing" option.

I don't why are those glyphs present but I think they won't be used anyway if
they don't have `unicode` attribute. If someone knows for sure they are not
needed, then I guess they can be removed. BTW selecting characters (and
copy&paste) works fine for me for all characters used for Main Page.

Yes, I think the redirected page should exist as a regular wikipage after the
redirect has happened. This allows any editor to un-redirect something without
needing a special form or other interface, edit the redirect easily, etc.

Consider this real case from English Wikipedia:

* Someone originally made "Deforestation in Brazil" a redirect to the
Deforestation section in Amazon Rainforest. This isn't bad, but they're not
actually aliases of each other precisely. This happens more than you'd think.
* Later, someone un-redirected Deforestation in Brazil, and expanded it to be a
large independent article. This was made easy by the fact that redirects are
still wiki pages. Otherwise, there'd have to be new background processes to
re-make a redirect as a wiki page.

Part of the challenges with the current implementation, which involves using
somewhat arcane markup, will be solved by VisualEditor.

Not just OS, but revdel stuff too - it's not that uncommon to just delete
rather than revdel-each-edit-and-delete, since from a user POV it leads to the
same outcome (content is only visible to sysops)

[Bug 41363] Create simple interface for adding a page redirect to MediaWiki core

2013-11-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #4 from Jared Zimmerman (WMF) ---
Can someone elaborate on some of the most common use cases for creating
redirects to give a bit more background to this for new users not as familiar.

Also, is this a band aid? do we need to step back and think about the reason
redirects are created in the first place? Does mediawiki support the concept of
page aliases? Does the redirected page need to continue to exist as a regular
wikipage after the redirect has happened?

To be clear, I did not ignore third party use cases when implementing this. I
worked under the theory that the small, targeted messages and links we added
(e.g. createacct-helpusername, createacct-helpusername-link, and
createacct-imgcaptcha-help) would be enough to replace the long text at the
start and end, for MW wikis in general.

The idea was that inline placement and linking (instead of of long messages on
the page itself) would be more user-friendly and encourage concise messages.

On Wikimedia Commons, users may indicate how they wish to be attributed through
two specific mechanisms.

One is the {{Credit line}} template − see for example [1]

The other one is the attribution parameter of license templates − see for
example [2]

As documented in [3], the attribution line in the second mechanism is marked
with a − the first one is not but I just made a
proposal for it to be.

This information should be retrieved by CommonsMetadata.

Making a message named something like "signupstart" that does not denote its
purpose is a terrible idea, which is why it was removed in the first place.
Every non-essential piece of text is a distraction and an impediment to people
signing up quickly and painlessly. This has a very real and lasting negative
impact on users of the signup form.

There's an obvious need for adding legal disclaimers to the signup page on
Labs. Let's do that. There is not a clear use case for anything else. No one
has made clear why it's a good idea to have generic blank MediaWiki messages
lying around essential parts of Core. Encouraging site admins to add random
cruft to one of the most important forms on any wiki is not okay, which is
precisely why the message was removed.

This sounds reasonable to me as well. If some Wikimedia wikis are abusing it,
please work with them about it instead of killing the message.

I'm copying Michelle from Legal so she can help us figure out the rationale for
blanking edit summaries, in response to comment 3.

One possible reason (credits go to Ironholds): "lazy" page deletion for content
that should have been oversighted may result in the snippet of the original
page to be stored in the summary of the first revision of that page (and
accidentally exposed if the summary is not censored).

Third party users already using this message would likely prefer that too ;).

Right, so un-remove the thing that was already there most likely for reasons

[Bug 57459] New: VisualEditor: Automatic naming scheme for references produces meaningless names like

Bug ID: 57459
   Summary: VisualEditor: Automatic naming scheme for references
produces meaningless names like
   Product: VisualEditor
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General
  Assignee: jforres...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: wmf.whatamido...@yahoo.com
CC: jforres...@wikimedia.org, krinklem...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Intention:
Re-use a reference.

Actual Results:
The ref naming scheme needs improvements so that humans can remember which ref
name they want to re-use, especially if they are using the wikitext editor,
where they will not have any of the possible hints that VisualEditor may
provide.

Expected Results:
A system that is "xxx:0", where "xxx" is text simply copied out from the
beginning of the named ref would be an improvement. We can assume that
anything inside the ref is in a language that the editor is capable of coping
with. We can exclude the names of templates and their parameters, as well as
"http" (otherwise, bare URLs in refs will produce a lot of equally unfriendly
 names).

Reproducible: Always
