Re: [WISPA] tower lighting

2008-04-21 Thread Kenneth M. Chipps Ph.D.
We had the same thing about a mile from us. A couple of the neighbors
called the tower owner. They changed it to white strobes during the day
and red lights after dusk controlled by a sensor. I did not ask the
neighbors how much trouble it was, but the change happened pretty
quickly so I assume not much.

Re: [WISPA] Grounding

2007-11-14 Thread Kenneth M. Chipps Ph.D.
Everything - I emphasize everything - should attach to a single point
ground system. The details are contained in the EIA/TIA-607 standard,
various portions of the National Electric Code, and any local codes that
apply. You can see some of this at
http://www.chipps.com/4/EquipmentInstallation.pptx,
http://www.chipps.com/5/WirelessEquipmentInstallationOutsideTowers.pptx,
and
http://www.chipps.com/5/WirelessEquipmentInstallationOutsideNotTower.pptx.
Each of these files is very large as they contain photographs. But you
need to read the standards or have someone who has do this for you.

Well, I hadn't really put much though into it, but what's the best way to
incorporate that ground into our server racks? We use raised flooring, so
should we have a ground from their block to our servers? Should our tower
be attached to the same ground?

RE: [WISPA] Tower hole size

2007-07-25 Thread Kenneth M. Chipps PhD
There is no rule of thumb. Contact the manufacturer as it depends on the
tower and the soil type where the tower will go. The foundation plan makes
certain assumptions about the soil. If your soil does not match these
assumptions, then the foundation will need to be altered. Usually this means
a bigger hole. There are geologist/soil engineers who do this.

I agree that fiber and wireless would circumvent the issue entirely.

The telco and cableco run copper from building to building.

RE: [WISPA] Industry failings

2006-12-04 Thread Ken Chipps
Organic growth is growth that is generated by the company itself through its
own efforts, as opposed to buying the growth. For example, if you are the
first to offer wireless Internet service in an area that you setup using
your own capital, then you have grown organically. In contrast, if you go to
an area and buy an existing provider, you have grown through acquisition. In
most industries organic growth is financed by cash flow or limited debt,
whereas growth through acquisition requires higher debt loads or an equity
offering.

[WISPA] WISP Going Out of Business Sale

2006-11-08 Thread Ken Chipps
I will be posting this on several lists, so please forgive the cross posts.
I have ten customers located in northern Johnson County Texas between
Burleson and Alvarado that need a service provider. I have been providing
Internet service to them for the past two years, but this is not my main
business. As such it has become more trouble than it is worth. Several of
these people work from home, so they are desperate. I also have a list of
about 30 people I have not been able to connect, who you could connect as
well. Anyone interested contact me offlist at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Brad, we do need to meet each other one
of these days since we are in the same city.

Interesting. I may have to look into this
further. I had heard that the Sprint service was slow from other users. What is
the best way to buy the hardware and monthly service for this? Is the Sprint
website the only source?

Why do you pay for this weather stuff? Why
not use one of the local TV station web sites or WeatherBug?

Hello Ken,

Yes, Mark is correct.  RDC is short
(in my book anyway) for Remote Desktop Control aka Terminal Services or Citrix
etc…

Yes, I subscribe to www.wunderground.com for my weather
information.  The $5 a year it costs is well worth the money IMO (in my
opinion).

Pulling current, animated radar images
over my Sprint DATA card has not given me any trouble.  Speed test confirmation
from www.testmy.net :

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Download Connection is:: 654 Kbps about 0.65 Mbps (tested
with 579 kB)

Download Speed is:: 80 kB/s

Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (Server 1)

Test Time:: 2006/09/18 - 4:26pm

Bottom Line:: 11X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 12.8 sec

Tested from a 579 kB file and took 7.25 seconds to complete

Download Diagnosis:: 90% + Okay : running at 96.04 % of your
hosts average (spcsdns.net)

D-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-814GRHMXW

I’ve seen well over 1Mbps before,
but even then 654Kbps isn’t that bad.  Latency typically looks like

While we are talking about wireless cameras I have a question related to
this. I need a camera at my front gate so I can see who is there. The
problem is the gate is 1/4 mile from the house. About half of this distance
is through a stand of oak trees. Do you think any of these cameras would
punch through that amount of tree cover? The camera and the receiver for it
would be have to mounted right at the height of the thickest part of the
trees.

Next it'll be used in a town that's got someone (they think kids) taking

This one has good resolution, a zoom lens, built in web server, audio and
video, built in motion sensor (though it will false alarm in the dark),
ethernet AND wireless. I paid about $500 for it. It's WELL worth the
price. I have a $150 dlink cam too. It's got a decent picture but I never
was able to get the dang thing to send pics to a server off site. I ended
up just giving it away. The Inscape ones can be had with an outdoor
enclosure and pan tilt zoom remote controls. I don't know exactly what
those would add to the price.

When I get it back I can set it up so you can view it if you'd like.

I found a great pdf file on Belden's site showing how to make shielded ends.
We use them on all of our AP's. Some CPE installs require shielded also.
Like a 900 Canopy recently sharing space with a ham radio in the 145MHz
range.

They have a Cable 101 section somewhere.

I'm interested in finding out how to make best use of shielded CAT5. Where
do I find connectors with the shielding, instructions for these things, etc?
I'm going to be working near some high RF spots and think that shielded CAT5
would be good to use.

Thanks

RE: [WISPA] Self Adhesive Mini PCB supports for Mikrotik

2006-08-27 Thread Ken Chipps
What brand and part number cable and connectors do you use for the CAT5E
cable?

-Original Message-

Subject: RE: [WISPA] Self Adhesive Mini PCB supports for Mikrotik

I myself use them at our tower sites at the bottom AND the top. I had a
tower get struck, directly and lost everything...including the switch at
the location. Since then, I figured 3mil volts can go through thin
cat5e jacketing. Even through the shielding if it isn't properly
grounded. Now I soldier the casings onto the crimp on ends when
possible so hopefully it will go to ground without hitting the copper
inside. I use the Hyperlink surge protection, and the keystone jacks
are for shielded cabling, so it goes to ground. The surge suppression
is just added protection. Remember, electricity takes the least path of
resistance, when metal heats up, it becomes more resistant. So that
bolt of lightning can go where it wants...

That said, I am giving the electricity 2 points to exit to ground, so
hopefully I don't lose any more equipment.

The tower is WELL grounded, it is an old AT&T sight, with the copper
mesh in the ground, and all buildings and towers have copper 5/8" or
larger going up the sides and cad welded to them and also to the grid
below ground. LOTS of money...

I don't at the CPE, just use the built-in surge suppression and
definitely ground the CPE for static. I see it as if the house gets
struck by lightning; they have more to worry about than internet... Now
if a tower gets struck, I have hundreds down, not 1.

Do you find that a surge supressor at the CPE is better then at the
