[WSG] positioning help, please
http://ricochet.org/new_floradise/arrangements.html http://ricochet.org/new_floradise/plants.html hey all, i'm having trouble positioning a background image. on the arrangements page, the two arrows have a blue border. the first problem i'm having is that bbedit, safari, firefox and opera (on a mac) all position it in a different location (#pre-nex). the desired result is to align with the left margin of the text above it. i would truly appreciate an explanation of where i'm going wrong. rgds, ron *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: memberh...@webstandardsgroup.org ***

Re: [WSG] First Attempt
kate, thought i'd throw in my two cents. firstly i was in your position a couple years ago, using dreamweaver. at a certain point i realized i didn't know what i was doing or what was going wrong when things didn't view properly. i hadn't heard anything about box models, didn't know what padding or margins were, and basically didn't understand anything about html. so i set dreamweaver aside and took the plunge. fortunately on the css-d list, someone was kind enough to take me under their wing and hold my hand... much like you are receiving here. it was a steep climb, yet i still have a few hairs left on my head. Opera has a good introduction to web design that might provide an overview. good luck. http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/1-introduction-to-the-web- standards-cur/ --ron On Nov 24, 2008, at 11:51 AM, Bruce wrote: kate wrote: Thanks Bruce, Best viewed lolol was funny to read because about three years ago someone created an awesome site for me with Wordpress. One day someone sent a mail to me to say did I know its the only browser your site works in *is IE5...honest to God Bruce when I put it in Validator (someone said to) there was over 400 errors. That lol was my first hard lesson learnt. I would not know how to hand code in Notepad but I am impressed by people that can..who knows I may try it. Thanks Bruce! Kate a help I came across 3 years ago was Layout Gala, a series of layouts by Alessandro Fulciniti. http://blog.html.it/layoutgala/ I found looking at these in an editor, and making changes such as adding inner div's taught me a lot. They have been rock solid across all browsers and op systems. I'm not saying everyone should make all sites with these, but saying these and others done by members here are a definite shortcut to learning, preferred from stating by scrating your head and looking at a blank screen in an editor lol. Of course there are many other methods that can and should be learned, and sites such as maxdesign and positioniseverything, (and many others in this group!), have a ton of important and vital information. To be the best, learn from the best... [WSG] positioning problems
hey all, i posted this on css-d this morning and couldn't get any takers. both file validate. http://www.ricochet.org/ricochet2/company_principal.html original page (above) validates and goes cross browser fairly well, i think. it has some scaling issues on fonts, messing badly with alignment. at issue was as the gray box expands vertically, it changes the positions of the arrows which are intended to let people cycle through the site quickly. i want the position of the arrows to remain constant, and wanted to move them under 'Communications Design' http://www.ricochet.org/ricochet2/company_principal_alt.html the page validates, works and scales well in firefox, but opera and safari push the #rightcol to the bottom left corner. looking for a remedy. any help? --ron *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***

Re: [WSG] Using target=_blank
hey steve, without going into pros and cons on the target attribute, roger johansson has an interesting article on the subject with a javascript solution the degrades to opening in the same window if java is turned off or pop ups blocked. some clients want what they want and won't be dissuaded. hope this helps http://www.456bereastreet.com/archive/200610/ opening_new_windows_with_javascript_version_12/ sorry about the top posting rgds, ron On Jul 25, 2007, at 2:48 AM, Ryan Lin wrote: Steve, The other aspect of XHTML Strict DTD, the client won't even know unless I take my time to explain everything but this target stuff is something they will notice if they ask me to open certain links in new window.
