No, I wiped out Debian, but it's an idea...

It won't let me do that, Lukas. The screen I can't get past is the one
to select the bootloader, not installing one is one of the options on
that screen but the 'OK' button just dones't seem to function on ANY
of the choices on that screen.

I guess I will take Len's advice and give it another try when the next
LTS version comes out. I've no real problem with Debian other than
they lag so far behind with some of their packaging, it's not as if I
HAVE to move over to Xubuntu immediately.

I suppose another idea would be to try the standard Ubuntu installer
and then put XFCE in myself (that one just occurred to me).

I think you were definitely right about it being something to do with
the BIOS, because what I tried was installing Xubuntu in a VirtualBox
VM running under Debian, using the same DVD as I'd used to try the
full installation, and it worked flawlessly.

It seems to be a bit more complicated than you suggest, though

because Debian seems to be using grub2 as well, and as I said
previously, doing a Debian installation using (near as dammit) the
same parameters, disks, etc still works flawlessly.

Anyway, I now have an environment where I can take a look at Xubuntu,
which was the aim in the first place, albeit I won't take much notice
of the response speed! :)

Thanks for the help, folks.

Well, I eventually found an answer to all this. The lockup occurs any
time that I try to install the bootloader to one of my large (4 TB)
drives. However, if I put the bootloader on my sole remaining 1.5 TB
drive, the installtion process works flawlessly. This would also
account for it working in the virtual machine, of course!

I don't *KNOW* that the problem will occur with any drive of 2TB or
larger, but it sure seems the most likely guess for a transition
point. :)

And no, it was NOT possible to get to the loop when trying to install
to the 4TB drive and then tell the installer to switch to the 1.5 TB
drive. That didn't get me out of the loop. I suspect that part of the
installer's code is also broken.

I noticed someone posting with this same problem (the loop) on the
Ubuntu forums, so I just posted a message there with my suspicions
about the drive size.

(now running on Ubuntu Studio, BTW, I have to install XFCE at some
point, I have a use for a lot of the Studio programs but I hate the
default interface ).

[xubuntu-users] JEdit broken by upgrade

2018-08-29 Thread Brian
I make occasional use of JEdit in sending a large text file where the
recipient is limited to 13,000 character e-mails - JEdit gives me a
running character count of what's in the cut-and-paste buffer, very
convenient!

As part of either the upgrade to 18.04 OR an upgrade of 18.04 (i.e. I
can't remember whether JEdit has ever run successfully under 18.04 or
not) something has broken, and I get a yard or so of Java error
messages when I try to run JEdit from a terminal (see below).

I'm afraid Java is a total mystery to me. So is anyone capable of
deciphering this for me? I've tried purging JEdit and reinstalling it,
the installation works just fine, no error messages. I've tried
reinstalling all the Java stuff I can find through Synaptic, same
again, no errors. If you know as much about Java as I do, then I guess
a secondary question is whether anyone can successfully run JEdit
under 18.04?

OK, all the errors that I get are blow. Thanks for any assistance.

Brian.

Another update. I nuked IBM Java with no adverse effects. The
procedure in the link above (a one-line edit for each version of Java
installed) seems to work just fine, JEdit is running again.

I'm not entirely sure what happened, but having got some assistance
from one of the JEdit authors, it appears that I've somehow got IBM
Java on here as well as other versions. Since JEdit seems to be the
only thing that's been broken, I'm reluctant to do a full
reinstallation to try to sort out the mess, it's a program I only use
for one specific task, and it's easier and quicker for me to write a
small FreePascal utility to do the job. If I find something else
that's broken, that may be a different matter.

One of the recent articles was lacking  link or citation.  I believe the

That's www.dedoimedo.com/computers/manjaro-ms-office-online.html, in case it

this assists in the discussion.
