Thurs. afternoon 3/30/23, to my great delight, I saw several dozen tree
swallows in all their splendor flitting hither & yon over the large open field
west of the factory. Becky was as delighted as I. We haven't yet seen any over
the lake or or the village ponds.
We had been out checking osprey

I sent a brief email earlier today but have yet to see it posted. I was
surprised to see 3 tree swallows this afternoon at the north end of Cayuga
Lake along lower Lake Rd. where it reunites with Rt. 89. They were
relatively close to the shore and winging southward.

I saw a single Tree Swallow at Tschache Pool on Monday, along with quite a few
Rusty Blackbirds. Great Blue Herons we’re visiting their nests west of the
tower.

I led a tour of Northern Montezuma WMA for 11 great folks Thursday afternoon.
The highlights were at the Morgan Rd. marshes in Savannah...2 Tree Swallows
(first of the season), 5 Bald Eagles, dozens of Tundra Swans, 2 Rough-legged
Hawks, an American Coot, and small flocks of American Black Ducks
At Ladoga close in. :-)

We have about 16 nest boxes scattered around our field. They were designed
and built for bluebirds and indeed every year some bluebirds have occupied 2
or 3 boxes. The other boxes have proved attractive to house sparrows, tree
swallows, and even chickadees. A couple of boxes serve as homes for f
This evening about 5:45pm I saw an estimated 150 scattered TREE SWALLOWS
southbound over Cayuga Inlet near Floral Avenue. They quit passing by before
the north wind kicked in, but that may have been due to time of day. I don't
know why they were headed south.

Late this morning atop Mt. Pleasant, I watched a pair of TREE SWALLOWS, at one
of the nest boxes along the road to the towers, starting territory and
courtship behaviors. The female (presumably) hung on the front, looking in the
hole, while the male (presumably) did "flutter flight" over her a
There were 4 Tree Swallows circling our field about noon today. Also a Barn
Swallow in and out of the barn today, maybe yesterday too. Three TVs over
the field today, leaving in the direction of Ithaca.

Heading out if Union Springs yesterday I screeched to a halt (no cars behind

Four Tree Swallows showed up this morning checking out the nest boxes in our

claiming an interest. There may be conflict.
Yesterday, the first bird we saw was a Harrier and the second was a Flicker.
Both birds have white rumps,
The thrill of thrills every spring is when the swallows return, swoop over my

them as they watch me, making their little chittering noises as I am

WHile video-ing bluebirds at Dryden Lake this morning, I saw two Tree Swallows
buzzing the various nestboxes. The bluebirds have an almost complete nest, and
are looking very "nesty". And on the home, along Ferguson Rd there was a
magnolia in full bloom. Oh dear, whatever is happening.
