Thanks! This was the problem. Now I have X windows
again. Some other stuff is not working completely
(the fonts look _bad_ all of a sudden), but I'm
running again.

Well, I needed a bunch of library packages from the
unstable (Woody) release, so I tried using apt-get
to do it, and it decided I needed to upgrade the X
packages as well. So okay, I wanted 4.0 anyway, but
here's the problem (after eliminating some intervening
steps):
$ X > /tmp/x.out 2>&1
