I am having the same problem, and have had it as long as I've been using
Ubuntu (Edgy and Feisty). The "activate" and "deactivate" menus are
greyed out, even when logged in as root, and even though my non-root
user has everything except root privs. I can connect via modem just

Anthony, thanks for your comment. When you have a suggestion like that
better to open a new bug rather than reopening one with an unclear
description so the bug submitter doesn't get extra mails if he doesn't

there's need to a sync cause it's available in debian, you can try to
install it for now as a workaround, the package is here:
