With 800x600 resolution the shotdown button (and the time display) in
the bottom right corner is (partially) outside the display area. This
makes it impossible to shut down the computer from the login screen.

Sorry, I have no ability to install Maverick at the moment. Mayber,
there is someone out there who has access to Maverick? The steps to
reproduce the issue are fairly simple and determinate. The easiest
option, it seems, is to have the Update Manager load the latest updates
from the server to bring

Scratch that. The space gets used when session and language choices
become visible.
So I suggest either justifying everything right instead of left or
moving the shutdown button to the right side.

The first patch was not suitable, because it would always close the active tab,
not the tab which was clicked on. Essentially I think the first patch was in

could write a compiz plugin to do it.
