Several birders looked for the Genesee County BBWD today. Birders in the
earlier part of the morning were successful but later birders were not,
despite persistent scanning from multiple vantage points. We left at 7:00
p.m. for an appointment and the others that were still there left at the
same
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge 12 August
Joe Giunta, Debbie Martin and I (Sy Schiff) birded the North end of the East
Pond. The water level is to be brought down a few more inches, but for now, it
is possible to walk on the west side with about, at most, 3 inches of mud in
just a few spots. (They

August 12 This morning the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck was eventually
found in the cat-tails in the usual spot. From Rt. 77 between Cayuga Pool and
Salt & Meadville Roads look west.

This would be at least a 3rd (not second) occurrence for NY state
following the very recent find
in Queens and Kings Counties (same bird) at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife
Refuge in N.Y. City. All

The location is in the Town of Alabama, Genesee County. Cayuga Pool
overlook is the big overlook on the east side of Rt 77, a couple of miles
north of the hamlet of Alabama where Rt 77 and Rt 63 separate when heading
north on Rt 77. Read below for more directions.

NB, for those following any of that brief excitement in Maine over a
plover, photos looked at do indicate almost certainly a larger than
average Semipalmated, and NOT a rare (mainly-Eurasian breeder) Common
