On a high tide this afternoon, the Shorebird highlights from a few hours
birding the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge are as follows:
AMERICAN AVOCET (1)
American Oystercatcher (4)
Black-bellied Plover (5)
Semipalmated Plover (14)
Stilt Sandpiper (3)
Least Sandpiper (14)
White-rumped Sand
I haven't been out birding for a while, and therefore was wondering what
species sighting would get me to sit down and post to this listserve once
again ? In this case, I actually did guess correctly, with "form" carrying
the day...north shore of L.I., mid-August , C.Nighthawk - yes !

This evening there was a remarkable shorebird diversity at Hempstead Lake State
Park. The majority were Lesser Yellowlegs and Semi Sands, but there was also
one Stilt Sandpiper (juv), one White-rumped Sandpiper (nonbr adult), and

friends at the Cabanas at Point Lookout today. Of course, I took a
walk to Nickerson Beach to check out the Colonies, where there are
still plenty of Black Skimmers and Common Terns around along with
