I had this when there was a mistake in my config. In my case it was because the
. and , were transposed in the IP address of the RDP server I had specified
because of a keyboard mapping error and a very fuzzy screen!

Start the application from a shell. (ctrl-alt-x)
Rightclick on the FreeRDP-icon -> properties -> command
Copy the command in a shell (e.g. middle mouse button) and press enter.
Then you'll receive some startup information.

I’ve also just made a fresh install with no upgrades/updates whatsoever of the
vmware image and still have the same problem…
