Hmmm... should I take the 40lb.gas pipe bike or the Roadeo to the Alps this
weekend?

Ha, Garth -- then I'll trade you that Bomba for the rusting out Magna
sitting behind my building any day -- just let me know when you're ready.
John G -- I never did a conversion but I moved through two Riv's (Bleriot &
Slauki) onto Jeff Lyon's L'avecaise 650b model and I agree -- this

Yes, I get it, I understand living in the moment, its hard to say a bike is a
bike & a tire is a tire is a tire when you ride a Rivendell! And while I'm as
likely to roll a $12 tire as a $60 tire there's no denying that 90% of the
time the expensive tire will be better. Sometimes it's not $48.
A bike is a bike is a bike is a bike, we all know this. There are no
limits to a bike, regardless of it's name, shape, color, and every and any
concept of a bike. Tàke all those 80's mtb's for example, they were then
and still are ridden everywhere on any surface, they too are just a bike,
Somewhat related to John's story. I bought my Hunq to be a majority trail
bike with some roads (usually necessary to get to the trails in Oakland and
Berkeley). I've since picked up a Jones for most of my trail riding so the
Hunq, while initially a trail bike, is now mostly ridden on roads. It work
Hi Jeffrey,
Order placed for a set of Snoqualmie Pass tires!
I've been debating a 650B bike--they feel made for our area. Do you have a
new frameset, or did you convert an old bike to 650B?

Yeah, when I originally bought the Hunq, I had much better access to the
rail trails of Northwestern NJ and Westchester County. I moved closer to
NYC after I purchased the bike. Love it, but maybe not the best choice for
NYC.

Wouldn't be the best choice? The Hunq tilts more towards dirt/trail use (and

Hi John,
I don't know your bike but do know your roads -- and ride them daily. I'm

I have the Snoqualmie pass tires on my Appaloosa. Been riding them for a while
now and they still measure 41mm on rims as narrow as velocity twin hollows and
as wide as the stock wheels that came with the complete Appaloosa. They ride
really nice though and feel bigger than they are when riding
How wide did the Snoqs measure?..

I agree; I love Thunder Burts. I have a set of 26 x 2.1" Liteskins on my
'88 Schwinn KOM.
The TBs feel about as fast as my Schwalbe Super Moto tires, which are about
95% as fast as the best supple tires I've ridden (Pari-Moto, GB Cerf,
Lierre, Compass Stampede Pass).
What makes the Thunder Burts
I have the Compass Barlow Pass tires on my 54cm Hunq, and albatross bars.
I love 'em!

Adam: can you tell us how wide the SPs actually measured? And, how wide the
rims are?
Thanks.

I was riding 50mm Marathon Supremes for the summer but put on some Schwalbe
Thunderburts (29 x2.1) for the Fall and I am rather amazed at how efficient
they feel on the roadthey almost feel better than the Supremes?!

i had the snoqualmie pass 44s on my hunq but they were way smaller than i
expected so i took them off instantly and went back to 55 big bens. it just
felt inappropriate to have such a small tire on there, and i have a true
road bike so i am not relegated to making a dirt touring bike into one.
lately, ive not had time to ride on anything but pavement im also
running schwalbe 50's. marathon supreme right now.

I run Rat Trap Pass tires on my 26" hunq, alternating between that and some

Go for the Schealbe Big Ones or, at the very least, Compass 700 x 44.

My 48cm Hunqapillar has 26" tires. Most of my miles are commuting miles
(Boston-area streets). I have Rat Trap Pass on it now-- fast tires on and
off road. I probably run them with more pressure than Compass would
recommend, but I've gotten more than a few pinch flats after hitting deep
pothole
My mileage commuting is on pavement, but touring and recreational is split
between
Pavement, gravel and trails. I really like the 50 mm Big Ben's for everything.
I only use the Hunq part of the time for commuting because it's one of two
bikes I have with dyno lights.

Most of the miles I put on my Hunq are on pavement. I'm using Schwalbe
Little Big Bens. They are 700x38 - I like 'em, they're okay on the pavement
but work fine on gravel roads. The bike feels lively and I have plenty of
room for fenders.

I have used Vittoria Hypers 40/38 on my Bomba , which I ride mostly on
pavement, but I don't hesitate to ride it anywhere when I feel like it
regardless of the tire. That'd be the minimum tire I'd ride with it, the
Hypers also don't have alot of volume for their width. I've not ridden

Most of my riding is on pavement; depending on my commute, about four miles
may also be on the packed clay and gravel of the local tow path. I started
out with 50mm Schwalbs on my Hunqapillar; the ride was great, the gravel
felt like pavement, the pavement felt like silk, etc. Unfortuna
