My understanding of installing stuff into /usr/local/bin is that it will take precedence over stuff that is installed from a package manager into /usr/bin as it is first in $path. If the system finds it first in /usr/local/bin it will use it, if not it will look for it in /usr/bin. Shelagh On 2
