to the way PAM works neither LightDM or the greeter know for sure the
context of the prompts that PAM sends. So they don't know they're being
asked for a username or something else in which whitespace might be

Also, what version of LightDM? This might have occurred with 1.11.8
which was used at the time the ISO was built. It had an issue where some
video hardware wasn't being detected as usable including in VMs. It has
since been replaced with 1.11.9 which should start fine.

Laney suggested setting XDG_RUNTIME_DIR in debian/rules as other
packages do that (e.g. glib2.0). That fixes the problem for me. Still no
idea why it breaks for me and not others, but we definitely should set
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR as the Wayland backend requires it and tests might use

like SIGUSR1 is probably the traditional method

[gtk-mir-backend]
There seems to be an issue with the GTK+ Mir surface getting focus.
When running through mir_demo_server_shell no mouse up/down events are
received (as shown using GDK_MIR_LOG_EVENTS). However, if you drag the
window using alt+mouse then release the events work after that. I can
then run the demo
Aha, this is the issue. Below is an event from running inside Unity 8.
We are getting up and down events but they don't have a button state
(they appear to be finger events). So we're not going to generate a GDK
event for this. Unity 8 must have switched from generating mouse events
to finger
