This was actually a hardware problem.
Was slow with HP GWA4166b, good speed with Pioneer DVR-111DSV
I work for an organisation that refurbishes usable computers, so all hardware
is well used, donated systems.
The HP may be at the end of its life or just not compatble with the rest of the
system.

For each upgrade system error occurs during the kernel install.
Subsequently it occures once on the first reboot after the kernel
update. Afterward, the video driver works fine and no complaints from
the kernel.

Sorry for the confusion. Most of the 0.7.0 series got merged into 0.6.0
at a late stage. I've verified everything in 0.6.0 is also fixed in
0.7.0. So although the branched fixes in 0.7.0 have not been "released"
yet, the equivalent fixes in 0.6.0 have. No need to mention them in 0.7
any more.
