And spoke too soon, I guess. Tried printing and it would never finish processing and get to the printer. CUPS job state says:
processing since Thu 14 Aug 2014 08:52:20 PM CDT "Rendering completed" ...but doesn't go any further after several minutes. lpinfo -v does display: direct gutenprint52+usb://Canon/SELPHY+CP400?serial=NONE_UNKNOWN&backend=canonselphy This was the printer I had left set up after performing your Step 2 of renaming without the + sign. So, I tried deleting that printer, reversing the renaming to again include the plus sign and readding it through cups. Same result, no print after 15 minutes. So, just for kicks, I restarted the computer and tried printing again.
