That software might work. Unfortunately, I would need version 2.1 or
similar, as the most recent version (3) requires OS X, and I only have
9.1. Does anybody have a copy of Disk Warrior 2.1 handy?

I'm late to the thread, but have you tried Disk Warrior? Some versions have
a recover mode. If you try to re-build the directory and the button for
re-place is grayed out, hit the preview button and it will take you into a
mode that gives you a chance to save rescued items, but you'll have to
have a disk attached to save them to.

I just bought DW a month ago, and I recovered, even tho I only had 8.6
installed, since the disc with 9.2 was the one that crashed.

I think it was 3 (the disk doesn't say which version)

the DW CD has the earlier version on it...it shows up when the CD is
inserted.

Re: [1st] Hard Disk Problem

2005-08-17 Thread NODEraser
Due to the lack of response, I am beginning to believe that the data
on the hard disk is unrecoverable. So, I think I will reinitialize
soon. However, can anyone help me recover some of the software that I
had on the drive? There was a lot of stuff that I will probably never
be able to find again, but the biggest thing I'd like back is Office
(I think I had version 5.2.1 or something like that). I had all the
disk images on the hard drive, and was going to make pysical copies
when the catastrope occurred.

I will be more careful with older software from now on, and will make
backup copies of important software.

This message was sent using a PowerBook 520 (not my PowerMac 6100/66,
for obvious reasons).

[1st] Hard Disk Problem

2005-08-11 Thread NODEraser
I have a PowerMac 6100/66 with a G3/266 upgrade and OS 9.1, that I use
as a master fileserver and research machine while I'm working on my
other, older Macs. I have a couple hundred megabytes of software on
there that I'd rather not loose (a lot of software when we're talking
system 6 and 7). Recently, being the complete idiot I am, I ran an
older version of Norton utilities on the harddrive and it fixed it
for me. Unfortunately, this older version of Norton thinks HFS+ is an
error that needs to be fixed. And, it did just that.

Now, I have to boot from the CD or a floppy, and I get an error -127
when I try and mount my hard disk using Drive Setup. Is there a way I
can at least get to my files to copy them safely somewhere else before
having to re-initialize? It would not be the end of the world if I
could not recover those files, but it would absolutely suck because
the original drives/disks that some of the software came on are gone
or broken.

Any help in recovering these files would be appreciated. I have
another Mac (albeit an SE/30) with the same size hard drive that I can
transfer everything via Network to, but I need to be able to access
the files on the PowerMac first.

Re: [1st] Hard Disk Problem

2005-08-11 Thread Bob Alcorn

Dear Noderaser,
If you boot from the OS9.1 cd that becomes your startup hard drive. You
will see the OS9.1 as your new system. The hard drive icon will be on
the desktop also. Click on the icon to open it. It will have the
applications, documents, and other folders on it. There is a previous
system folder with all the control panels and preferences etc. from
the previous setup in there also.
You then can take the third party preferences etc. from the previous
system folder and transfer them to the new system folder so you can
use your third party apps etc. I hope this works for you.
I am not responsible for any lose of data. Take this advice at your own
risk, although it works for me.

Re: [1st] Hard Disk Problem

Dear Noderaser,
Please re-read this.

If you boot from the OS9.1 cd then INSTALL it. After you install it
and restart it click on the hard drive icon to open the hard drive.
There are your old folders and a NEW system folder.
Note: There is a previous system folder with the old finder and all
the old control panels and preferences etc. (from the previous
installation). In this folder are your third party apps etc. Transfer
them to the new system folder in the appropriate places.I hope this
works for you. Again, do this at your own risk.

Good Luck.

You then can take the third party preferences etc. from the previous
system folder and transfer them to the new system folder so you can
use your third party apps etc. I hope this works for you.
I am not responsible for any lose of data. Take this advice at your
