[313] herbert at the movies

2002-05-27 Thread Matthew KANE
Well, yesterday afternoon, I decided to see some questionable films.

The first was Irreversible, the one that freaked out everyone at Cannes because
of a 9-minute long horrifying rape scene. That is not what this post is about.

The other was called Le Defi (the challenge). It's about Paris breakdancers,
supposedly, but there's not enough of a plot to really bother with. Mostly
dancing. The only reason I went to see it was the soundtrack by Herbert.

I wasn't expecting him to get screen time, though. He plays a short set with the
help of a can of Coca-Cola Light.

[313] F**k the Jubilee Party - NW England

2002-05-27 Thread alex . bond
Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Dear All,

As you know, it's the Queen's jubilee this weekend. We have taken this as
an excuse to organise a party outdoors, at a local 'beauty' spot (infact
it's right next to a massive lake in the middle of nowhere). It's all above
board, and on private land so the police can't stop us (they did try last
year, but thought it better to just go away!) It's 30 mins drive from
Manchester, 30 mins from Liverpool.

Between about 30 of us, we have got a few quid together and hired a 40 foot
marquee to host the sound system, so even if it rains the party won't be
stopping.

You are ALL invited! Seriously, anyone and their friends are welcome.
Everyone is taking a small tent as the party starts Saturday and goes
through till Sunday night, so you'll need somewhere to put your stuff or
get your heads down for a couple of hours. There'll also be a load of us
watching the England v Sweden game in the morning (we've not decided what
to do about this yet but will be sorting it), so you've no reason to miss
that either.

If you'd like to come, send me a mail off list and I'll organise a map.
It's pretty much a case of having to drive (you can of course leave your
car, get your head down in a tent and drive home in the morning when you're
sober) although there is a train station within a couple of miles.

Oh yeah - and it's free! (although there will be a bucket flying around for
donations towards the cost of the marquee).

Details;
F**k the Jubilee
Saturday 1st June

Start 6pm ish on Saturday
Finish Sunday night
DJ's from Manchester
Music - House/Detroit Techno/Funk/Soul/Jazz/Disco/Dub/Electronic mad tackle
Location - Secret, mail me for info.

Barbecue (Some food available, Bring some with you though)
Bar (again bring your own drinks, but there's a bit of beer, wine etc
available at cost prices)
Fire etc
Large sound system
Nice outdoor location 'in the country'

Thanks, apologies to those who this doesn't apply to.

Alex.

P.S. What was the Trackmode party in Detroit like anyone?

[313] Stewart Walker/Planet E party

2002-05-27 Thread Kent williams
Stewart played a brilliant set. My review is about the same as the last
time I saw him: He goes out of his way to try and rock a crowd, and the
crispness of his beats almost makes up for the overmodulated hard techno
muck from the rest of the festival.

Planet E Party was beautiful. I was just about first through the door, and
immediately Rob Theakston had me in bliss with his ambient/downtempo/chill
techno set. Ibex in the lounge was very nice too. Todd Sines played a great
set, with a female vocalist. I especially liked the tracks where he managed
to get funk out of really twisted digital edits. At first it sounds a bit
like his computer is going crazy but then the beat comes back in and it all
makes sense ...

Mike Clark was nothing short of brilliant -- EXTREME funky techno.
Radioboy/Herbert was totally mad, destroying products from corporate Icons
like McDonalds, Gap, and Starbuck. I think he was using the Roland VP sampler,
live to sample in his acts of mayhem. His hyperactive, lurching stage presence
was riveting to watch. And Richie Hawtin has nothing on him for volume. I had
foam plugs in and it was still loud. I thought something was falling from the
ceiling and hitting my forhead, but it was the sound from the PA hitting my
skin.

Carl Craig was, well, Carl Craig, moving back and forth from funky/stiff
dance floor stuff to soulful jazzy tech-house, to Detroit classics. The
sound went out a fair bit during his set, but he had people in the palm of
his hand.

Shake was Shake, which is to say a just about perfect musicians' DJ. He
was all over the place genre-wise but always with an ear for heartbreakingly
beautiful melody. There's a sense in which I could watch Shake play for
3 days and be just as happy as I ever was with the festival, because he
never gets samey, and just when you thought a track was the coolest ever, he
sneaks in a new one that's both suprising and perfectly appropriate.

Needless to say it was old home week among the punters as well. Loads of
the 313 faithful were there. And it was perfect-party full -- full but not
so full to make moving around difficult. The M_NUS party around the corner
was a useful contrast, with hundreds and hundreds of people waiting to
get in. That was more of a ravey crowd. I'd love to see one of Richie's
events in Detroit but I just can't face being pummeled repeatedly for hours
on end.
Much love to the Planet E crew for pulling this one off.

Re: [313] re[313] Stewart Walker...

2002-05-27 Thread Fred Heutte
I wasn't really sure about the crowd's reaction during Stewart's
set, which was just thoroughly *tight*.

At the end, they were cheering and yelling and he took a big bow :)

Adam X played about like the last time I saw him in 1993, although
it doesn't seem as fast now!

I also like Art Payne and Keith Martin, Keith Kemp and the little
bit I saw from Gary Martin. Missed Brian Gillespie's underground
stage set because they limited him to strictly one hour (noon-1,
what's with THAT?!) but Greg Earle and I caught his promo thing
for DJ Supply in the display room at 6. He was upset about not
being used to a new mixer but he had the room jumpin' with straight-
up Detroit bass. Mm :)

Not a good afterparty night for me, unfortunately. Less said the
better. We all had a great time at the UR party Saturday night
though. The sound in Johansen Gallery was finally what it had
the potential to be, and Buzz Goree and Rolando both mashed it up.
My friend Tamara Palmer whom some of you know said, I danced
going in, I was still dancing going out the door. How often do
you see *that*!

[313] All Access 2 / Control

2002-05-27 Thread Ian
On 5/27/02 12:56 PM, Kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Agreed. As Radioboy, Herbert may have the most mercurial stage prescence
I've seen. The delight you feel is the unbridled joy of destroying those
Icons. To be honest, I disliked the Radioboy material as downloads, but the
tracks really come to life when you see the performance, and realize how
subject to chance the sounds are.

And Richie Hawtin has nothing on him for
volume. I had foam plugs in and it was still loud. I thought something was
falling from the ceiling and hitting my forhead, but it was the sound from the

I'm not too sure about this. Linda and I managed to score double-sided
passes and crept off to watch Rich from his stage for an hour or so. I
should have taken you up on the plugs, Kent.

Control was the archetypal Richie Hawtin experience. The smoke and blue
strobes remove your visual sense, the volume effectively renders your ears
useless. All you're left with is the intensity of the bass, which regulates
your breathing, and Richie deciding when you inhale and exhale. This forced
surrender was fun for me once, but it left me a little cold last night.
There literally was no tonal content, and very little variation in the
beats. From my perspective, no real groove or funk.

Shake was Shake, which is to say a just about perfect musicians' DJ. He

I knew I missed something while I was next door. Dammit! Fortunately, when
we left at about 6am, we decided to pop back in to see how Carl was wrapping
things up. Stevie Wonder's Another Star was the perfect antidote for my
mood, and a great melody to have ringing around in your head as the morning
sun illuminates the sewer steam on the drive home through Detroit.
