(313) Kit Clayton / Sue Costible art performance
I thought some people on this list might be interested in this unique Kit Clayton / Sue Costible multimedia performance setup. It's part of a new media festival of video performances, installations and screenings. www.transcinema.com Interruption Interruption explores the relationship between the concrete world of the everyday and the fantasies we project upon it. During the performance, the artists are laying down, each with a video camera and a microphone suspended close to their faces. The microphones are connected to a custom built audio/video processing system which takes direction from the sounds heard by the microphones and the images seen by the cameras. The theme of interruption is explored in the interaction between the live, narrative audio/video stream and a concurrent, pre-recorded audio/video stream. What is projected on the screen depends upon the artists actions and vocal expressions. _,.., /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ jamie /| /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/,-' hurlbut / / /_/_/_/_/_/_/,-'/ / /_/_/_/_/_/_,:../ / |,' hurlbotics.com |/ '

Re: (313) laura gavoor et al
I guess some of my writer/promotions background makes folks think that I'll always have something to say. And then there's the line of thinking that says, if it's already been said, if you have nothing new to contribute, keep your mouth shut. The other week I was at James Stinson's funeral (Drexciya) and now this. So I'm shell shocked. All of you have spoken well to her memory and I really don't think I have anything I can add that will do any more to communicate what a truly inspirational woman she was, faults and all. In fact, her faults were some of the things that endured me to her. Laura would say things that others might be thinking, but wouldn't. She once said something to me about a situation where she, in her words, put my foot in my mouth. I told her, Naw, everyone else was thinking it, you were just the only one who wasn't scared to open your mouth and be honest about how you felt. She was human. She was openly human. You didn't spend a lot of time trying to figure out, What does she mean? Good or bad, she'd let you know. So I came to respect this woman, long before I got to know her well enough to say that I truly loved her as a person. I called her, not too long ago, because I wanted to know how she was doing, what was going on with her. I'm thinking, it's so cool to be talking to this woman, not for business (though we HAD to talk about the business), but honestly, for the pleasure of it. And she thanked me. And I don't know how other folks interacted with her, but as much as I was inspired by her, she made me feel like I was doing something for her just by calling and BSing on the phone. And (and I know this will sound silly), that was my dance partner (yeah, I know, I'm not alone). I could count on her to not stand on the wall, no question. I am going to miss her on so many levels... _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

So either they put the wrong original track on the remix EP, or they called the remixes the wrong name, or Transmat got thier labels the wrong way round. If this bloke comes to a town near you anytime soon, make sure you know what you're in for before you attend. Someone whooped when he finished, many faces turned to where it came from carrying looks which said WHY?!?!?!? (to be fair the whooper might have just been relieved it was over). Tennis probably were the standout, playing sub-Pole/Chain Reaction-esque (but much slower) dub soundscapes and really experimenting with echo. But -(and this applies to all the acts) watching 2 ugly blokes staring intently at the screen of a laptop does not an engaging spectacle make. I have dug some Vladislav Delay tracks a lot in the past and I always respect experimentation. But tell me someone, what is the value of random squelches and other inharmonious noises strung together with vocal snippets which sound like the voices you might hear if you had the misfortune to listen inside the head of a schizophrenic? There were no beats. This in itself need not be a reason for music to be boring or even undanceable - but this was *not* The Detroit Escalator Company - nor even the Vladislav Delay which you'll hear on most of his LPs and a few Chain Reaction titles. This was sheer random noise obfuscation and maybe for that reason it was a brave thing to do. I mean maybe he was baring his soul. But to me he didn't really use 0.5% of the talents which he has in doing that. Strangely, the London (Guardian) Guide billed it in the clubs section! I noted many looking at their watches. Luckily it the whole thing was only about 2 and bit hours long. Tate, spend your

Re: (313) Vladisalv Delay
I'd agree with the comments about the soundsystem, it was v.v.good. Yet i found that Delay's soundscape had no coherence or structure to it . Sound collages have been done time and time before, and IMHO there was nothing different or new about this. There seemed to be no method visible (who knows what he was doing on his laptops) and whilst one can be forced into just listening, I'm sure people will appreciate that one must muster one's critical faculties to give an appraisal, rather than just letting it wash over them. - Original Message - From: Placid [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 6:33 PM Subject: Re: (313) Vladisalv Delay In response to the vladislav delay criticism... RE: (313) Vladisalv Delay
Placid, Response to (some of) your friend's points - it wd have been nice had they contributed them themselves! We don't bite here! this was a concert/performance, and was billed as such, so why should we expect to be excited by what's on the stage? it's the sound that should be concentrated upon, not the two ugly blokes making it. - In some places (as I noted) it was in fact billed in the club section of publications: I mentioned the London Guide, in the Guardian Newspaper. But nevertheless, a concert is was what I was expecting and a concert I can get with. On the other hand this was an audience watching intense men working on their pcs. Is this a new frontier in concert performance? I doubt it. During the performance, I suggested to my friend that it would have been just as feasible and perhaps more enjoyable to experience the performance at another venue, with the music streamed via ISDN or something. Being at that place during the 'show' seemed pretty pointless to me. The exhortation by the woman who introduced the event, implying that visits to the lavatory would be frowned upon didn't help. However - I was with friends who saw Stockhausen perform with a similar format using not much (I think) not much more than himself and a laptop. In that case, the audience were encouraged to shut eyes or concentrate on a small dot of projected light, whilst the auditorium was darkened - which I think would make sense. So yes, under some circumstances, I'd have to concede that minimal visual performance would be acceptable to me ... leading modern art galleries? a largin' it, hands in the air, laser extravaganza? Clearly that's ridiculous - only a fool wd expect such. I don't think that's what you're implying. i enjoyed listening to all three of the acts, for different reasons. ...parlane's piece emerged from the silence and slowly built, layer upon ...it was intimate and affecting. Entirely subjective. Similarly, it's entirely subjective that I found his performance dull due to it's almost literal monotonousness - a composition of near-autistic flatness. the accusation of 'randomness' is one i've come across before, and which, quite frankly, i find boring and lazy. Sorry if my dislike of VDelay bores you! However, it's again my personal opinion. You saw order or some pattern which pleased you, I didn't see any meaningful pattern, such as there was displeased me. I can't accept the accusation of laziness: I engaged my critical and evalutive faculties for over two hours in order to understand what all the musicians were attempting to do, as I did when I made a very long and I hope at least reasonably thought through post of my own thoughts to this list - as I am doing now! I cannot see why because I don't agree with you that makes me lazy - maybe that's your view because of lazy thinking! it was delay himself who was taking the decisions as to when and how he chose to play and layer the sounds he produced. there must be intention in theses actions, thus rendering the random accusation useless. it may have been difficult to listen to but by no means impossible. First part does not disprove the idea that he was making it up as he goes along - 'random'. Second part, again you enjoyed it, I didn't. Maybe 'random' is good. In that particular instance for me, it didn't work. I hated it. (313) London - Slices #2
Something a little different for all you London based 313'ers. www.bleep43.com presents SLICES #2 - From Kingston to Berlin Sat 19th October 2002 - Rick Hopkins (Haywire/Outlet) Hazell (Outlet) Lee Berwick (Digidub) Dub-Sounds * *live 8 - 2 am £2 www.publiclife.org 82a Commercial St outside Spitalfields Church London 5 mins walk from Liverpool St *** First of all, many thanks to those who turned up to the 1st Slices party which was headlined by the truly fantastic Rob Euroh, who showed why he is a major talent on the ones and twos. Electro promoters, book this man because he's hot! We are pleased to announce details of the 2nd part of this 4 part series of events, which will concentrate on sounds from the dub spectrum. *** Rick Hopkins/Hazell The Outlet collective have been putting on underground parties in and around the capital for a number of years, and Slices is happy to welcome 2 more of their crew to the decks. Rick Hopkins, who also DJs for Haywire, has been spinning since the mid-nineties where he was a resident at Andy Weatherall's legendary Blood Sugar night. Although he is perhaps more renowned for his driving electro sets, Rick has a consumate repertoire, and alongside the mighty Hazell, whose sets are known for their tangential content, expect to hear some seriously dubby textures and grooves from Pole to the likes of Basic Channel and beyond. --- Lee Berwick An integral part of the LS Diezel soundsystem in the early nineties, Lee's knowledge of dub reggae is second to none. His own Digidub project has mutated from a debut LP in 1993 to being appointed by the Swedish goverment in 1998 to work with avant-garde Butoh dancer Su-En on a project called Scrap Bodies, the end result being a CD recorded entirely in a Swedish scrapyard. More recently Lee worked on an aural project derived from sounds taken directly from the River Thames, which was later shown museums around the capital. He has remixed work for the likes of Funki Porcini and Dreadzone, and has toured/DJ'ed extensively over the whole world. --- Dub-Sounds After Plant43's praised debut performance last month, we are happy to welcome yet another debutant, this time Jamie Croyden's Dub-Sounds project. Jamie's main influences are drawn from the traditional dub masters like Perry, Pablo and Tubby, yet he maintains a healthy respect for the likes of Moritz Ernestus. --- www.digidub.demon.co.uk www.bleep43.com http://www.overloadmedia.co.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2171

Ravinder Mann: ah just waiting to go home on a friday so surfed the web a bit and found this bootleg... i wanna dance with some numbers.. http://overstated.net/archives/2002_09.asp#000211 that's the first Girls on Top 7. came out over a year ago i think. the b-side has a rather fetching combination of TLC No Scrubs over the top of Human League Being Boiled. the second Girls on Top 7 features Adina Howard Freak Like Me over Gary Numan Cars (later re-recorded by Richard X aka Girls on Top using teenage pop temptresses Sugababes to do the vocals) and some Missy track on the other side i think. anyways... Detroit... i didn't know Laura at all, aside from her posts to the list, but i still found myself playing KDJ's In Loving Memory last thing before i went to sleep the last 2 nights. strange. anyone got any thoughts on that new Carl Craig remix of Floppy Sounds on Wave? sounds pretty good to me! deep brooding C2 goodness! have a good weekend all rob _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

I loved the Human League/TLC but thought the Whitney/Kraftwerk splice was a bit lame, but only cos I hate Whitney. Some of these bootlegs are terrible but occasionally the juxtaposition works. Not 313 related but the Christina Aguilera/Strokes bootleg is another one that seems to work and some of those Missy bootlegs are cool too. -Original Message- From: Klaas-Jan Jongsma [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 3:04 PM To: Odeluga, Ken; Toby Frith; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org Subject: RE: (313) Whitney V Krafwerk bootleg At 15:53 +0100 04-10-2002, Odeluga, Ken wrote: That is beyond terrible. Oh no! I should have started with something better than that! For the record I absolutely love everything I have ever heard on UR, am a big fan of Axis/Purposemaker and everything Carl Craig has ever touched. Early Plus8/Transmat/KMS - basically all the stuff you guys love. Why the hell do you think I have subscribed to this list? I even like Motown and The White Stripes! You can keep Eminem though. ;-) The only thing I don't like is some people's precious and deferential attitudes toward the music and the players, but I guess some people don't like my attitude either. ...I absolutely love everything I have ever heard on UR Even the new live version of 'Hi-Tech Jazz'? I never thought I'd say this about a UR record but I think it's verging on awful... the original is one of my favourite, life-changing, era-defining records (along with the rest of UR-025) but this new version makes me cringe... Which reminds me - I saw a trailer for a new documentary movie about the backing band for most of the Motown records. (313) Laura Gavoor
I never met Laura Gavoor. I wish I had. I always enjoyed her posts, and remember thinking clearly while reading one of them Wow, this girl kicks ass. (This is high praise coming from me (-: ) It says she was 44 years old. I turn 44 in 17 days. So this hits pretty close to home. It's ironic that this happened just after I returned from a week in Paris. I feel most alive when I'm away on travel. One thing you find in your 40's (heck, probably 30's for some folks) is that life can become incredibly rote - you suddenly discover yourself plowing the same furrough, going through the same motions, finding things monotonous. Travelling - be it TechnoTourist travel or otherwise - breaks me out of that, and makes me come alive again. To be alive and to be able to experience things like the overwhelming immensity of The Louvre or the opulence of Versailles is something I am very, very grateful to be able to experience. I don't have much else to say, and I hope to God this doesn't come out all Father Knows Best-y: Coming alive while on travel, combined with what just happened to Laura and James Stinson, reminds me - as it should remind all of us - how precious our brief little time on this orb is, and how we should live every day as if it's our last. Because it just might well be. And dance like no one's watching. Rest in peace, Laura. - Greg

Girls on Top it is. It has been out for quite some time. Very nice, actually sounds made for each other, great vision. he otherside is TLC Scrubs and and somethig else but cannot remember. I hardly play that one due to the Whitneywerk one being so good. By the way, did I miss the Kraftwerk write-ups from Paris. I think it was the fact that he allegedly threw the named record off when he came on after Clarke at Creamfields, Liverpool 2001. Is that an awful thing to do to an awful tune? scott - Original Message - From: marc christensen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 7:27 PM Subject: Re: (313) Whitney V Krafwerk bootleg At 8:13 PM +0200 10/4/02, Maarten Baute wrote: Isn´t Richie Hawtin a player hater (at times)? (313) idm retrospect
With the addition of the laptop in a live performance gig, it is very easy for a musician to really just stick with that. Software such as MAX/MSP, Ableton Live, Reaktor, Pro-Tools...there's enough to occupy one's time and energy strictly from the keyboard. My problem is when a musician hits Play on his pro-tools sequence and does some postmodern italo-disco dance for pretty much him/her self with absolutely no consideration for the audience. What's the point of performing live if you're not going to work it a little? And don't get me wrong, laptoppers work it hardcore. take, kid606, BMG, Bill Van Loo. These guys beat out some phat beats and crazy soundscapes right behind their laptops. The key here is live music, folks, and when a musician is smiling and getting into it and obviously tweaking enough virtual knobs to get a crowd moving-either physically or mentally-they are doing a fine job. The last few shows at the Detroit Art Space have both impressed and disappointed me in this sense. I'm not going to mention Telefon Tel Aviv because they use guitars and their live presence is already memorable without ever hearing a sound. I'm focusing more on Perspects, LegoWeldt (not sure if spelling is correct) and Pole. Perspects: resorted to snooty dancing and hitting play on his machine. he used a controller but that was only slightly cool. There was no improvisation. every track was already queued up perfectly, no mixing between tracks, no eq-ing...i was basically listening to him play cd's. LegoWeldt: Awesome show. Played familiar electro tracks like you've never heard before. The music was so good i didn't even notice if he was using a laptop or tables. What I mean by this is that complex mixing was apparent and the crowd was really into it. It's so easy to fall into that routine of repetitive analog synth patches and traditional 808 drum loops. i was glad i could hear something new. Pole: I felt like I was waiting in line for something to happen. i had to chain smoke to keep things interesting. slow and dubby tracks with no feeling. Pole even shook his head at given intervals. I didn't see that Vladislav Delay show that people have been talking about but I imagine I felt very similar to the fellow who made that first critical post. IDM both intrigues and repulses me almost simultaneously. I really think that innovative mixing is the key to any good electronic music piece-even the experimental type. ::carlos

either you worship his stuff or you think he's terribly overrated. Or you take a completely neutral approach and not really worship - or think he's not all that - I can take or leave just about anyone's music/DJing abilities depending on what it sounds like and what I'm interested in hearing at the time. (313) Mayday Mix
I just purchased the Derrick May Mayday Mix - I've heard good things about it. It will take a while to get to me (coming from Brazil to Minnesota) and I was wondering, from those of you who own this, what can I expect to hear? MEK
Re: (313) Mayday Mix
One of the best intro's I've ever heard on a mix CD. I love it. Sets the mood for the rest of the cd :) - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 8:34 PM Subject: (313) Mayday Mix I just purchased the Derrick May Mayday Mix - I've heard good things about it. Re: (313) Mayday Mix
haha... this cd is what got me from the looptechno to the more soulful side... this is the reason why I now sell more than 250 techno records (harder edge) on my website ;) but it was worth it... I always play it in my walk-man when I walk thru the city in the summer... so you might guess what to expect... also in the mix, the underrated convextion release on matrix.. truly brilliant.. the mix is pro-tooled though.. the mix sounds amazing.. but a lot of stuff is done with computer.. wich is not a problem for me.. (313) Laura Gavoor
The last couple of days have been filled with a weird numbness. Last night I was mixing records in my living room and couldn't stop playing Model 500's I Wanna Be There - it pretty much sums up how I've been feeling. I never met Laura in person but was a part of several discussions with her on and off this list. it was always exciting to see her name pop up in my mailbox because I knew something interesting and often quite intense was going on. It's a good thing this list has an archive because I'd hate to lose my only connection to her. I love that quote I think we simply need a VERY good party so's we can ALL shut up and dance! So when is this party going to happen because I really need it (still might not be able to be there...) MEK

One of the best intro's I've ever heard on a mix CD. I love it. Sets the mood for the rest of the cd :) the intro is the end of the B-side from frankie goes to hollywood two tribes (annihilation) mixed with a tyree cooper track and a nick holder disco cut up.. all sounding amazing.

Re: (313) Mayday Mix
Of course, convextion is also in the Juan Atkins Mastermix, which is not the cleanest mix perhaps, but the energy comes through and Track selection is stellar if you ask me. BTW, where can I get the MayDay mix? J. Realized last night that a prized KDJ 12 is missing. Can't remeber the title. Titles imply winter. january something. Can't even remeber the label. it might have been self released, a plainish red center sticker. Any help? I'd like to find it again. J. -- Knecht

Unfortunately, I only have 60 of my records here right now, and this is not one of them. There's a track on it called January. I think the other you're thinking of is Winter's Breeze. It's by KDJ. My first record by KDJ/Moodymann, probably my favorite, and definitely my most-played. As essential as they come.
