(313) Double Dutch Wild Kingdom

2009-05-08 Thread Richard Hester
This weekend at midnight Saturday/12AM Sunday (GMT- 8hrs), the Wild
Kingdom features a 3-hour Mayhem radio special called "Double Dutch
Delight", featuring the work of two of Utrecht's finest, The Connection
Machine and Maarten van der Vleuten. The Connection Machine's first
12", "Bitflower", was released on Carl Craig's Planet E imprint in
1994, and is a perfect example of dreamy IDM/313 hybrid techno. Their
total released catalog is small - (4) 12"s and a CD, but the quality is
exquisite. Maarten van derVleuten has been a mover and shaker in the
Dutch techno/house scene since early days, and he has a sprawling
catalog of releases under many names, and on many labels - Djax, Prime,
R&S, TZ, Apollo, Outrage, Signum, See Saw, ESP, and U-trax, to name a
few. In contrast to the Connection Machine, the special will offer just
a taster of Maarten's output (no real surprise, given that the special
is only 3 hours long). Those wishing to do remedial research on van der
Vleuten can check out discogs.com for more information.

Last week's Wild Kingdom was preempted by a 24 hour KFJC Mayhem special
called "Doing It to Death", a celebration of the life and times of James
Brown. The playlist is located at
http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=32645 . Upcoming Mayhem
specials are cataloged at
http://www.kfjc.org/programming/mayhem/index.php . Folks liking
strange/eclectic music will find mind fodder there

"The Wild Kingdom" airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday Morning,
12A-3A (7A-10A GMT). Potential listeners outside the San Francisco Bay
area can find a webcast at http://www.kfjc.org/netcast/index.php .
Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived at kfjc.org.
You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show "Just
Desserts" that was on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived
playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve
1999/2000, so you can see what what I'm up to these days is pretty much
consistent with what I was up to all along.

If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some promotion for an event, contact the KFJC
promotions department at pr...@kfjc.org to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.

My 2 cents...

The show was terrible and trainwrecks throught the evening. The space
is cool tho. And it must have just been an off night, because both
have been on point many times before.

Nah, I was wrong it was this one (I Feel Love vocal over The Chase):
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Premier-Toons-Vol-15/release/499792

A completely different track.

Though I have some track called Midnight Chase maybe with a pink label.  Can't
find it on discogs.  Some sort of bootleg.

You might be thinking of this record:
http://www.discogs.com/DJ-Empire-3-Presents-Giorgio-Moroder-The-Chase/release/66407

Discogs doesn't have any Chase remix by GU.  Doesn't mean it doesn't
exist but I doubt it.

Re: (313) More music from Detroit....

2009-05-08 Thread jwan allen
Glad you pointed that out, since this particular scenario will
continue to present itself. Since I'm an avid vinyl fetishist if you
may, digital files, for one reason or another just aren't on my radar.
They might as well not exist in my world. Unless I have a prior
relationship with said label (ie. Eveonext, PTR, Motech, etc.) and/or
I'm being sent a mp3 promo / peek of a forthcoming vinyl release. I'll
probably forget about the tune being mentioned as soon as I open up a
new window or navigate to another page, after forwarding the info to
the digital jocks in my inner circle. So in the aforementioned example
of the k.hand tunes, they were on beatport in February, but RELEASED
this week.

I know that's splitting hairs for most, but this is just how I
approach it. Perhaps I'm missing out on the next "Strings of Life",
but until proven wrong I highly doubt it.

I know Andrew and others have mentioned the latest Planet E from Reade
Truth (Sonic Groove), but if you haven't already done so, you must get
this record. Refreshing, is the adjective that first comes to mind
each and every time I drop these tunes on the platter. I can't say
I've flipped over anything he has done previously on his Path Imprint,
but if this release is a sign of things to come, I'll be first in line
to snag a copy!

jw

ps. (full disclosure, I run a record label w/ my mates and have a
vested interest in the continuation of the vinyl format, we do release
digital files. Personally I just don't get the same buzz from that as
I do from vinyl.)

also I see there's an R&S repress of the 69 classic "lite music" so
those of you that missed out the first couple of times around, please
go out and purchase. It will be nice to hear someone else play these
tunes, besides people I know personally.:)

Eh? When did that happen to "broken beat"? For the last five years
it's sounded more and more like straight up house/jazz music.

I'd love to hear the experimental introduced back in. Are you thinking
of the dubstep sound maybe?

RE: (313) who is going to the festival??? Re: (313) festival roll call? anybody making t-shirts?

2009-05-08 Thread Robert Taylor
Grace Jones is awesome, but she is only one act of many
The crowd has changed at Sonar too, much in the same way that Movement's
seems to have changed.
And Sonar is now more notable for the off-Sonar events than the main
events themselves.

I don't know how to interpret as I have not paid attention to Sonar in
several years. But... Grace Jones?!

Kerohand is a collaboration between K Hand and Kero (who also did
something for Detroit Underground i think?) :-)

Detroit Underground guys- most unlike her other output it has to be
said! That's 4 records in one week.

There's a Norm Talley 10" on 3rd Ear which has a nice (if not entirely
original sounding) old school disco sample track on one side and a
simple but effective house jam on the other.

Those new Delsin 12's are fantastic too- Steve Rachmad remix one is
excellent (not quite Detroit but near enough)
