You're right Pauley, there is a difference, but as I already mentioned it seems that no-one can even offer streaming archived shows here (which is what the BBC offer for all of their music shows). Legally at least. It seems bizarre that the reason for this should be that the industry have no mechanism in place. I'm guessing it's just not profitable enough for them. It makes you wonder though - if none of the record industry organisations here have the power to grant authorisation for streaming audio, do any of them have the power to stop anyone from just going ahead and doing it? And would any one artist or label (especially an independent one) go the effort and expense of doing anything about it? Not that I'm suggesting that RNZ should be the ones to push the envelope, but maybe one of the "forward thinking" independent stations like the b.net or George FM could feel out the limits of the law...

So I did some snooping and the local situation is this (turned out it was an organisation called Phonographic Performances New Zealand who control broadcast licenses here): > PPNZ does not have an existing assignment to blanket licence podcasts at > the present time. Any broadcaster seeking to make available music on > demand is required to seek the permission of the individual copyright > owners concerned. So it's more or less impossible to archive music radio online from here!Madness...

Seems unlikely the >> ISP/website would even be anywhere near being sued for airing the >> tracks. >> >> Odd. > > They won't let you waiver - music is music to mcps/prs etc and they do > close people down for it. This is a New Zealand site remember, so it's controlled by local organisation RIANZ not any American organisation. I'm guessing their fees are equally prohibitive though, because *no-one* offers podcasts or even streaming archived shows here unless they consist purely of talk. I was just being cheeky by calling Radio New Zealand out on it - they're not really a music station, as opposed to something like BBC's Radio 1 or 1Xtra for whom it's obviously worth the effort. Radio New Zealand do on occasion obtain artist waivers. There are some good live recordings of local and visiting artists here: http://www.radionz.co.nz/popular/music/live The music in Mike's interview wasn't all his though, so I guess they couldn't do it in this case. It is kinda crazy too, that they can archive music review features but only with all of the music cut out!! On the upside, my mate who is a proper UR fan also recorded an interview with Mike over the weekend, and it will be posted online once cut to some music tracks (we did a Theo Parrish one which was posted here a couple of years ago). Might take a minute, but I'll let you all know once it's ready...
(313) Mad Mike interview
Mad Mike was in New Zealand with UR's DJ Skurge last week to do some community work with at risk youth, including a lunchtime show for high school kids! Mike was interviewed on state-owned broadcaster Radio New Zealand National by Kim Hill, who's an old school Barbara Walters-kinda journalist. Plenty of good talk on Mojo, car racing etc.: http://podcast.radionz.co.nz/sat/sat-20080906-1010-Playing_Favourites_with_Mad_Mike_Banks-048.mp3 (Note that the handful of musical tracks played during the interview have been cut out because they're too cheap to pay the licensing fee for 'em)

Re: (313) Online ecord stores
> i should mention that turntable lab often has a lot of obscure > represses and hipster disco, and of course they have almost all dfa > releases. I have mentioned here before (but still haven't yet got it out of my system!) that I was shafted by TTL twice in a row so stopped ordering from them and would warn others against doing so. The most recent incident involved them claiming my package was returned to them by the US postal service because it posed a "security threat" (I live in New Zealand, second only to Norway on the Global Peace Index - http://www.visionofhumanity.com/rankings/). TTL decided this was somehow all my fault despite the package having got no further than their local post office, so informed me that if I wanted my records I had to pay for the postage again!! But of course they couldn't guarantee the same wouldn't happen a second time. And they wouldn't refund the postage after I told them to keep the damned things. Interestingly, this all came to pass after I enquired why, according to my account status on their website, the records hadn't been shipped several weeks after I ordered them. They refused to give me any evidence of shipment so I could take it up with the shipping company instead. In fact, they refused to acknowledge any of my emails for a period of months until I gave up and had my credit card take action to reverse the charges. I had a sneaking suspicion the whole time that they had simply forgotten to process my order and were trying to cover up with some bullsh*t story when I asked them about it. In that case a simple apology would have been more suitable. Ironically, I was trying to use a credit note from my previous order which was also problematic. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend those fools. It seems their quality control went out the window when they went "big time" with the second LA warehouse. [/rant] Andy

Just spotted this on the Red Bull Music Academy website: First up on the couch today, is 22-year-old Croydon Grime producer/DJ Chris Reed a/k/a recent Rephlex signing Plasticman (with a 'c' my friends, with a 'c'). Chris talked about the evolution of UK Garage music - which if you're not following it with a magnifying glass you'd be forgiven for being confused about as it seems every second day there is some new sub-sub-sub genre terminology being bandied about. But as Chris puts it, "it's not sub-lo, it's not eski, it's not 8-bar, it's all about grime, man."

(313) Movement line-up
Okay, so I know a bunch of as-yet-unconfirmed Dutchies will be there, but has there been any announcement of the remaining Movement line-up yet? Or is there one coming sometime soon? Andy

(313) Beatdown rmxs
Found this on the Third Ear website... Sounds promising! Anyone heard the tracks??? Andy --- Carl Craig and Amp Fiddler Beatdown Remixes Third Ear follow up the first set of remixes from their Detroit Beatdown Volume One compilaton with the second 12² featuring three more remixes: Carl Craig¹s remix of Theo Parrish¹s epic Falling Up¹, Amp Fiddler, using his Amp Dog Night moniker, and Mike Garrett remix Malik Alston¹s Butterfly¹ Amp gives the track a vocal. Malik adds additonal production¹. While 3-Chair Marcellus Pittman has remixed Darren Albram¹s Loose Piano¹. Release date is late March

(313) Rotating Assembly
> So who has release dates or advance tease-me reviews of his new album, the > Rotator Assembly album or the 12" on Harmony Park (I think)??? How much is > Theo set to take over the world in '04? I have the Rotating Assembly album. It's out in Japan already. At least, I have the first vinyl triple pack... there will be two! Not sure exactly how the tracklisting on this compares to the CD which is also out here on P-Vine, but Theo told me that there would be extra tracks on the vinyl packs. Actually, after a quick Google search I just found tracklistings for both on Cisco Records' site, where I guess anyone who's extra keen might be able to order it from (although I know some JP shops don't export): CD: 1Mess I Made 2Naturally 3Take Me 4The Stomp 5KIngs Dance 6Split Me Open 7The Rust Orgaaanic 8Ascension 9Illumination 10 Orchestra Hall 11 Melt VINYL (PART 1): 1Melt 2Split Me Open 3Mess I Made (instrumental) 4Orchestral Hall 5Take Me 6Naturally 7The Stomp And they have audio samples too: http://www.cisco-records.co.jp/cgi/item_detail.php?qId=46968 There's a nice range of tracks on offer for sure. Different tempos, different feels. About 50/50 vocal and instrumental. Of the vocal tracks I like Genevieve Marantette's track "Split Me Open" best, but the other vocalists are good too ("Take Me" is another favourite) and Theo says Sound Signature full-lengths will be forthcoming from most of them. The instrumental band tracks are cool too. I like the collaboration with Canadian band King Sunshine - "Mess I Made", and "The Stomp" is another dope organic track featuring a guitarist named Dumminie and some of the guys from Jazzhead. And as for "Orchestral Hall"... maybe some of y'all have heard this one already - it's a sick, sick, heavy strings session that's bound to become a classic. Also, I have a one hour interview with Theo in the can, recorded a couple of weeks back in Kyoto. I was gonna wait until I had a chance to edit it up with some tracks and stuff before I posted something here, but the promoters of Theo's upcoming Wellington, New Zealand show have jumped the gun and posted it on their website in it's full rough form so I guess you can go ahead and check it out if you want... http://www.matterhorn.co.nz/Theo.ram Excuse my own sickness on the mic, I came down with an evil flu straight after Theo's Osaka show. His latest tour here was by all accounts huge. The Osaka show was off the hook and I heard he pulled a couple of thousand punters in Tokyo. Of particular interest to some may be the Ugly Edits news towards the end of the interview ;) Oh, and I'm sure you Aussies might get a laugh out of Theo's anticipations for heading down under... I sure did. Andy

Andy --- ++ exclusive mixtape by carl craig (planet e, detroit) starts @ 57:08 ++ carl craig's words to the listeners... hey, the track listing for the special christmas mix i decided to keep as low profile as possible. all dj's need their secrets. i would like to say that there is my beanfield remix (of course), throbbing gristle 'hot on the heels of love (basement jaxx version)', and kenny larkin 'i love the lord' which is an exclusive to this show (as far as i know). there are also tracks from jaylib, cat stevens, buju banton, dick hyman, and flying lizards. it's up to the listeners to decipher who and what each track is. the above titles are played in order. the other artist list are not played in order. i like the concept that music should be searched out with some ignorance like with finding a treasure map to the lost treasure of captain hookmaguck. happy listening. c2 ++ mix ends @ 2:00:48 ++

Re: (313) dkd - Future Rage (was I'll see you Luke Slater mate!)
> Speaking of which I hear Bugz in the Attic have just remixed Amp-Fiddler. > This could be god! :) Benji B played it on his latest show and I didn't think much of it myself... Bugz have been a bit hit or miss for me of late and this one was a miss. They've remixed "I Believe In You" and sped it up considerably which doesn't really work too well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/djs/benjib.shtml I'm more interested in checking Amp's remix of Rima. Has anyone heard that yet? As for the DKD album, I heard that a lot of the album's basically a rinse that uses all first vocal takes and the like. I haven't heard it yet myself though so can't judge. (313) Rusty Waters album

>> some classic tales in there like the realisation >> that he *did* know Moodyman and the stolen J-Dilla zips story > > oh, forgot to ask, what is this story?? > > is it good gossip? come on, I'm bored. The Dilla story? OK, paraphrased cos you asked so nicely: Amp hooks up young Dilla with his first MPC and lessons on how to use it. Also introduces him to Q-Tip, kickstarting a path to beatmaking superstardom. Dilla owes Amp a favour and promises to work on an album if Amp ever makes one. Amp starts to make album but Dilla is too busy to help. And then... Some kid who works in a Detroit barbershop asks Amp to produce a demo. Says he bought 10 zips from a dude for $100 and if Amp produces his demo he can keep 'em. Later when checking out the zips Amp recognises them as Dilla beats. Calls Dilla and says "I've got all your zips! Whassup?". Dilla explains that someone broke into his house and stole some zips and tells Amp "You can have 'em". But wait, there's more! Amp chooses a beat and makes it into the title track of Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly. All along he's thinking "I know this track from somewhere, I've heard it before". A buddy comes by and says, "Yeah I know that track, it's from Q-Tip's Amplified album!". Coincidently, one of Amp's companies is called Amplified. Hear the Dilla/Q-Tip joint: http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/usrm/191/33 4191_1_06.ram?obj=v11016 Hear the Dilla/Amp twist (guitar by John Arnold): http://www.groovedis.com/lp/ampfiddler/waltz/b2.ram Ta da! By the way, a few months ago in Hiroshima I found a second hand 7" by Mr Fiddler of, you guessed it, "Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly" which was released by a French major about a decade ago. Has anyone checked Amp's old Mr Fiddler album from circa 1990/91? It's often available dirt cheap on Ebay. Andy

Now he is Amp Fiddler, and he's still pushing the envelope, taking dance music in new directions thanks to his extensive experience. "Once I got my head together and jumped ship on the party, I realised there was business to be made." As far as your ambitions, "Whatever you say, is what is." Amp Fiddler persisted in making boxes full of demos on 4, 8 and 16 tracks, following his dream until he got the break he needed, and while a legend in his own right by now, he¹s still searching and looking to grow. The new challenge is to forge innovations in electronic music, to develop what he does as a vocalist, and to convince his friends that dance is more than a 'gay house music entity'. Working with artists like Carl Craig and Moodyman was Amp's first introduction to this dance thing, and he found that he had to adapt his approach. "Generally I'd go in there and there'd be keyboards and a drum machine. The track would already be done, it just needed something to fill up the space to get where they wanted in terms of colour. So I had to go on the dancefloor and research to find out what colours I needed. Because otherwise I could add something that would be totally too dark or totally too bright. I had to learn when to stop- musicians like to play too much. I had to think less about playing and more about how to add to the track. To think economically, and rhythmically." Now Amp Fiddler is making his own ground-breaking house music, which he tours with a live band. "In Europe the band would say 'Shall we leave out the down tempo songs', and in the U.S they'd want to play more downtempo songs, but I want to try and expose people to two different worlds. Two different genres at the same time: one that they love, and one that they're learnin' from."
(313) Darshan Jesrani spills the beans
The Red Bull Music Academy is currently in session in South Africa, and they're throwing up content on their website thick and fast... Just found this half hour video interview from a couple of days ago: --- Then it's Metro Area code 718 - the first lecture of the day to be given by Minto's pal and all round funky guy, Darshan Jesrani (see lecture stream here). The music of Metro Area is well known for having warm unquantized elements fused into something soulful yet electronic and spacey. Today Darshan shared some of his own favourites that fit this description, such as Freeez featuring John Rocca. He linked them to a discussion of the way in which early dance music and certain contemporary producers approached their composition. Darshan also had some excellent advice for budding producers on how to crack arrangement. He suggested ways to find the seed idea of music, in order to get yourself out of loop jail. 56K: http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/ramfile/darshan_jesrani_56k.html ISDN: http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/ramfile/darshan_jesrani_isdn.html DSL: http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/ramfile/darshan_jesrani_DSL.html --- It's a nice little insight with Darshan spinning tunes and dropping plenty of knowledge and history. "One of the first things I did with my sampler was I sampled a beat from a U2 record and I taped the key down so it would repeat. And I'd play little sounds over it and I was like 'OK, I'm making music" :) The Academy site is well worth digging around in. There's production tips from Carl Craig and Dego, software demos by John Acquaviva and Ectomorph etc. Andy

Me, I'd rather check Mojo et. al than blow $150 bucks on an exhibition that's gonna be open every day until mid-2004. If I was in Detroit that is... (sigh) The Free Press has also published this techno timeline: (http://www.freep.com/entertainment/music/techno12_20030112.htm) Events in Detroit Techno History 1981: Juan Atkins' Cybotron releases its first single, "Alleys of Your Mind." 1983: Atkins releases "Techno City" and gives the music a name. 1985: DJs Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson link with Atkins to form a network of Detroit record labels. 1987: May records "Strings of Life," regarded by many to be Detroit techno's seminal track. 1988: Virgin Records releases the compilation "Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit" and introduces the music to Europe, where it's wholeheartedly embraced. 1989: Saunderson becomes a British pop star on the back of singles like "Big Fun" and "Good Life." 1991: Carl Craig helps establish Detroit techno's second wave. 1992: Jeff Mills, Mike Banks and Underground Resistance launch an edgy, militant brand of their hometown's sound. 1993: Windsor's Richie Hawtin, recording as Plastikman, releases his first album and heads to superstar success. 1996: Artists such as Stacey Pullen and Sean Deason exploit new technology to craft the third wave of Detroit techno. 2000: The first Detroit Electronic Music Festival hits Hart Plaza, drawing an estimated million people to the riverfront. 2003: "Techno: Detroit's Gift to the World" premieres at the Detroit Historical Museum.
(313) Re: Denver Mcarthy
> May i know if there are any other releases by Denver Mcarthy? I have been > playing the Rise and Shine and am hoping to hear more goodies by him. There's another single on Statra (called "Roughage", with the b-side "Egahguor" being the same track which plays inside out!) and an earlier one on New Zealand label Nurture Recordings (http://www.nurturerecordings.com) under the name Micronism. Denver also has a CD-only album 'Inside A Quiet Mind' under the Micronism alias on NZ label Kog Transmissions (http://www.kog.co.nz), which has some more downtempo stuff on it and is in my opinion the best thing he's ever done... essential listening for everyone on this list. It's been several years now since Denver turned to Hare Krishna, sold all of his gear and headed for South America to spread the good word. Andy PS. If you're after those NZ releases and can't find them where you are, http://www.realgroovy.co.nz might be your best bet - I don't think they list all of their vinyl stock online, but if you email them they're bound to have the Nurture 12" in stock as well as the Kog CD.

(313) The Detroit Experiment
Has this been mentioned on the list already? Sure looks good to me... I found the Philadelphia Experiment album a bit samey, but they've widened the scope for this one and it looks pretty dope. I'm definitely feeling the C2-produced jazz tracks "Space Odyssey' and "Midnight At The Twenty Grand". By the way, I found this on a website called Renaissance Soul, which is new to me but looks pretty interesting for all of y'all who have been talking about Detroit hip-hop lately - www.rensoul.com And finally, while searching for more info on Ropeadope's site I stumbled across this: A Tale Of Two Cities: King Britt and Carl Craig will spin at SHINE in New York City on Wednesday, Nov 20. Together, they are the unbeatable one-two punch of electronic music. If you live in NYC, be there or be salty. More info at http://www.giantstep.net/shows/viewshow.asp?showid=291 Andy --- The Detroit Experiment produced by Carl Craig, Karriem Riggins & Aaron Levinson Ropeadope Records "The Way Me Make Music" 12" single - December 2002 Album - February 2002 Following the success of the critically acclaimed Philadelphia Experiment, Ropeadope's newest music lab is the city of Detroit. With a core band that includes the founding fathers (and mothers) from the Motor City including jazz legends Marcus Belgrave, Regina Carter, Gerri Allen, Bennie Maupin, and more, the roots of the Detroit sound were brought back to the future by DJ/Producer Carl Craig, and UMA member Karriem Riggins (Slum Village) who recorded the band over a period of five days at the legendary White Room Studio in downtown Detroit. The results are spellbinding, mind-blowing and a true testament to the past, present, and future of the music of Detroit. The full-length will be released by Ropeadope in February 2003. Until then, we present to you a little taste: The Karriem Riggins (Slum Village) produced "The Way We Make Music" featuring Michigan's own MC Invincible with some help from the Athletic Mic League. Not neglecting Detroit's contribution to the world of Funk, the Detroit Experiment covers "Church" which the funk-rock-fusion track that will please the most discerning of funk fans. The B-side features the talents of Carl Craig reinterpreting the Marcus Belgrave jazz fun classic titled "Space Odyssey" with some help from Marcus himself. The experiment also captured the essence of real Detroit jazz which can be felt by the flute driven "Midnight at the Twenty Grand". The final track on the B-side is "Space Break" which takes a small section of the drum break from Space Odyssey and leaves it open for producers and DJ's to sample. Look for the full-length debut of the Detroit Experiment in February 2003 and watch for the national tour coming to a city near you. The track listing for the single is as followed: Side A: 1. (313) All Ugly Edits in stock
I thought that some of you might be interested to know that Forced Exposure (http://www.forcedexposure.com) listed Ugly Edits 1, 2 and 3 in their restocks this week. They're selling at US$18 a pop, which is apparently what they've been retailing at all along. On a side note, someone from this list sent me a "warning" about Forced Exposure the day after I had ordered UGE001 from them when it first dropped, but I'd like to mention that it turned up on time, in perfect condition and packaged better than any other mail order shipment I've ever received. I've still not picked up 002 and 003... Are they good? Andy
