terrible, and the contradicted yourself in the next line. you didn't even
put a filler sentance in. I'm not going to argue with you, we all have our
opinions, but there is something wrong with what you said. Elaborate a

Actually I do think Gary Numan was a close relative of the electro
family. Electro is rooted in alot more styles then just hip hop. I think
anyone that ever made an electro record would have to say that Kraftwerk was
a major influence at some point in their life. As well as other styles of
music including Funk, Jazz ect. At the time electro started up hip-hop was
still a movement and had not completely inundated American culture. Although
it may have been an influence (Africa Bambata, BDP, ect) I don't think it
was as much of a factor as the majority of synthpop and what was considered
alternative at the time (Depeche Mode, New Order, EBN-OZN, ect..).
On the subject of Electroclash: I think it is a fresh change from the
worn out pop house trance sound that has been killing the mainstream clubs
for the last 3 years. Felix Da Housecat (Chicago/Detroit) native is I think
the biggest factor of the sound even seeing the light of day. The elements
are very closely related to electro and the older synth sound of Detroit,
Chicago and Europe. I love it and can't get enogh of it right now, although
most of the DJ's down here in Florida hate it, I still shove it down their
throats three nights a week at the clubs. Suggested groups or artists would
be Audio Bullies, FC Kahuna, Felix / Miss Kitten, Tomcraft, Ladytron,
Toktok, Mistress Barbra.
Ladytron is on in my car 24/7, and I feel like I'm driving with the
female version of Gary Numan.

Peace,

OK, here is a somewhat difficult question to get answered...

What records on the Axis label are out of print for sure...these are the
ones that I think are, but not completely sure...

001 HM Tranqualizer EP
003 Inner Sanctum
006? Robert Hood Minimal Nation (this being the hardes to find, I
guess...I can't seem to get my hands on it)

now I am not for sure, but want to know. I just saw Inner Sanctum for sale
on ebay for $20.00, and it sparked my interests...so has the rare record
thread.

as for the UR records that are out of printweren't the dub plates broken

Well, here is what I think. Delete now...

I've heard of quot; The Surgeonquot; from Detroit and
 that he is
a really good house/booty DJ. I am a huuge fan of
quot;Surgeonquot;. Technically he's not even using
 the same
name. Plus, it is a different stlye of music. I
 wouldn't doubt if quot;The Surgeonquot; hadn't even
 ever heard
 of quot;Surgeonquot; from England.

Let's let quot; The Surgeonquot; keep going and make
 it big and
we can let the lawyers do the rest.

To tell you all the truth, though, I was actually
thinking about going to see quot;Surgeonquot; and
 Juan's B-day
party because I thought it was Anthony Child so I could
see how people could get disgruntled about it. I'd be
pissed if I had already purchased my tix.

I'd probably also be pissed if another artist started
using my name. I'm not sure how I would handle it
though. If I found out that there was another artist
already using my name (like there is on mp3.com) then
I'm not sure what I would do. If he was huge (as in
famous) Id probably step down though...

[313] Track ID

2002-09-07 Thread FC3 Richards

there is a track floating around out there with this vocal

music is my life my only ...back u go ...

Now this could be a K. Hand track...not too sure. I don't have any idea
since the question is for a friend.

This track could also be exclusive, maybe I should see if i can get a
recording of it and post a link. But wait til I see if I get permission.

Pls recommend me good dance floor KDJ records (the more up-tempo ones
 without soulful vocals)

 - shades of jae [kdj 21]
 - the thief that stole my sad days [kdj 25]
 - analog live [kdj 28]
 - don't be misled
 - all andres releases

Good suggestions! I was going to say Shades of Jae may be his most uptempo
cut (except for maybe analog live?). Also I would add a couple of his
tracks on peacefrog: Mahogany Brown and also the 12 with Telephone Blue on
it (and whatever the untitled track on the other side is it good too). Then
there's also U Can Dance if U Want 2... all prince cut-ups but pretty
uptempo and some are pretty aggressive, and not disco sounding at all (to
me). And Dem Young Sconies (sp?) on Planet E, which I think someone else
already mentioned. That track mixes well with just about everything:
italo, techno, house, disco, even has that Nitzer Ebb kind of great simple
raw bassline... very versatile track!

OK someone tell what the Moodymann in my wagon 12 sounds like on
Peacefrog??

and while we're on Peacefrog, what are the couple of Ron Trent releases on
the label like? I've fallen hopelessly behind with the Peacefrog lately,
too much to keep up...

Hey all-
I know it's a big and open question to ask but I'm curious to hear who - in
your own opinion- is the most soulful DJ. What I mean is - for you who is
the one whose got it and manages to bring it to your heart every time.
And I'm talking only DJs here.

Now I know that people will want to argue about what is soulful and what
isn't - personally I don't care - and I really don't want to hear any
negative comments please - I'm just interested in the positive. I don't
want to see this go down as a Richie Hawtin doesn't play soul music
thread - if your grandma is the most soulful let me know and I'll respect
your opinion. Give some examples or details if you want.

I'm not looking to stir up controversy - just want to see who makes the
list(s).

Please keep this a fun discussion (argue off list).

the greatest dancer, on m_plant is definately house...disco house even,

Hi

Good point. I tend to think of the music I'm into as
techno (Detroit stuff, Trapez, Perlon, etc) but
techno's kind of a dirty word around these parts
(because it's been subsumed by the hard monotonous
European variety of techno), so when I'm asked what I
play I say deep electronic house (or sometimes minimal
house, but then minimal's kind of a dirty word too).
At the end of the day techno and house are two ends of
a spectrum, and the distinction is sometimes difficult
to make. Do you think techno as originally defined and
produced by Juan Atkins would be considered techno if
released today? I think it'd probably be called deep
house. But I guess most of Rob Hood's stuff is very
clearly techno, the Nighttime World albums excepted.
And I haven't actually heard the Peacefrog album yet.

Cheers

Chris

For people in Sydney: we're starting up a house
night on Thursday August 29, and Inertia
(Australian
distributors) are giving us copies of Robert Hood's
Point Blank album to give away on the night.

I'll post more details later, but essentially it's
a
$6 dollar night at the Hunter Bar in central
Sydney,
featuring Declan Kelly from Melbourne's Honkytonks
and Research Development and Simon Caldwell from
 Sydney's Mad Racket.

 Cheers

OK, so I realize if I am take this DJ vocation seriously I should begin
assembling techno records en masse. So far I've been spare in my use of
already meager funds for purchases of music. However, I've taken a decisive

turn in my way of thinking, choosing to immerse myself in the
culture/artform at every given opportunity. If money need be spent, so be
it, I do so happily.

On that note, what essential Basic Channel releases would you recommend?
And beyond that, what are some of the classics I need to be schooled in to
be considered an informed member of the community? Yes, I know this list
has the potential to be large, but besides feeling my own way through, I'd
like some sagacious guidance.

Thus far my heroes are Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and Derrick
May. I like my techno hard deep and funky but will never forsake the
spiritual element.

Help is much appreciated.

   Rusty

Hell YES!

Merrick is really making a name for himself around these here parts
(Austin, Texas). Chalant nights at Texture are really about the best thing
the club has going for them at this point. I HIGHLY recommend anyone and
everyone take a listen. This guy is great on the decks and has one of the
best attitudes of anyone in the scene down here. Truly an Austin gem.

ssp For anyone in the Austin/Tx area.
Tomorrow night (friday) at Elysium (7th and Red River) I've arranged for
the Addict Records tour to come through and play. This includes Dan
Doormouse, founder of Addict Records and currently on Planet-Mu, Stunt
Rock, John Sin, and Progressive Pete. If you dig the
hardcore/experimental/IDM/jungle stuff come out and check it out. It's
only 5 bucks and admission goes to paying these guy's gas money back to

I have one that is a CD player, and all you have to do is copy the files in
MP3 format onto a CD, with out converting them, and pop it in the CD player
and it will play it. The downside is...I have a CD with 300 MP3's on it and
it won't read that many. Upside...DJ Sets. You can get 10-15 1hour long DJ
sets on one CD! Great for long road trips.

How does a portable player work? Does it play disc or files. I have a but

Sounds like a good thing to have for us d.j. set listeners.

huh??

just kidding...I like it loud. I love the feeling I used to get when I
would walk into a wharehouse party one one side, and on the other side were
the speaker stacks. As you got closer it started to echo less and
less...And by the time you were there it was so goddam loud you couldn't
talk to your best friend who went with. All I had to do was look at him and
think this is going to be great, and he would know what I was thinking, cuz
he was thinking the same thing. And the feeling of the sound wave hitting
the body and vibrating the air around me...incredible...

i'd still rather have sex though ;)

If this is the point then why not stay at home, plug in a pair of headphones
to your hi-fi and crank the volumne up to full - it'll make you just as
deaf.

I honestly see no point in places the play music at rediculas levels. It
becomes too loud to actually hear properly, distorts badly (caused by both
the ear and the equipment not being able to take the levels), hurts and can
cause people serious hearing problems. Whats the attraction?

 talk about missing the point.

my final comment.
best sound ever was at the 10 yrs +8, the remeber fred
played that weird track off of the kinky scientist
(donimation record? i don't own it. wish I did) album
and is sounded like the bass was on it's way to hell, no
distortion, just all out boom. that party and live on
the decks 3 my favorite. 10 yrs +8 was deffently less
hectic.

ps. I have noticed almost every one who has relied to

please cleck the cc and bcc. my mail box is only so big
and when I get so much mail it fills up and I miss lots
of letters. I bounce messages for several list and then
miss bla bla bla you guys know what I mean.

I'll agree that an overloaded system is a bad thing.
And yes, its disgusting how some of
these 'professionals' can't work a
 mixer properly.

But again, the Jak system is meant to have some dirt
to it. And that is
why Rich chooses to use it.

It might have gotten a little overboard at Control2
(guest DJs and lots of
 drinking in the booth).

But at the same time, Rich has also used the Blue
system from Cinnci (?)
and even Burst on occasion when he wanted a cleaner,
tighter sound.

Hello all...

I havn't posted here in a long time, but i seem to have run across a 2X12
test pressing that I need ID'd for me. The label says Acme Vinyl
Corperation which is run out of Toronto, and the matrix number is AVA-001,
and was mastered @ NSC. Both records are in the acid genre, fairly hard and
I like them alot. What I am looking for is who put this out and when were
these records put out. But any info would be handy. I have already scanned
over record labels at Amazing Discographies and Discogs...

thanks ahead of time for the help...

Modern Music in my opinion was way better then YoshitoshiBUT...when i
was shopping in that area of the country for records Deep Dish had just
taken over the store in Georgetown, and had removed everything from the
store, and it was going to take them a while to get back on track. If they
have gottenthe store back to where it should be, I don't know...we will have
to see. Also, it always seemed to be worth it more to shop at 611 in
Philly...I would drive from an hour south of DC to shop there.

hey for anyone who's been to it --

how is modern music in baltimore as far as techno is concerned? good
selection? good range? none of the above? i've been there once or twice
but i can't really remember what the deal was with the recs (i can only
remember what the store looks like).

just wondering if it's worth the trip for a dc'er to roll up there, so if
anyone knows enough to compare it to yoshitoshi, by all means please do so.
i think yoshitoshi is pretty decent if you're looking for techno, but then
again, it's really the only place that's local for me that sells any
techno at all, so i don't really know how good it is compared to other
stores (dc has tons of great record stores, just none of them really sell
techno -- too bad i don't live in detroit, heh heh).

anyway i think going to the store is *so* much cooler than mailorder, so if
anybody knows the scoop on MM, please don't be shy and give me your opinion.

thanks,
champ

They will try to get anything there for you. They have a large selection of
Detroit records including Jeff Mills and Rob Hood. +8 and Probe too. They
have alot of out of print records sitting in the store that no one has
picked up yet. I recently purchased 5 copies of the first Spawn record
(Prob #3) from there via mail order. 4 of the copies were still sealed.
That record has been out of print for years...

[313] RE: (313) DJ ESP on Generator

2002-05-16 Thread FC3 Richards
There was a trance label out of germany who used the same matrix system as
Generator (of Detroit), AO told me that was one of the contributing factors
to shutting down the label, amongst many others.

as for my original question, i think I figured out why the set isn't listed
on the web site. Since Pure Sonic is a T-1000 release only label, the web
page is essentially a T-1000 page. All the records that HE has produced are
on the page...including the DJAX and Tresor stuff. So Woody McBride doesn't
get on the page unless he collaborated with AO...I'm dumb...It is probably
the best release on Generator though...

 first

 unexpected...about
an hour later, standing outside the club, trying to figure out whether
 there

turns out that lady miss keir of dee-lite fame(!), who happened to be

miracle that one turned up close to 2am!

it was great to see such a receptive, vocal crowd and hopefully the people
who stayed enjoyed the show in its entirety. let this be an example of all
the work that still goes on behind a laptop live show...i honestly think
organzing a small orchestra of dyslexic chimpanzees would have been easier

Earth CD, but it only took up a quarter of the page from top to bottom.
Richie Hawting on the other hand has thrown his picture out and made it
recognizable with full page ads, huge posters, and stickers handed out all
over the place. He has made the m_nus symbol almost as recognizable as his
face.

there is no point in arguing it...he just knows how to market himself. he
isn't ge greatest everbut he is damn good.

Peace

NSC is National Sound Corporation, a pressing plant in Detroit that's been
central to the city's music industry for decades. I believe they were
pressing Motown records back in the day, and a lot of the P-Funk material
was pressed there. They noticed the techno explosion, and the main guy
 there
(forgot his name) gave Mad Mike and Jeff Mills the idea for doing locked
grooves - I can't help but notice that a lot of this music you guys are
pressing these days is a bit... repetitive..., he said, tactfully, and
suggested that he cut a record so one beat just loops indefinitely. UR
 were
impressed, and from then on they used NSC to do all those weird
inside-to-out pressings and stuff like that.

Eventually NSC decided to launch an imprint of sorts, and a few records
 came
out under it. The Silicon track on the EP you mentioned below is Heath
Brunner's best, I reckon, and I often play it if I'm spinning booty or
ghetto tech. And I'd say that the Rob Hood track is probably *less*
 minimal
than a lot of his other track - there's some latin percussion in there
besides the standard 909, and a voice that sounds to me like it's saying
 latté!...

 His
latest work is done together with really talented producers such as Acid
 Jezus and Anthony Rother.

I read an interview with him in a dutch magazine 2 years ago where he said
that producers who start to DJ are lame and just a sell-out. He didn't say
anything about a DJ who needs other producers to make records as the DJ.

RE: [313] demf contracting policy

2002-04-15 Thread FC3 Richards
excuse me everyone, but T-1000 is not a mid-tier DJ. He is a high caliber
DJ. I think that everyone here should be happy that this is coming off and
people like PVD and PO and all these other Trance eating mofo's aren't
showing up. This could have turned into total crap. I think the selection
committee has done a good job selecting DJ's. Last year DJ Legal Alien was
there as was a few other local Detroit DJ's that don't spin anywhere other
then Detroit, and I didn't see anyone complaining. And what about Bill
VanLoo??? I don't recall much big talk about him, but after his set at the
underground stage at the first DEMF there was nothing but praise for him.
Low or Mid tier??? I don't think so. (Sorry to use you as an example, but i
had to...keep up the good work)

What I am getting at is everyone needs to quit thier b!tch!ng and go to the
show and enjoy themselves. Is that too much to ask. We all knew that
electronic musics was going to hit it big sometimes, and in the music
industry in general there is always something contraversial going on. And
someone is always going to get pissed. Now I hope all of you hate my guts
for calling ya'll a bunch of little kids, but i felt it had to be dones.

Peace

no sneak, it sucks that Ford's not a sponsor. What sucks more is that they
didn't get any other big money sponsor, which i suspect is why the A+ acts
of last year have been pretty much replaced by mid-tier or lower DJs.

Nevermind the sour taste i have over Carol Marvin and the committee,
everyone I talk to about this years schedule are underwhelmed and I think
that a good part of it has to do with the festival obviously not having
the sort of money it had last year.

Why Carol Marvin was unable to lockdown a sponsor for, in her words the

unecessary law lecture?!) someone just because you disagree with them or
don't want to hear what they say. We can all make up our own minds about
 the posts people make.

Also, to add something substantial here, I'd be quite content to listen to

all the great music of the past if in the present there was nothing
worthwhile being created. The value of the new is precisely that it has
 an
essential difference with the past, and reflects a reality that did not
exist in the past. Simply repackagin something does not make it new.
Fashion is objective in that it reflects the objective historical changes
 in
our society; but the constant craving for what appears to be new when it
 is
only a rehashing of what already is, simply reflects the capitalistic
 drive
to stimulate consumer demand in order to continue to make a profit.

 Arpanet: Wireless Internet (Virgin)
 Released 22/4/02 (UK)

It's all themed around the idea of wireless communication and after a
 couple
of listens I'd say it was pretty good, apart from the truly terrible
 spoken
intro. Very Dopplereffekt/Japanese Telecom, really, but slightly distinct
 as
 well.

On Virgin though, I wasn't expecting that.

I agree, since i havn't read any of the Danger Girl comics, i was kinda
lost. The artwork is good and solid though. I didn't get any of the signed

pretty good, not something i would listen to over and over again like the

Ok I just read through it last night and this is my impression - it's good
for most techno fans but I think that a lot of comic book collectors would
be miffed. The artwork at times does waver but then turn the page and it's
amazing - hand drawn images over what appear to be computer created -
 gives
a f'cking amazing 3D effect. Best pages no doubt! There is little
background into who this lady is though. This is, of course, coming from
someone who does not have any previous Orietta St. Cloud comics and there
are several references to past issues within the comic (anyone know if
there are copies still available of old St. Cloud comics, I'd like to know
what is going on). Sometimes the visuals were down right confusing - I had
no idea what I was looking at or what going on in certain frames, this
coming from a Jack Kirby fan. That said - I do see a lot of connections in
the abstract images of Oldham and Kirby. Anyone familiar with who Oldham
appreciates? What comics/visual artists turn his crank? I don't know how
much time Oldham put into producing this, and I know how time consuming
 and
tiring it is to produce even a single issue (especially an independent),
but the story seems hurried. It's like a vignette and not really a whole
story or doesn't give much impression that there has to be any follow-up.
I'd like to see more and I hope that Mr. Oldham finds more opportunities
 to
produce his comics. I'd keep buying them. The CD rocks but damn I wish I
had a poster in my package!

Just my opinion - please buy the comic, read it, listen to the CD while
reading and form your own opinion. And if could give me your impression
 that would be cool.

RE: [313] broken beat WTF

2002-02-01 Thread FC3 Richards
The thing about Titonton Duvante is that he will start his songs with a
broken beat and then transition into a 4 on the floor beat. The transition
is usually quite smooth and fits what he is doing well.

Adult does the same thing quite a bit on the records of theirs I have. What
I like about the way they do it is when the just slam into that 4/4. It
really gets the song and energy going. If I was a DJ, or a respectable one,
I would play their stuff out all the time. The thing is I don't know many
people in San Diego who know the difference between Adult and Icey. that is
pretty bad...

getting the cartriges for that price and i said No way dude
To make a long dialogue filled story short, he ended up selling me 3
cartriges for $20.00 a piece. half friggen price. The salesmen get paid a
certain amount of comission on each individual item they sell. So if they
can get more comission on an item by cutting the price in half, then they
are more then willing to. I like that one alot.

hey alex...
youre from the uk so you really should know it ,,,
seems like youre a bit narrow minded bout that,,,drum n bass
is music in deed, you might not like itz but you really cant say that
there are only some producers that cut it,,,you should really go and look
how people like optical, ed rush or bad company have pushed music
and also mastering,,,just have a listen to some of their plates
on your system and then play some of your own records,,,you will
see what i talk about
another tihng,,,you should go to a garage/2.step,,anyway called party
and enjoy it,,,dont say its all crap,,be a bit more open-minded and
enjoy music..
thats what i mean..

  Start of message text

Ok, I'm new to this mail service, so I'm not familiar with the topics you
 discuss.

But, surely if you subscribe to a mail service like this, you have more
than a passing interest in music from Detroit?
How on earth did anyone ever confuse Kevin Saunderson and Alex Reece???
I'm
 gobsmacked.

Also Drum and Bass. A load of ex-ravers who discovered a few techno
records
round about 1993, what are most of 'em doing now?
Speed bloody Garage, 2-Step, what ever you want to call it.

Alright, there's a few D+B producers who can cut it (Photek/Dillinja?) but
overall, I have to say it's bobbins, and barely worth a discussion, that
music is full of people just trying to make a fast buck (I don't blame 'em
for that) but really, is it 'music'?

2002-01-23 Thread FC3 Richards
611 Records now has up all the records that they have had in stock in the
last couple of years, and you can order any of the records from that list.
if they do not have it then they will order it for you. I have ordered
there a few times and have been quite happy. i managed to get 5 copies of
the first Spawn record on Probe, which has been out of print for a few years
now. AND it was at my apartment less then a week later. Always friedly
service from these people. They may not have nearly as much as most other
stores, but you are satisified when you get your stuff.

Again Sonic Groove does have a section on their site that lists what they
have in stock. If you click on the Music link from the front page it's
right there, and it's in the header of every single page of the site as
well... browse our current stock list

It would be nice if they had what was in stock in the search section but
 at
least they do have it somewhere.

My experience with Sonic groove is the same. I placed my first order
there two months ago (or more) and it took them 3 weeks to compile 8
records out of the 40 that I had placed for order. It would be nice if
they had the script or whatever that listed the status of their material
 -
 what I like about groovetech.

I have to say that hardwax is still my tops for german stuff. No
listening arenas, but lots of stock and info to browse through. If you
place an order, you get their complete stocklist as well! (at least an
 hour of reading :)

Frankie goes to Hollywood is on there too...I love this comp. I bought the
Dave Clarke one at the same time and kept it for a bit. when i realized i
had most of his comp on vinyl elsewhere i sold it on e-bay. DJ Hell's isn't
leaving my collection though.

To be honest, I know sod all about them.but they did have a track on
 the
 recent DJ Hell Fuse compilation
...the track was called 'Avant...something or other..'
 Sorry can't remember.

If you don't have this track, this comp could be worth picking up
though,...as it also features 'I Feel Love' by Donna Summer amongst other
 gems.

  Start of message text

While we're on the subject of old electronic bands (and I apologise if
 some
one has asked before - I'm new to this)

Who knows if there's anything anywhere on the internet about the band
 'Liasons Dangereuses'?

I have been looking to buy some of their records for about 6 years and in
all that time I've found one 12 on Roadrunner records.
I've kind of given up on that avenue now, all I want is some info on
 them,
there doesn't seem to be any anywhere - any pointers would be really
 appreciated.

that song kick out the jams is awsome when they are playing it live. it is
just too bad they couldn't hold it together longer then they did. it think
they may be almost as good as Grand Funk Railroad. Nowhere near as good as
the Stooges though.

 Hmm. . . Not much. . . d.c. cd's on 18th and u(?) has a small selection.
It's not their specialty, but i've found some interesting things there.

There's another store whose name i forget. . . it's on connecticut less
than a block north of dupont circle. I don't think they carry vinyl, but
their cds are great and perhaps ocassionally rare.

Definately Kevin Saunderson...you can get it on the Faces and Phases CD and
on the Rock to the Beat record that was just repressed by KMS. I just
managed to pick one up a couple of weeks ago.

 | oh yea he played tons of great track including sharivari and
 | an old acid
 | house tune which says rock to the beat (who does that track?).

It might be Reece (Kevin Saunderson), on KMS from 1987, unless it was
another acid track with a similar sample...
