RE: (313) Electroclash (On The Subject)
can't argue with that...I don't really feel that Electroclash is the greatest. I would rather listen to the Direct Beat Electro...And I am having a hard time drawing the line between Electro Clash and Electro Pop. I'll take Adult, Miss Kitten and the Hacker any day over what I have heard out of Felix Da Housecat recently. But then again Felix isn't all that bad... -Original Message- From: willweb [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, September 29, 2002 6:00 AM To: Robertson, Steven; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: (313) Electroclash (On The Subject) Actually I do think Gary Numan was a close relative of the electro family. Electro is rooted in alot more styles then just hip hop. I think anyone that ever made an electro record would have to say that Kraftwerk was a major influence at some point in their life. As well as other styles of music including Funk, Jazz ect. At the time electro started up hip-hop was still a movement and had not completely inundated American culture. Although it may have been an influence (Africa Bambata, BDP, ect) I don't think it was as much of a factor as the majority of synthpop and what was considered alternative at the time (Depeche Mode, New Order, EBN-OZN, ect..). On the subject of Electroclash: I think it is a fresh change from the worn out pop house trance sound that has been killing the mainstream clubs for the last 3 years. Felix Da Housecat (Chicago/Detroit) native is I think the biggest factor of the sound even seeing the light of day. The elements are very closely related to electro and the older synth sound of Detroit, Chicago and Europe. I love it and can't get enogh of it right now, although most of the DJ's down here in Florida hate it, I still shove it down their throats three nights a week at the clubs. Suggested groups or artists would be Audio Bullies, FC Kahuna, Felix / Miss Kitten, Tomcraft, Ladytron, Toktok, Mistress Barbra. Ladytron is on in my car 24/7, and I feel like I'm driving with the female version of Gary Numan. Peace, Will Web

Let's let quot; The Surgeonquot; keep going and make it big and we can let the lawyers do the rest. To tell you all the truth, though, I was actually thinking about going to see quot;Surgeonquot; and Juan's B-day party because I thought it was Anthony Child so I could see how people could get disgruntled about it. I'd be pissed if I had already purchased my tix. I'd probably also be pissed if another artist started using my name. I'm not sure how I would handle it though. RE: [313] techno/house divide (was Peacefrog Records special on B BC)
the greatest dancer, on m_plant is definately house...disco house even, since the main loop is from a disco song...as far as i know... look..i brought robert hood and house back together! - Hi Good point. I tend to think of the music I'm into as techno (Detroit stuff, Trapez, Perlon, etc) but techno's kind of a dirty word around these parts (because it's been subsumed by the hard monotonous European variety of techno), so when I'm asked what I play I say deep electronic house (or sometimes minimal house, but then minimal's kind of a dirty word too). At the end of the day techno and house are two ends of a spectrum, and the distinction is sometimes difficult to make. Do you think techno as originally defined and produced by Juan Atkins would be considered techno if released today? I think it'd probably be called deep house. But I guess most of Rob Hood's stuff is very clearly techno, the Nighttime World albums excepted. And I haven't actually heard the Peacefrog album yet. Cheers Chris For people in Sydney: we're starting up a house night on Thursday August 29, and Inertia (Australian distributors) are giving us copies of Robert Hood's Point Blank album to give away on the night. I'll post more details later, but essentially it's a $6 dollar night at the Hunter Bar in central Sydney, featuring Declan Kelly from Melbourne's Honkytonks and Research Development and Simon Caldwell from Sydney's Mad Racket. [313] Acme?
Hello all... I havn't posted here in a long time, but i seem to have run across a 2X12 test pressing that I need ID'd for me. The label says Acme Vinyl Corperation which is run out of Toronto, and the matrix number is AVA-001, and was mastered @ NSC. Both records are in the acid genre, fairly hard and I like them alot. What I am looking for is who put this out and when were these records put out. But any info would be handy. I have already scanned over record labels at Amazing Discographies and Discogs... thanks ahead of time for the help... RE: [313] modern music in baltimore - opinions
Modern Music in my opinion was way better then YoshitoshiBUT...when i was shopping in that area of the country for records Deep Dish had just taken over the store in Georgetown, and had removed everything from the store, and it was going to take them a while to get back on track. If they have gottenthe store back to where it should be, I don't know...we will have to see. Also, it always seemed to be worth it more to shop at 611 in Philly...I would drive from an hour south of DC to shop there. They will try to get anything there for you. They have a large selection of Detroit records including Jeff Mills and Rob Hood. +8 and Probe too. They have alot of out of print records sitting in the store that no one has picked up yet. I recently purchased 5 copies of the first Spawn record (Prob #3) from there via mail order. 4 of the copies were still sealed. [313] RE: (313) DJ ESP on Generator
There was a trance label out of germany who used the same matrix system as Generator (of Detroit), AO told me that was one of the contributing factors to shutting down the label, amongst many others. as for my original question, i think I figured out why the set isn't listed on the web site. Since Pure Sonic is a T-1000 release only label, the web page is essentially a T-1000 page. All the records that HE has produced are on the page...including the DJAX and Tresor stuff. So Woody McBride doesn't get on the page unless he collaborated with AO...I'm dumb...It is probably the best release on Generator though... He is the only Detroit artist that I have seen lately that has had an ad in a magazine from Detroit lately. DJT-1000 had an ad for The Last DJ on Earth CD, but it only took up a quarter of the page from top to bottom. Richie Hawting on the other hand has thrown his picture out and made it recognizable with full page ads, huge posters, and stickers handed out all over the place. NSC is National Sound Corporation, a pressing plant in Detroit that's been central to the city's music industry for decades. I believe they were pressing Motown records back in the day, and a lot of the P-Funk material was pressed there. They noticed the techno explosion, and the main guy there (forgot his name) gave Mad Mike and Jeff Mills the idea for doing locked grooves - I can't help but notice that a lot of this music you guys are pressing these days is a bit... repetitive..., he said, tactfully, and suggested that he cut a record so one beat just loops indefinitely. UR were impressed, and from then on they used NSC to do all those weird inside-to-out pressings and stuff like that. Eventually NSC decided to launch an imprint of sorts, and a few records came out under it. The Silicon track on the EP you mentioned below is Heath Brunner's best, I reckon, and I often play it if I'm spinning booty or ghetto tech. And I'd say that the Rob Hood track is probably *less* minimal than a lot of his other track - there's some latin percussion in there besides the standard 909, and a voice that sounds to me like it's saying latté!... excuse me everyone, but T-1000 is not a mid-tier DJ. He is a high caliber DJ. I think that everyone here should be happy that this is coming off and people like PVD and PO and all these other Trance eating mofo's aren't showing up. This could have turned into total crap. I think the selection committee has done a good job selecting DJ's. Last year DJ Legal Alien was there as was a few other local Detroit DJ's that don't spin anywhere other then Detroit, and I didn't see anyone complaining. And what about Bill VanLoo??? I don't recall much big talk about him, but after his set at the underground stage at the first DEMF there was nothing but praise for him. Low or Mid tier??? I don't think so. (Sorry to use you as an example, but i had to...keep up the good work) What I am getting at is everyone needs to quit thier b!tch!ng and go to the show and enjoy themselves. Is that too much to ask. We all knew that electronic musics was going to hit it big sometimes, and in the music industry in general there is always something contraversial going on. And someone is always going to get pissed. Also, to add something substantial here, I'd be quite content to listen to all the great music of the past if in the present there was nothing worthwhile being created. The value of the new is precisely that it has an essential difference with the past, and reflects a reality that did not exist in the past. Simply repackagin something does not make it new. Fashion is objective in that it reflects the objective historical changes in our society; but the constant craving for what appears to be new when it is only a rehashing of what already is, simply reflects the capitalistic drive to stimulate consumer demand in order to continue to make a profit. / /dave (The new is what we secretly long for but what does not yet appear in this society.) The artwork at times does waver but then turn the page and it's amazing - hand drawn images over what appear to be computer created - gives a f'cking amazing 3D effect. Best pages no doubt! There is little background into who this lady is though. This is, of course, coming from someone who does not have any previous Orietta St. Cloud comics and there are several references to past issues within the comic (anyone know if there are copies still available of old St. Cloud comics, I'd like to know what is going on). Sometimes the visuals were down right confusing - I had no idea what I was looking at or what going on in certain frames, this coming from a Jack Kirby fan. That said - I do see a lot of connections in the abstract images of Oldham and Kirby. Anyone familiar with who Oldham appreciates? What comics/visual artists turn his crank? I don't know how much time Oldham put into producing this, and I know how time consuming and tiring it is to produce even a single issue (especially an independent), but the story seems hurried. It's like a vignette and not really a whole story or doesn't give much impression that there has to be any follow-up. I'd like to see more and I hope that Mr. Oldham finds more opportunities to produce his comics. I'd keep buying them. The CD rocks but damn I wish I had a poster in my package! Just my opinion - please buy the comic, read it, listen to the CD while reading and form your own opinion. And if could give me your impression that would be cool. RE: [313] broken beat WTF
The thing about Titonton Duvante is that he will start his songs with a broken beat and then transition into a 4 on the floor beat. The transition is usually quite smooth and fits what he is doing well. Adult does the same thing quite a bit on the records of theirs I have. What I like about the way they do it is when the just slam into that 4/4. It really gets the song and energy going. If I was a DJ, or a respectable one, I would play their stuff out all the time. The thing is I don't know many people in San Diego who know the difference between Adult and Icey. that is pretty bad... They may not have nearly as much as most other stores, but you are satisified when you get your stuff. www.611records.com Jeff -Original Message- From: Eric Scuccimarra [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2002 10:32 AM To: Greg Lee; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Re: 313 Digest 23 Jan 2002 14:55:40 - Issue 887 Again Sonic Groove does have a section on their site that lists what they have in stock. If you click on the Music link from the front page it's right there, and it's in the header of every single page of the site as well... browse our current stock list It would be nice if they had what was in stock in the search section but at least they do have it somewhere. I placed my first order there two months ago (or more) and it took them 3 weeks to compile 8 records out of the 40 that I had placed for order. It would be nice if they had the script or whatever that listed the status of their material - what I like about groovetech. I have to say that hardwax is still my tops for german stuff. No listening arenas, but lots of stock and info to browse through. If you place an order, you get their complete stocklist as well! (at least an hour of reading :) greg Gregory B. RE: [313] Liasons Dangereuses
Frankie goes to Hollywood is on there too...I love this comp. I bought the Dave Clarke one at the same time and kept it for a bit. when i realized i had most of his comp on vinyl elsewhere i sold it on e-bay. DJ Hell's isn't leaving my collection though. jeff -Original Message- From: james boylan [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 5:58 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Liasons Dangereuses To be honest, I know sod all about them.but they did have a track on the recent DJ Hell Fuse compilation ...the track was called 'Avant...something or other..' Sorry can't remember. If you don't have this track, this comp could be worth picking up though,...as it also features 'I Feel Love' by Donna Summer amongst other gems. I have been looking to buy some of their records for about 6 years and in all that time I've found one 12 on Roadrunner records. I've kind of given up on that avenue now, all I want is some info on them, there doesn't seem to be any anywhere - any pointers would be really appreciated. - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. RE: [313] throbbing gristle LP
that song kick out the jams is awsome when they are playing it live. it is just too bad they couldn't hold it together longer then they did. it think they may be almost as good as Grand Funk Railroad. Nowhere near as good as the Stooges though. jeff -Original Message- From: Frederic Madre [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 18, 2002 1:18 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] throbbing gristle LP Something tells me we're not in Detroit anymore ... yeah, let's talk about the MC5 brothers and sisters, f. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Not much. . . d.c. cd's on 18th and u(?) has a small selection. It's not their specialty, but i've found some interesting things there. There's another store whose name i forget. . . it's on connecticut less than a block north of dupont circle. I don't think they carry vinyl, but their cds are great and perhaps ocassionally rare. ben On Mon, 26 Nov 2001, Rusty Blasco wrote: Does anyone know of anything exciting happening at Buzz, or anywhere else in DC for that matter, the weekend of December 7 (which happens to be approximately a week and a half from today)? [313] Rock to the Beat!
Definately Kevin Saunderson...you can get it on the Faces and Phases CD and on the Rock to the Beat record that was just repressed by KMS. I just managed to pick one up a couple of weeks ago. jeff -Original Message- From: Brendan Nelson [EMAIL PROTECTED] [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, November 23, 2001 6:25 AM To: 'Scotto'; 313 Subject: RE: [313] Speaking of Jeff van dyke... | -Original Message- | From: Scotto [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] | Sent: Friday, November 23, 2001 3:09 PM | | oh yea he played tons of great track including sharivari and | an old acid | house tune which says rock to the beat (who does that track?). It might be Reece (Kevin Saunderson), on KMS from 1987, unless it was another acid track with a similar sample...
