(313) Searching for Sugar Man

2013-02-25 Thread KiDD*e

Hey 313ers

I wanted to encourage you to go to see this movie earlier this year.
Here's another chance to talk about it.
I'm glad it has won the best 2013 documentary feature Oscar.
This guy really deserve some great esteem.
I'm quite sure Detroit residents knows his amazing story by now, but if
some of you around the world has the chance that your local movie
theatre plays this movie, you should really go to watch it.

Nice to hear so many people on the list.
As for me, I subscribed in the late 90's.
Like it happened some weeks ago with Andrew Green, it's always great to
meet others 313 technotourists subscribers.

I went to the Jeff Mills Axis 20th anniversary party in Paris last week,
and this next friday Derrick May is at the Rex club, so my
Detroit-Techno needs are really fulfil :)

Enjoy,

Yes the early morning part of his set was very appreciable, i wish he
could go like this on night long.
I guess he was not as cheerful as he could be for his previous
anniversaries.

He still has a lots of kindness for the true lovers.

“Andy Green”, ok i've got it now, you're Mr Verdant :)

list a few hours before the doors opened. We started queuing at 9
and Laurent spotted us. After a short chat he was amazed at the
dedication to the cause and put us on the GL!

I agree with you about the music selection. The first 2 and last 1
hour were more to my deeper tastes with some interesting Chicago and
Detroit selections. (there was a Jamie Principle track early that
was a new one to me). Otherwise too much meh and anonymous tech house,
it was well put together but didn't enlighten or get deep. Pity as
I thought he might show us his adventurous side on such a special
occasion.

I was ever so tempted to head out again to Delano Smith but after 48
hours awake my body said 'non'.

Tertio !!

I like the two remixes, but the Scott's beatless mix extracts the
essence of this beautiful original track.

Anyway it could be this one too ? :

I don't think I'm likely to go back except
for a special occasion like this if I happen to be in Berlin again, because
when you get down to it, it's really just another big club with door staff
who discriminate because they can. I've been in and around the music
scene for much, much longer than they have, and I don't need that sh1t.

Have you ever tried :

They have a nice selection that suits 313ers tastes i think.
I like their listening preview system, which at last is close to a browsing
experience through a vinyl in a record shop.

And yes, i also really love the Deadbeat's "Roots and Wire" album, it has a
real homogenous approach and progressive development.

techno*... don't they already refer to him as 'notre Jeff Mills?' For
a country that's made an art form of 'Le Cynicisme' the French do like

I've been wondering the same thing.
Two years after the last EP on Alleviated with this wonderful languorous

I also love the mysterious acid line on "Mercurian Funk".

2008-04-13 Thread KiDD*e
Yeah, that's definitively true, "Sokinsikartep" has it too, less tweaked,
maybe the original preset you are talking about.
Thanks for your enlightenment Mr Peteri :)

Answering Frank, yes this "Circus Bell" remix is quite interesting.
Indeed it's more accurate to call it a cover.
The whole thing has a slight brasilian rhythmic touch, only the ambulance
bells are kept, and it's melt with the Arp 2600 pattern too. Theses both are
well layered.

As for Slam's "Azure", i'm not that disappointed, i think is a nice
(re)-interpretation, secret ingredients have always been part of a good
recipe.

It has already happen...
I remember at the Rex Club being told to keep the sliding window closed
because the week before someone quietly stole the free turntable's needle
while the DJ was plunged in his flycase looking for the next record.
I was like HUH!, totally stunned! And i can't even imagined the DJ's
reaction when it happened...

You can see the DJ's booth sliding-window on the second picture :

A touch of Gotham City in this.
Dark, but so deeply filled with this soul tinged with melancholy hope which
emanate from the gloom.
The essence of the High Tech Soul 313 techno that we all love.

Yeah, I only just clicked, I think!

Although perhaps it's a misunderstanding.

Actually Kidd*e, Mr Atkins has been looking very well indeed in the last
few months.

He's booked to play a few gigs in Europe over Easter with Model 500 with
Mike Banks and co.

Yeah, i'd like to go to this celebration. I've done a break with clubbing

I've got such a wonderful memory of the Haçienda party during the 15th
anniversary :

That would be fun to meet you Benoît.

By the way Juan Atkins will be in Paris March 22nd :

Since it's a Soulful-House/Deep-House gig, he's bound to play a special

I've given up to get all worked up everytime i hear this term wrongfully

If someone says to me that its gonna be an "electro" party, i always ask

"EE-LeK-TrOw" (with a robot distorted voice). If he doesn't get it, i say

Hello 313,

Being a bedroom DJ i don't want to spend too much in my mixer.
That's why i've pointed the last Allen & Heath Xone:42.
The new Mackie d.4 Pro has nice features too, and i've been told that the
sound quality is pretty nice as well.
I need to make a choice between theses both.

I know, it's a bit scary but some german magazine asked german dj's such as
Hell, Väth, Villalobos and Hawtin (well he's almost german)
to take a pic of their livingroom...some funny, some filthy, some scary..

Check: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/thread.php?msgid=7308676

Unfortunately the text is in germanbut the pics speak for itself:-)

Sorry i'm bored...

Martijn

(313) So, dutch people, how much did you enjoy stinkworx convextion

2007-03-04 Thread KiDD*e
I really loved convextion live last night in Paris.
SooOOOo pretty.
And he is such a nice guy, so humble, he looks like a teenager wearing his
backpack (the moment i've talked to him).
I was so happy to have them stopping here in their tour.
Actually most of the audience wasn't really prepared for such a "smooth
techno", he has begun his live around 4 after two great energetic DJ set, so
the room run empty, though the aficionados stayed on the dancefloor, and
really enjoyed his live. Almost all the tracks were from his last album on
Down Low, with some more non identified ones.
I love, i love, i love his lovely deep melodic techno !
Hope you all english/irish to have a great time next week-end !

No one mentioned it is on Kompakt.
For me Aril only tried to prove one thing :
If you wanna be more famous, signed on a hype label, just produce borderline
music, and it will works perfectly.
I think Aril was totally aware of that, and he simply did it.
I guess thats why he has this ironic talking.

Ooh yeah!
Thanks Martin for this link.
I've always wanted to watch this documentary again!
I do remember when i first saw it ten years ago on Arte.
That's from this doc that i learnt more about Detroit Techno.
Like, how artists spirits are imbued with the city atmosphere and thus
deeply root inside their productions.
Actually the main part i've always remembered of the doc is when Derrick is
over the phone trying to persuade Mike Banks to give an interview.
That was the fisrt that i "saw" Mad Mike.
Great documentary, a must to check. Easier from frenchies since the
subtitles are in French, though except a little bit of german at the
beginning the rest of the doc is in english.

I grew up in Washington DC. The influence of James Brown on
my city, and on me, is incalculable.

He had many ups and downs, but the music stands completely beyond.

One of my prized possessions is an obscure King Records 45
released for the Christmas season in late 1970: "Santa Claus Is
Definitely Here to Stay." It was later put on a Christmas compilation
and is online here:

http://play.rhapsody.com/jamesbrown/funkychristmas/santaclausisdefinitelyheretostay?didAutoplayBounce=true

It was basically a radio station promo, though I don't remember
hearing it back then even though I was a total devotee of WOL
and WOOK, the great soul stations of the era in Washington.
Listening to it now, it really sums up the great human spirit of
this often misunderstood and flawed man. When that record
came out, he had already been a recording artist for 16 years.
That was 36 years ago.

He did it all -- gospel, doo wop, ballads, soul, disco, pop and that
great string of funk tracks that defines an era and had phenomenal
influence worldwide -- sparking not only the funk bands of
the US but reggae, the many flavors of Afro-pop, go go, hip hop,
house and techno. The vocal style, the band, the theatrical
flourishes, the athletic and the showmanship all mixed together, the
sound that reached for both the earth and the heavens -- bits
and pieces of it all went everywhere. That's James Brown.

Re: (313) Gary Martin mix anyone?

2006-10-05 Thread KiDD*e
I remember this one :
http://www.d-i-r-t-y.com/medias/mix_gigi_galaxy.ram
Recorded something like 4 years ago.

As you thought, it is maybe a little bit "hard and loopy".
There must have some other mixes floating around the net which are closer to
his Teknotika productions.

Im pretty sure it appears on the Ghetto Houz' series on Funk Records :
http://www.discogs.com/label/Funk+Records
Most tracks are big medleys, so many samples were used.
It think it was sampled on severals DanceMania records before, its like the
Laid Back "White Horse" little notes that float around on theses records.

You can get more info about the Marcellus Pittman gig here :

No interesting parties to come the next days...

Since the topic of Paris was floating about recently, I figured I'd
ask about this coming weekend specifically: any cool music things
happening this Friday thru the following Tuesday? Seems like there was
a mention of M. Pittman DJing or something? Any more details on that?

I'll be over for a few days to hang out. Any other recommendations of
places to check are also welcome (restaurant, bar, record shop, etc).

Thanks!

That's totally right, the so called "electro" is omnipresent around here.
But you can still find some very interesting 313 related parties sometimes.
I've missed DJ Bone on August 25th, and this party "R.U. Detroit ?" with you
Fabrice.
Hmm, i do regret it...cause i have very good memories of your set for the
'Paradise Massage' party on May 2002 with Titonton Duvanté.
That's gonna be for the next time :)

Every time I good clubbing in Paris I have a great time, and I love the rex,
even if its drinks are very ££. Love the rig and the crowd, very friendly.

Also like hearing Laurent when he plays there, the last 12 hour I saw him do
there was blinding.

Exactly, it always makes me laugh when they talk about "Podcasting".
Its the perfect example of a "buzz word".
Nobody knows what it is, but its hype... so, Podcast blah, Podcast there,
Podcast everywhere.
While its just an automatic way to get the so old fashion stored MP3,
without going on the webpage and do "Save As"
S revolutionary...
Well, im ok with that, it make the thing easier, but its far to deserve such
a blahblah.
