(313) Detroit equipment (was do you*)

2004-03-09 Thread Quest Pond
I beg to differ in you saying 727 is OT . I think what you are mentioning is
the true essence of detroit music- Classics like roland 101,303,808, 909 and
727.

I noticed on that interview with Carl Craig he talks about his first track
and how he only used alesis mmt8 and prophet 600 to knock it together, i
though this interesting.

I noticed nice pics of most of this equipment in the submerge museum thingy,
So im taking it this is Detroit related thread.

Any other Detroit equipment i don't know about?

Another Chicago track I'd suggest as something to bridge the gap
is Essence Of A Dream by K-Alexi - very Detroit strings on that
one, and the TR-727 Latin Module drum machine on there is definitely
more of a Detroit sound than a Chicago sound.

I know stefan had one when i was there in 93, it was love at first sight. even
used it on that fragments track. instant magic-machine. as for the mpc60, i
have the 2000xl and i do miss that timing a lot. so 3000 or 60 will be my
advice to to create that bouncy feel. sp1200 remains the king beyond a

The Yamaha TX81z and DX100, Roland MT32, Roland vintage dum machines, Roland

memory serves me right, Kenny Larkin used a JV990 on a number of his tracks.

I seem to remember Carl using a Korg M1 for some of his early tracks too.

The Yamaha TX81z and DX100, Roland MT32, Roland vintage dum machines, Roland
D50, JV-990 and JD800 and several others have made the rounds in Detroit. If
memory serves me right, Kenny Larkin used a JV990 on a number of his tracks.

Yamaha DX100. Juan Atkins mentioned using it for bass in a magazine article
a few years back and they shot from $50-$75 to $300 on the used market.
They're small and cute. Any of the Yamaha DX series actually; what made
gear Techno Gear to begin with was it's cheapness.

off and I have my bank balance as evidence :)

In the late 80s, machines like the TR909, TR303, DX100, etc could often be
found in pawn shops for under $100. A friend of mine remembers going into
a music store in Texas in the mid-80s and seeing a pile of TR606 and TR303
in the orignal boxes, going for $100 for the pair. A friend in Minneapolis
bought a TR303, TR909, and a third piece of gear for $75 by answering a
newspaper ad.
