RE: v17 PDF-Manuals

2018-08-10 Thread Steve Makohin via 4D_Tech
For fans of PDF user manuals, and having to wade through large documents (like
the 4D Language Guide), I've enjoyed using (free) PDF-XChange Editor
(https://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-editor).

Their PDF reader is free, and it's super-fast. The first search you do build
internal indexes. As long as you keep the document open, subsequent searches
are even faster. It's way faster compared to Acrobat reader, even on unindexed
PDFs.

RE: Who’s the Gestapo?

2018-07-16 Thread Steve Makohin via 4D_Tech
I post to this list from Outlook. I have no idea why, by my original post
doesn't *seem* to appear in the list. In other words, I don't get an email from
the list showing my original post. Curious. I can't explain it. (Not a problem
for me)

This *might* give someone the impression that they're being censored, or that
there's a technical problem that prevents their posts from showing up on the
list.

However, I do get replies from the list, indicating my original post did make
it to the list, even though I didn't see it.

That’s what I was missing. I was looking only at the interpreted version, and
not thinking ahead to the compiled version. Thanks!

you could build your app.

http://doc.4d.com/4Dv16/4D/16.3/Application-builder.300-3670789.en.html

if you don't, technically you are running 4D (or 4D Server) so I am not sure it
would be totally honest to have a different window title.

How do you remove the icon from windows' title bar?

2018-04-23 Thread Steve Makohin via 4D_Tech
When my app opens a window whose window type has a title bar, the 4D icon
appears on the left side of the window's title bar. Is there any way to have
no icon in the title bar?

How to change title on 4D's main (MDI) window?

2018-04-23 Thread Steve Makohin via 4D_Tech
How to you set the window title on 4D's main (MDI) window?

It currently reads "4D". I'd like to permanently set it to an alternate
string, which never changes, and is known before the app launches (e.g.,
"Steve's Custom App"). I'm looking for a solution that does not require
plug-ins.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Character limit in form text variables?

2017-02-13 Thread Steve Makohin via 4D_Tech
Jeffrey Kain wrote " There seems to be about a 383K character limit in text
variables on a form. I have a text document that's about 670K characters
(670,092 characters to be exact) and when I try to paste it into a 4D form
(v15.4/Mac/Unicode) it truncates at exactly 383,046 characters..."

V14.5 Windows has a similar problem. Import a ton of text into the database,
but <200,000 characters show up in the text-edit field for viewing and editing.
There's LOTS of free memory, do that's not the problem.

Realize that what the editing field displays and what ends up stored in the
database *might* be different. The displayed editing field truncates the text
in my tests.

Furthermore, even with truncated text shown in the text-editing field, I can
programmatically access and change the full text. I have not run any tests to
determine what happens if I manually change the truncated text in the
text-editing field. I don't know if that change then causes the truncated text
to be saved to the database.

How do you set a Tab control's "selected" color?

2016-11-28 Thread Steve Makohin
How do you set the (standard 4D) Tab control's "selected" color?

It shows up as black text on a whit background, but I'd like background
color (currently white) to match the default light gray color of a form
background.

I'm using 4D 14.5 Windows.

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for your reply.

You describe what I've been doing as my "rolled my own" solution. I was
wondering if someone else had come to a simpler or more elegant solution.

Hallo Steve,
I used 4D HTML Tag using xlsx file or old excel xml file and it work fine.
You can build your own graphic in an excel document, save it in xml. Open the
file withe a text editor like text wrangler replace the cell values with 4D
HTML TAG. You can 4DTEXT and the powerful 4DLOOP if you have table with array
and 4DIF for any condition you have. Write your method open your template file
fill all your variables and arrays that are in the file then use the command
“PROCESS 4D TAGS”, save all in the new document and that’s it!
I used also a method that write the file directly in xlsx, but it is more
complex because you have to know all the xml structure and attribute values.

How do you create an Entity Relationship diagram using 4D?

2016-10-18 Thread Steve Makohin
Does anyone know of any package solution that lets you create an Entity
Relationship diagram using 4D, under 4D's control? I've provided an example
of what I'm looking for at this link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8nins0cfk40bww0/Entity_Relationship_Diagram.jpg?dl
=0

Ideally, 4D would call the solution and provide the data describing the
Entities and their relationships. The solution would generate the diagram. I
need to display the diagram on the screen and be able to print it. I'll be
coding in 4D v14.

I know I can "roll my own" using 4D's SVG, but I'm hoping not to reinvent
the wheel, if at all possible.

How do you populate an Excel spreadsheet using 4D?

2016-10-18 Thread Steve Makohin
Does anyone know how to populate a formatted Excel spreadsheet using 4D, and
do so under 4D's control? My preferred method is to have 4D replace "tags"
in the spreadsheet with its own values. I'd also prefer if someone already
has the code to do this. I'll be coding in v14.

I've written a sophisticated Excel spreadsheet generator for another client,
but I'm wondering if there's an easier, simple way to go about this when the
spreadsheet is of a known, fixed format.
