Re: [57north-discuss] Themed Thursdays
Really good ideas ! and really interested in the FPGA talk - can we firm up a date for this please, this thursday maybe ? If anyone is interested in knowing how to tweet automatically from a system please say; I can demo, and give pointers on use and abuse. Themed Thursdays have kind of fallen off; I'm keen to see if we can resurrect them. I've a couple of things that I'd be willing to run: - FPGA programming - there seems to be a couple of people interested in playing with FPGAs. I could run an evening where we go through the fundamental of designing for FPGAs and get flashing lights (and maybe something more adventurous) running on some dev boards (I think I can provide 2 cyclone II boards and a Spartan 6 (I'd have to have a look and see if I can find them - the cyclone II boards are pretty cheap if we need more) to play with. - Basic digital electronics - lets grab some resistors and transistors and build basic RTL gates and other things. I think the step from single transistor to logic is often fuzzy. Resistor transistor logic is pretty simple and we could easily wire up a variety of gates on a bread board and build something more complicated (I'd go for an adder (not awfully complicated but is useful) but am open to suggestions). We could look at some of the other options for building logic too. Things I'd be interested in/we've talked about in the past if anyone would run them (or be willing to do them with others): - Soldering - Soldering is something that is very easy to do wrong but regularly required. There are lots of tips and tricks that can make it easier. Let's set aside some time to exchange tips/tricks/pointers to where such can be found and make everybodies soldering better (world domination to follow shortly). - Pointing robot - We have a robot arm with a laser pointer and some plans to use it to find where things are kept in the space. There are quite a lot of things that need to be done to get it to do all of that: a database/list of what's in the space and where it is (or should be), a way to get from that to what we want the arm to do to point at something, control/sensing of the arm location, an interface to look up something for the arm to point at, power supply for the arm + control stuff, probably more stuff that I've forgotten about. I'd like to work on this as a group project. - 3D printer/mill - Ed donated most of the parts needed to make a 3D printer or CNC mill. Could we have an evening to have a look at what the plans are to build it? Is there any interest in any of the above actually happening? Would you like something else? Are you willing to run something? Robert -- Robert McWilliam r...@allmail.netwww.ormiret.com Disclaimer: Opinions cited by me are not necessarily my opinions. Re: [57north-discuss] Tuesday Talkers
Hi I don't mind doing a Tuesday up talk, some random ideas I could do are... - Web development state of the nation - and insider's view on web development generally and locally. I did this at TechMeetup a couple of months ago, so one or two people have maybe seen this already. - Inside a healthy Open Source project and community - In October I went to Joomla Day (Joomla is an Open Source CMS, Joomla Day is the annual conference), so this would be a talk about various Open Source project governance models and practical experiences of the community. - An introduction to the Joomla CMS. This would be a quick fly though the Joomla CMS system and platform. So we'd talk though use cases, user experiences, installation, configuration, code structure, developing extensions, coding up templates, tool-sets, skill-sets and comparisons to other CMS systems. ...so if anyone would be interested in one or more of them, let me know. Don't expect anything too cool or TED-like though, just blurb about the things I'm into :) Cheers Andy On 27 October 2014 09:29, Dave Hibberd d...@vehibberd.com wrote: Much like Themed Thursdays, talkers on Tuesdays has been quiet this last couple of weeks. A CR2032 will die after just over 5 years whether it's in a motherboard or on the shelf. The pricing reflects how long it is since they left the factory. Thus, the RS ones are guaranteed to have more than four years of life left; if they're on the shelf for more than a year they sell them on to wholesalers to repackage them and sell them more cheaply. When they've been on the wholesaler's shelf for two or three years they sell them on to the likes of Poundland for pennies. Just clarifying... ;-) Hi, Peet. Re: [57north-discuss] Fake CR2032 batteries.
Tony, your linked article talks about the difficulty in finding the mysterious Chinese factories churning out the real looking batteries.? The reason they look real is because they *are* real, and the Chinese distributors are just buying them at various points throughout their shelf life - there are no factories! I spent the best part of 20 years as a computer engineer, and one of the hardest things I found to get across to my customers was that they weren't saving money by buying a multi-pack of CR2032s as when the one they put in the motherboard died all their spares would be dead too. So, we have a lot of 'dodgy' CR2032 batteries on the market anyway... I spent the best part of 20 years as a computer engineer, and one of the hardest things I found to get across to my customers was that they weren't saving money by buying a multi-pack of CR2032s as when the one they put in the motherboard died all their spares would be dead too. OK, I've been building computers for the past 35 years :-) A lot of that time, like now, I've been resurrecting old computers for re-use and I often find the batteries are flat because the systems have been powered off for a long time - It's not just the battery shelf-life. In the past, I've always bought brand-name batteries from a reputable supplier and, I must admit, I was absolutely astonished when Iain got CR2032's at such a low price from PoundLand - Well, now we know why! I also laboured under the embarrasing misapprehension that most CMOS RAM batteries were 'trickle' charged until I looked into it recently. Rechargeable batteries were used in the past and we were warned that the PC charging circuit used might make disposable batteries explode! Maybe this was just an urban myth, like the 'fake' batteries?
