Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Email program suggestion? - just about ready to scream

2013-06-10 Thread Ray F
My email is all messed up now. Gmail is for more personal stuff this one is
for everything else. But...ATT webmail, which is handled by Yahoo just went
nuts. Everything goes to trash file not inbox. Pain to get to using my
non-smart phone at a light. Happens on phone or pc with the webmail. Even
with my client I check webmail because spam goes there. And sometimes it's
not really SPAM.
Also use to be if I got mail on one pc it would still usually show up on my
other too, now it does not. So I have mail scattered. I put Tbird on my mini
because mail and express are gone with Win7. It's better than using
webmail(except for checking for SPAM)but sometimes mail shows up late
sometimes the next day.
I think I can use Tbird to read Gmail but not the other way?

I vote gmail too. Loved Eudora and especially Calypso but gmail just makes
more sense now and I like the integrated calendar. Many useful features
and some useless (to me) ones, too.

 Hi Theresa -
Yep, I remember your probs with Tbird, and how you've tried everything
but voodoo to fix them. What about what Holly said, just going with
Gmail and skipping the desktop client all together? Gmail can def handle
huge volumes of mail. It doesn't have all the features of a desktop
client, but you can still set up filters, etc.
I'm still almost certain that your probs with not having Tbird sync with
Gmail is caused by a slow dialup connection. So if you go strictly with
the cloud you'll eliminate the need to sync at all.
Have you looked at Yahoo! email? I use their basic version and it is ok
 - but for your volume of mail and feature needs you'd want to go with
their paid version. Offers 200 filters, forwarding, POP too (if you
want it), no ads, an offline mode, etc. And it's only $19.99 for a
year. http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/ They also have a pretty nice
Android smartphone, tablet app. Not sure about iPhone.

While I used to love my Thunderbird email program, I started looking
through the folders tonight. It's been a few days since I really
  checked
to see what I've received. I don't have a clue about what the program
is doing/has done. Several emails I have multiple copies for, some as
many as five; the filters work when they want to, and aren't even
unchecking as they used to when there was a problem.

I spent at least 15 minutes again today deleting emails from Gmail
online because either it or Tbird or both can't receive/send the
  message
that messages have been deleted - so when Tbird picks up, the messages
are still in Gmail (we decided once that it was probably dial-ups fault
  - and I have POP3).

I have, while Tbird was off, gone in under Windows Explorer and looked
at the data folders - there are folders and emails in there that I
deleted ages ago, from all 3 of the accounts that I get.

You all know how I feel about not being able to automatically sort the
filters. HP's diagnostics says my hard drive passes all the tests.

I scan regularly with my avast!, and ran the online scanner with bit
defender a couple of days ago, and both report that I am clean. Getting
ready to run bd again, because avast!'s daily run says I'm fine.

I loved Eudora. For a long while Tbird was a great replacement. (I'm
running Windows 7 Home, by the way.) I get 2-400 emails a day.

I love that Thunderbird is non-Microsoft. I like the ease of
transferring and adding and subtracting folders. I like the relative
ease of backing up my filters and data. I wanted/want something that's
actually being worked on, for support.

Any suggestions for replacement? I would definitely appreciate them. I
have several folders, and definitely some to keep emails, so I don't
feel I can just try programs randomly.

I want something reliable, not Microsoft, where I can sort filters
automatically, it won't lose emails, backs up at least decently well,
can handle several accounts (at least 3) with many emails a day, and
  sorts/filters like it's supposed to. I suppose I'm looking for a dream
  program?

  Thanks
  Theresa

[A-1-Computer_Tech] ATT - was Re: Email program suggestion?

2013-06-10 Thread Theresa
Aha! That may partly be why I'm having more trouble than usual with ATT
on my phone, not a smart phone either. The browser now usually takes
longer to load and/or switch pages, and Yahoo's searching is lousy.
Yesterday I searched for phrase A, changed to searching for phrase B,
went two or three pages, found and clicked on a result, and the page
returned was for phrase A. Happened two or three times.

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Re: Email program suggestion?

2013-06-10 Thread Donk
Theresa - have you tried Gmail's offline mode? It should fit your
situation pretty well. It even has a flaky connection setting for
slow or bad connections. I've heard it is very good for syncing your
online mail with the offline client it puts on your computer. If a
connection is lost during sync, it will simply re-start from where it
left off the next time you connect. In the offline client you can read,
search, sort, compose, etc. your messages. Any outbound messages will
automatically be sent next time you connect. Basically, it is just a
desktop, or phone/tablet gmail client like Tbird. It is mainly
designed to work with the Chrome browser, but I think Firefox and
Internet Explorer have plug-ins for it too.
I've never tried it but it sounds good. You can install it from your
main Gmail page.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't use just gmail for a couple of
reasons. #1 is I would have to be online, and that's something I'm
really trying to cut back on. I have gotten into the very bad habit of
letting one link lead to another and another and another - and before I
realize it, I've spent hours or a good chunk of time surfing when I
should have been doing multiple other things. I love learning new
 things - I just don't/can't trust myself.

#2. I keep my parent's account, and another that we share. They don't
want the hassle of going online. I keep trying to get them into the
computer classes at the Community Center, so they will see and hear
 different angles on the idea.

#3 And, really, I like the idea of not having to go online every time I
need an email. I can search and read and answer offline, and, I admit,
I'm on a few lists like Flylady, which help me with being organized and
 decluttered.

I do need to finish switching everything over to gmail. Right now my
main gmail account picks up from Earthlink. However, even if we ever
get moved, Earthlink is still only dial-up in that area, and I may have
to switch providers if I want to get around that. We will be about eight
blocks from the local cable provider, but their accounts are pretty
 expensive.

With Gmail it doesn't matter what ISP account I have with whom. That's
 nice.
