Theresa - have you tried Gmail's offline mode? It should fit your situation pretty well. It even has a "flaky connection" setting for slow or bad connections. I've heard it is very good for syncing your online mail with the offline client it puts on your computer. If a connection is lost during sync, it will simply re-start from where it left off the next time you connect. In the offline client you can read, search, sort, compose, etc. your messages. Any outbound messages will automatically be sent next time you connect. Basically, it is just a desktop, or phone/tablet gmail client like Tbird. It is mainly designed to work with the Chrome browser, but I think Firefox and Internet Explorer have plug-ins for it too. I've never tried it but it sounds good. You can install it from your main Gmail page.
