[abcusers] Newbie.

2002-11-14 Thread Christopher Myers
I tried emailing the list owner, but to no avail.
Does anyone know how to access an archive of postings to this list, or
an FAQ, or a web-accessible version? I don't want to ask questions that
have been posed dozens of times, to the frustration of frequent haunters
of this list.

Thanks,

Hi David and Christopher,

and welcome to abcusers both of you. :-)

It's been rather quiet here for a while, but don't expect that to last.
Hope your email programs have big inboxes. ;-)

The list owner - I suppose that's Toby (Rider). Don't expect too much
help from him. He's a great guy, but he's running quite a lot of
different lists, so usually he doesn't have much time to spare for each
of them.

There's an archive of old messages at:
http://www.mail-archive.com/abcusers%40argyll.wisemagic.com/
It doesn't go back more than half a year, though.

But don't be afraid to bring up old subjects here. People do it all the
time.

As for a FAQ - I don't think I've ever seen one, but if it extists, it's
probably on Chris Wlashaw's site:
http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/

But it's quite simple, really:
+No jacket required - we try to keep things informal here.
+Good manners are required.
+You should sign your messages with your full name, but
apart from that, stick to first names (unless that might
 cause confusion, of course)
+Stupid questions are allowed.
+We try to avoid off topic postings, but to be frank, we're
 not very good at that.
+Laura and Laurie are not the same person! They are about as
different as two abcusers can be. ;-)
+Don't call David Dave - he doesn't like it.
+You should keep all tunes Jack posts here. They're always
 lovely, and usually pretty unusual.
+Avoid discussing Norwegian traditional music with Eric, he
already knows far too much about that topic ;-)

Cheers

[abcusers] abc drum notation and abc2ps

2002-11-14 Thread Christopher Myers
Hello, Group!

I recently joined a Fife Drum Corps (as a Fifer), and was handed a
repertoire composed of horrible photocopies of photocopies. I then
proceeded to poke around to find out the best way to re-notate all the
music, and stumbled upon abc, which I decided was the best and fastest
way to do it.

I have been having pretty good success in rendering the music, mainly
using abcm2ps (not abc2ps) to generate printed scores, and now the Drum
Sergeant is looking to see if we can use abc to generate Drum scores.
Most of the notation looks like it can be rendered, but there are a
couple of things I can't seem to find:

1) Can I use an X for a note head?
2) Can I put multiple slashes across the stem of a note? (I think that's
the symbol for a roll or something)
3) Can I render a grace note without the tie? (That's a 'flam').

I'm sure there are other things too, but those are the biggies the Drum
Sergeant came up with last night.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [abcusers] Stop the list - I want off!

I too have tried to unsubscribe, to no avail.

I looked at the source of the web page, and may have found the problem.
(Those of you who are programmers, please double check).

If I am right, this says if the button is checked, you subscribe; if it
is unchecked, you unsubscribe. However, the form uses a radio button,
not a checkbox, so to unsubscribe, you check the button that has to be
 unchecked in order to unsubscribe

  FONT COLOR=black FACE=Arial, Arial, Arial subscribe/FONTINPUT
 TYPE=RADIO NAME=command Value=subscribe checked
 FONT COLOR=black FACE=Arial, Arial, Arialunsubscribe/FONTINPUT
 TYPE=RADIO NAME=command Value=unsubscribe unchecked

OK, I took the bait.

The above code DOES NOT say that the radio button needs to be
unchecked in order to unsubscribe. All that HTML code says is that
this is the default state of these form items at page load time, i.e.
When I load the page, the Subscribe button is checked, whereas the
unsubscribe button is not. The latter is redundant, being that they are
radio buttons, hence your confusion.

OK? Cheers,

Email me (off-list), with all of your email addresses email address
aliases, I'll manually search for you. 95% of the time when this happens
it's because someone forgot what address they subscribed with, because
they have so many darned addresses/aliases they can't remember them all.
Or they subscribed to the digest/normal list and are trying unsubscribe
from the wrong version of the list.

2002-11-14 Thread howard
Phil,

there's a Quebec music list at http://groups.yahoo.com/quetrad where tunes are
exchanged.

I'm not from Quebec but I worked in Montreal about 20 years ago and came across a
group called Eritage - bought their LP which started me including Quebec music in my
repertoire.b
