Agree on that george (but it might be difficult to select other national
figures) I think Dipendra's suggestion of having different types of cuts
for various denominations on corners is quite good and may also be
considered in addition to your suggestions, it's both easily detectable
 and
 maintainable for a long run.

I have found the currency notes of Australia most accessible. The salient
 features that struck me are

 1. The denominations written in large print without any stylised type
 style
 2. Significant difference in size
 3. Significant difference in texture

In addition, there is no need for Mahathma Gandhi to be on all
denominations. We can have different National Icons on different
 denominations

These are just a few off the bat responses. Sorry for this delay in
 writing.

 George

 Hello friends,

We, through a Jaipur based NGO, are planning to submit a representation
 to
Reserve Bank of India, to add more accessibility features in currency
 notes.
As we all know, RBI has incorporated a slightly embossed triangle on the
 top
of 100 Rupee note and a circle on 500 Rupee note. This triangle or circle
can be felt on new currency notes of respective denomination.

I invite your valuable suggestions to make currency notes more
 accessible
or identifiable for VIs. What precisely can be done to make currency
 notes
easily identifiable, is there any country which has taken a lead in this
area, What is the experience of VIs there, Etc.

 CBSE buffer for differently-abled

 Sonia Sarkar

 [ 2 Oct, 2006 0015hrs IST

 TIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

In a recent move, CBSE has asked the schools to provide a number of
concessions while marking the children with special needs as the board
 is all set to
provide special training to teachers to check these answer scripts.

It has been observed that physically and visually challenged children
are little less competent than the general kids on three subjects -
 maths, science
and English. However, we want them to be comfortable with these subjects
and encourage to take up these subjects in future.

And the interest can be generated partly by providing them with good
marks in the exams, said CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly.

He further added: We want to sensitise the teachers about the ways they
would evaluate and mark the answer scripts of these kids. A group of
 teachers will
be identified and special training will be provided to them to ensure
that a physically or visually challenged kid doesn't complain that
 he/she is not
 marked fairly.

In the recent set of rules, schools have been asked to exempt a
physically challenged child from studying third language up to Class
 VIII besides an additional
one hour will be given to such examinees.

Moreover, a separate set of question papers in enlarged print for maths
and science and technology in Class X will be provided for the
 candidates having
 visual impairment.

The candidate may be permitted to draw the diagrams but it is not
mandatory for the candidates to do the calculations themselves.

However, this set of new rules will not only be applicable in the Boards
but also during the internal assessment. We have asked schools to
 follow these
instructions during the internal exams to strengthen inclusion of
physically challenged students into main stream, said Ganguly.

A separate column has been provided on the title page of the answer
books for indicating the category of physically challenged candidates so
 that these
answer books could be segregated for sending them separately to the
 regional office of the Board.

Subject: [AI] join us for Global Learn Day, Oct 8, 11 am IST

Hi, I have been a lurker on this list for some time now. Some of you
may know me from the time I spent as a volunteer at the NAB Delhi,
 teaching Visual Basic programming.

Global Learn Day is an annual 24-hour event on the Internet that seeks
to promote distance learning around the world. October 8, 2006, is
the tenth such occasion. The South Asia portion has a very special
keynote speaker, Dr. TV Raman, who is one of the most brilliant
programmers around the world. He is blind, and the creator of
emacspeak, the revolutionary tool that leverages the versatility of
emacs, to make available editing, browsing, mail, calendar and myriad
other facilities to the blind. He best exemplifies my belief, that the
best writers of software for the disabled are persons with the same
disability. Raman is also a great thinker. Example:

I have a somewhat contrarian answer when people allege
emacs/emacspeak has a steep learning curve. The usual expectation is
for one to hotly deny that somewhat bogus assertion. My usual response
though is I like steep learning curves -- it gets you ahead faster.

His talk begins at 5:30 AM GMT on October 8. This will be followed by
a presentation by Dr. Dipendra Manocha of the National Association for
the Blind. Together with him, and a little help from me, two blind
programming students, Avneesh and Suman, have successfully written
software for a soon to be released cutting-edge Daisy authoring tool,
called Obi. We will also talk about initiatives across the Indo-Pak
border to promote the use of ICTs by the blind.

Please join us for a discussion of how distance learning and other
Internet-related technologies can be of assistance to persons with
disabilities, and how to take these ideas further. Instructions on how
to participate are at http://ben300.com/GLDTEN/?p=52 . Other details
 at http://www.bfranklin.edu/

Please feel free to forward this to others who may be interested.

May I take this opportunity to ask how members of this list feel about
 Linux and emacspeak?

Would there be interest in a workshop at the NAB, where people who are
blind can learn to use Linux and emacspeak?

 Arun Mehta

[AI] A festival to break disability myths

2006-10-03 Thread Vikas Kapoor
A festival to break disability myths

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

Four-day event, `WE CARE Filmfest', to begin in New Delhi come December

NEW DELHI: To create public awareness about disability issues, artistes and
non-government organisations have increasingly realised, the medium of films
can prove to be a really effective tool, especially in a country where films
are part and parcel of many people's day-to-day life. In order to bring to
the fore the talents of filmmakers, two NGOs, Brotherhood and Tamana Welfare
Society, are holding a four-day film festival, `WE CARE Filmfest' at India
International Centre in New Delhi from December 3.

The festival seeks to provide the target audience the 25,000 foreign films and
documentaries that have been made on disability-related issues but have failed
to reach out to those they intend to benefit the most. The organisers say it
was indeed a pity that even in India there are about 40 films in both Hindi
and regional languages and about 50 documentaries that have barely managed to
reach their target audience.

Lending his voice to the cause is noted filmmaker Govind Nihalini who announced
the programme. The recent success of the film `Black' has demonstrated
that films can be a powerful medium for educating the people about disability
issues, stereotypes and misconceptions and also for creating awareness which
can give equal rights and opportunities to mentally and physically challenged
people, he said.

Stating that the name of the film festival, `WE CARE Filmfest', sums up the
sprit of this endeavour, the producer of many an acclaimed film such as
`Takshak'
and `Ardh Satya' and serials such as `Tamas' added that this festival should
not be looked as an event but as a movement.

The renowned filmmaker will also head the jury, which will include other
celebrities such as Nandita Das, Deepak Roy, Prof. P.K. Nair and Prof. M.M.
Alex.

Chairperson of the film festival and president of Tamana Welfare Society
Shayama Chona said the aim of the film festival is to focus on issues concerning
the mentally challenged and create a wider public awareness about disabilities
and the disabled people. The festival, she said, would also seek to make
the masses aware of the different activities that can help those with
disabilities and make their future bright. As for the award-winning films, she
said,
they would be taken to schools and colleges to educate the students who are the
future managers of the country.

Highlighting the concept of the film festivals on disability issues in India,
the director of the film festival, Satish Kapoor, said research had established
that that in most countries a majority of children with disabilities do not
know any disabled adults and, consequently, many have a difficult time in
imagining
their future. The audio-visual medium can provide them opportunities to observe
disabled adults undertaking a wide variety of activities, in effect, introducing
them to positive role models.

The aim of the film festival is to break down the myths, misconceptions,
prejudices and stereotype about disability by using the medium of films.

Entries have been invited from all over India in two categories -- films of up
to one minute and up to five minutes. And three awards each -- carrying a
cash component of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively -- would be
given away in both the categories.

Re: [AI] CBSE buffer for differently-abled

2006-10-03 Thread Subramani L
Dear Keshav:

Having tried to learn about the CBSE's attitude towards disabled
students, I had been to their regional office three years ago and was
told that the CBSE gives various optional subjects for PWD's. In them, I
didn't find science or math, though the regional director clarified that
the board doesn't primarily object, if students opt for these two
subjects.

However, making sure that if an answer sheet is completely worked out by
the students and they aren't helped by the scribes is something that
most individual schools and some board officials are concerned about.
This is largely due to their lack of understanding of a VI person and
the hard work he/she had to put in in order to get to some level. It is
also fact that most scribes, I mean most, won't co-operate if you ask
them to simply copy or work out the sum for themselves. But, most in the
board and in schools don't understand this. This is unfortunate and if
the determination of the CBSE is up to the level mentioned in the news
item posted in the list, I am sure it would make a difference.

 CBSE buffer for differently-abled

In a recent move, CBSE has asked the schools to provide a number of
concessions while marking the children with special needs as the board
 is all set to
provide special training to teachers to check these answer scripts.

It has been observed that physically and visually challenged children
are little less competent than the general kids on three subjects -
 maths, science
and English. However, we want them to be comfortable with these
subjects
and encourage to take up these subjects in future.

And the interest can be generated partly by providing them with good
marks in the exams, said CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly.

He further added: We want to sensitise the teachers about the ways
they
would evaluate and mark the answer scripts of these kids. A group of
 teachers will
be identified and special training will be provided to them to ensure
that a physically or visually challenged kid doesn't complain that
 he/she is not
 marked fairly.

In the recent set of rules, schools have been asked to exempt a
physically challenged child from studying third language up to Class
 VIII besides an additional
one hour will be given to such examinees.

Moreover, a separate set of question papers in enlarged print for
maths
and science and technology in Class X will be provided for the
 candidates having
 visual impairment.

The candidate may be permitted to draw the diagrams but it is not
mandatory for the candidates to do the calculations themselves.

However, this set of new rules will not only be applicable in the
Boards
but also during the internal assessment. We have asked schools to
 follow these
instructions during the internal exams to strengthen inclusion of
physically challenged students into main stream, said Ganguly.

A separate column has been provided on the title page of the answer
books for indicating the category of physically challenged candidates
so
 that these
answer books could be segregated for sending them separately to the
 regional office of the Board.

Re: [AI] join us for Global Learn Day, Oct 8, 11 am IST

2006-10-03 Thread Arun Mehta
Hi Geetha,
I also have a dual boot system (XP + Ubuntu), and was able to get
emacspeak working quite easily. It hasn't yet stopped :-)

Look forward to your participation in GLD.

Warmly,
Arun

As for your question about interest in using Linux and EmacSpeak:
I made an attempt to learn to use Linux and EmacSpeak about three years ago.
I installed Linux on my machine which already had Windows and used it as a
 dual boot machine.
With a great deal of help from the Linux list for the blind, I managed to
get EmacSpeak working with the DoubleTalk synthesizer for a few weeks.
However, it (and Linux) abruptly stopped working after a while. This could
probably be attributed to the complications involved in working with Linux
on a dual boot system, but I was unable to revive it as I never discovered
 the cause of its failure.

I would be greatly interested in a Linux-EmacSpeak workshop. Please keep the
 list posted.

 Regards,
 Geetha

  Arun Mehta
