[AI] Made in India PC for just about $ 100
The Hindu News Update Service News Update Service Sunday, April 29, 2007 : 1045 Hrs Sci. Tech. Made in India PC for just about $ 100 New Delhi, April 29 (PTI): While global computing giants like IBM and AMD are yet to give shape to their ambitious plans for a computer that costs 100 dollars or less, an Indian company has already set its eyes on 10 million potential customers with its up-and-running PC priced at Rs 4,500 only. The machine, launched by Chennai-based Novatium Solutions in 2004, costs a little over 100 dollars as of today in the US currency, thanks to the depreciation in the greenback, but it was priced at less than 100 dollars till a few months back. Novatium is targeting 10 million users in the next five years for this innovative product, company CEO Alok Singh told PTI from Chennai. The company has already started a successful commercial pilot for its NetPC computer in Chennai, he said. Since our trial was commercial in nature, we plan to stick to it. Going forward, we plan to expand into 6-7 big cities in the next year. Some of our immediate plans are going into two new cities in this quarter and two more in the next quarter, Singh said. Novatium was co-founded by US-based Analog Devices chairman Ray Stata, Netcore Solutions managing director Rajesh Jain and professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras. The company's NetPC works on a thin client concept. This is a small box and does not contain any software or application. It is linked to a central server, which hosts all applications. Network PC (NetPC) costs around 100 dollars (less than Rs 4,400) and along with a monthly subscription of around Rs 400, it provides you with internet connection and almost everything like authentic softwares, applications etc, Singh said. The use of mobile chips forms the basis of our low-cost computer model, he added. NetPC is probably one of the very few successful attempts when a company has been able to replicate a business model that combines philanthropy with sound economic sense. US-based business software giant Oracle Corporation's founder Larry Ellison had mooted the idea of a low-cost network computer way back in 1990, while Nicholas Negroponte, the former director of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Labs, has been long outlining designs for a sub-100 dollar computer. In 2005, chip maker AMD also ventured out in the low-cost computing space and similarly, while Intel is also investigating ways to make low-cost PCs available in Eastern Europe, India and other developing areas. When Negroponte, now heading the ambitious non-profit global project One Laptop Per Child, first unveiled his 100 dollar computer model in 2005, the computing legend Bill Gates scoffed it for not being a decent machine. Things have changed a lot since then and when Negroponte revealed the machine finally last week, it turned out to be running on Microsoft's operating system, Windows XP Starter Edition. However, the cost of the product coming out from One Laptop Per Child, designed for school children in developing countries, has been put at 175 dollars -- which is quite higher than that of the Indian NetPC product. According to experts, the price of softwares especially operating systems and expensive add-ons ramps up the price of desktop computers. This has a domino effect and when it finally arrives to the end-user it costs at least 300-400 dollars (Rs 14,000 -17,500). While TV and mobile phone penetration has gone up by leaps and bounds, computing is nowhere. A way to increase computer users in the country could be by making computers at a less cost and then offering the same at a lesser price, Singh said. Novatium devices support all the common network operating systems, namely, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Solaris 9 and 10, Red Hat Linux and other Linux distributions. The company has tied-up with various partners and is planning to ramp up operations soon, Singh said. Due to our business-model we had to tie up with partners that take care of content applications, server applications, he said, adding that these partners provide critical links for our personal computer network. The challenge for my company is to bring in new users and with the kind of targets we have set, we are confident more and more people will use NetPC, Singh said. [AI] Fw: Hearing loss.
- Original Message - From: P. Subramani To: Harish Kotian Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2007 4:32 AM Subject: Hearing loss. Dear Harish, Please find the information below on the above subject. I feel since most blind use headphones, this item could be useful. If you feel so, please send the information to the AI list. About 8 years ago, I saw a TV news program alerting that a college student came to an ear specialist. The attending doctor shook his head because he couldn't find the reason or cause of the young patient who was losing his hearing capability rapidly. The young man visited several hospitals seeking for help, because he nearly lost his hearing capability. Responding to the TV news, one of private research institute offered to study the young man in exchange with publication in a certain company advertisement. The research group conducted the case and concluded that the college student was a music lover who was using high fidelity loudspeaker amplifiers. Since the time he enjoyed listening jazz and pop music with the latest model of amplifier, he became the victim of modern life. Some amplifiers produce strange sounds or frequencies that destroy several parts of the body. Once again, the news went around and many inquires came to several research groups. Yes, we knew now that many headphone users among music lovers are reportedly having some hearing difficulties. We believe that some frequencies and loud sounds coming from the earphones make the eardrum to be thickened reducing hearing capabilities. Most patients who have difficulties in hearing are due to them using portable music players like the above photo, especially at high frequency and middle frequency of about 400 Hz and lower frequency of about 100 Hz below. We understood that eardrums do not respond nor vibrate due to the thickening of eardrums, and this is one of the new strains of illness in modern age. There is nothing wrong with portable music players. It is only because users set their music players to a high volume that can destroy their eardrum. That is how doctors comment. However, in some cases of music lover who lost almost all his hearing capability was not only because of loud sound. Some loud sound Hi-Fi amplifiers produce strange sounds or frequencies that destroy not only eardrums but also internal organs. Do you believe that? [AI] Mouse brain simulated on computer
Mouse brain simulated on computer BlueGene L under construction, IBM It takes a supercomputer to mimic a mouse brain US researchers have simulated half a virtual mouse brain on a supercomputer. The scientists ran a cortical simulator that was as big and as complex as half of a mouse brain on the BlueGene L supercomputer. In other smaller simulations the researchers say they have seen characteristics of thought patterns observed in real mouse brains. Now the team is tuning the simulation to make it run faster and to make it more like a real mouse brain. Life signs Brain tissue presents a huge problem for simulation because of its complexity and the sheer number of potential interactions between the elements involved. The three researchers, James Frye, Rajagopal Ananthanarayanan, and Dharmendra S Modha, laid out how they went about it in a very short research note entitled Towards Real-Time, Mouse-Scale Cortical Simulations. Half a real mouse brain is thought to have about eight million neurons each one of which can have up to 8,000 synapses, or connections, with other nerve fibres. Modelling such a system, the trio wrote, puts tremendous constraints on computation, communication and memory capacity of any computing platform. The team, from the IBM Almaden Research Lab and the University of Nevada, ran the simulation on a BlueGene L supercomputer that had 4,096 processors, each one of which used 256MB of memory. Using this machine the researchers created half a virtual mouse brain that had 8,000 neurons that had up to 6,300 synapses. The vast complexity of the simulation meant that it was only run for ten seconds at a speed ten times slower than real life - the equivalent of one second in a real mouse brain. On other smaller simulations the researchers said they had seen biologically consistent dynamical properties emerge as nerve impulses flowed through the virtual cortex. In these other tests the team saw the groups of neurons form spontaneously into groups. They also saw nerves in the simulated synapses firing in a ways similar to the staggered, co-ordinated patterns seen in nature. The researchers say that although the simulation shared some similarities with a mouse's mental make-up in terms of nerves and connections it lacked the structures seen in real mice brains. Imposing such structures and getting the simulation to do useful work might be a much more difficult task than simply setting up the plumbing. For future tests the team aims to speed up the simulation, make it more neurobiologically faithful, add structures seen in real mouse brains and make the responses of neurons and synapses more detailed. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6600965.stm Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. Hi Subramani Although I personally don't like to use a head phone, I rescently happend to see a headphone which was less irritating. The headphone rests on your ear, and one has to wear it, similarly, to wearing a spectacles. You can also wear both the spectacles and this earphone as well. Re: [AI] Fw: Hearing loss.
I don't know any research on this, but a similar concept (repetitive stress injury [RSI]) is valid we all know, so can it be valid for hearing as well? Artificial speech is relatively new and number of users is so small, that I doubt that there is going to be a viability for a long term research on this. Such problems may be detected only by a long term observation of ear drums via MRI scans. We all use artificial speech almost the entire day, and the effects could be non reversible. Another aspect is that it might not be artificial speech, it could just be the frequency with which we hear the speech. In day to day conversation frequency and intensity is never so high, unless we get in to a DJ or super market scenario. I don't have any data on this, but my instinct tells me that there is some effect of this on me. [AI] XO Laptop: Child's Play
XO Laptop: Child's Play Apr 29, 2007 The hardest thing about learning to use the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project's XO notebook PC is finding the right way to twist its antenna ears and open the display. Once you can see the screen, just follow the icons to write a note, snap a photo or compose a tune. OLPC invited analysts and reporters to play with the B2 version of its computers during a press conference at their Cambridge, Massachusetts, offices last week. The group plans to begin mass production in September despite announcing they will now charge $175 for each of what had been the ballyhooed hundred-dollar laptops. That price is still far below the $500 price tag on the most basic commercial notebook in U.S. retail shops, a discount that OLPC hopes will allow developing nations to buy XO laptops in mass quantities and supply them to rural school children. With its curved surfaces, bright green plastic shell and puppy-ear WiFi antennas, the physical design of the XO is easy to carry. OLPC President Walter Bender held his 3-pound XO aloft as he spoke to reporters, his fingers wrapped around the laptop's integrated suitcase-type handle. Even generating electricity for this laptop feels like a game. OLPC designers have cut out the iconic hand-crank that was attached to the side of earlier versions like the engine starter on a Model T Ford. But they still offer that charger mounted on a USB cable as an optional accessory for users without access to reliable electrical sockets. Other power choices include a pull-cord that delivers an hour of use for 6 minutes of pulling, a foot pedal, a car battery adapter and a solar panel the size of a cafeteria tray. In addition to finding creative power sources, OLPC designers have traded computing speed for lower cost and longer battery life. Instead of Microsoft Windows Vista they use Red Hat's Fedora Linux; instead of an 80GB hard drive they use a 1GB NAND flash drive; and instead of a 3GHz dual-core processor, the B2 XO uses a 400MHz Geode GX 533 from Advanced Micro Devices. Intro to Apps In practice, the Geode chip provides plenty of power to launch applications like paint, calculator and newsreader RSS feeds. A user can click on the drum-shaped icon, launching the TamTam music composition program and producing a symphony of duck quacks, infant giggles and car horns. Once the laughter stops, he can click on the camera icon, and snap photos and videos by pointing the laptop at subjects. A mosaic-shaped icon starts a quick game of Tetris, and the laptop screen be rotated and used as a tablet for reading an illustrated children's book written in Farsi. However, with all those applications running at once, the XO can begin to respond sluggishly. The experience can be disorienting for a user accustomed to the speed of a business notebook, but a quick reboot returns the XO to its original state. Future versions may perform better, since OLPC will use a faster, 433MHz Geode LX 700 in the B2-2 and future versions. Instead of the hierarchical drop-down menus familiar to Windows users, the Sugar interface on the XO lists applications as icons on the screen, arrayed like numbers around a clock face. And a grown man could find it difficult to type a 500-word story on the cramped keys. The keyboard keys are very close together -- rendered on the XO, that sentence came out as the keybosrd keysare very clsetogether. OLPC replies to that criticism by pointing out that the XO is not designed for modern office use, but for three universal traits that every kid has in common: learning, socializing and creating, Bender said. That is why the XO's desktop page shows a graphic map of WiFi signals up to 2 kilometers away, allowing all the XO laptops in a village to share drawings, notes, photographs, and musical compositions. The mesh of laptops could also share a single Internet connection, allowing them to use a distant ISP or a single schoolhouse server. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,131330-pg,1/article.html Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Google Declares Personalized Home Page Glitch Solved
Google Declares Personalized Home Page Glitch Solved Apr 29, 2007 Google Declares Personalized Home Page Glitch Solved Update: Google has finally solved a technical glitch on its Personalized Home Page service that rattled some users. Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service Friday, April 27, 2007 1:00 PM PDT Google Inc. has finally solved a technical glitch on its Personalized Home Page service that rattled an undetermined number of users. Anecdotal evidence gathered from discussion forums indicates that Google began rolling out a fix to the problem at around 3 a.m. ET on Friday, almost 24 hours after the problem erupted, although the glitch seems to still be affecting some users at press time early Friday afternoon ET. The company didn't declare the problem solved until almost 2 p.m. ET Friday, about 32 hours after the first problem reports started surfacing. A number of Google users had difficulty accessing their settings and preferences on the personalized version of their homepages over the past day, a spokeswoman wrote via e-mail. Users should have their personalized homepages restored at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our users. We know how important Google Personalized Homepage is to our users, so we take issues like this very seriously. In the statement, Google didn't disclose how many users were affected, nor did it offer an explanation of what happened. This affected a relatively small group of users, and we believe this to be an isolated incident, the spokeswoman wrote. Personalized Home Page is a free service that lets users turn Google.com into a customized portal by adding to it syndicated content feeds, as well as gadget applications, turning it into a user's hub for Web content, online services and applications. Florian Brunner, a student at HTL Leonding technical and vocational college in Leonding, Austria, was among those affected and said the problem was more annoying than disruptive. I can work without the page, but I can't live without it. All my important information is on one site. Fast and simple, Brunner wrote in an e-mail interview. With the Personalized Home Page, Brunner can access multiple Google services without going to their individual sites. The problem, of apparently significant proportions, erupted at around 6 a.m. ET on Thursday, when angry users began flocking to discussion forums to report that their home pages had either reverted to old versions or to their original default settings. Users complained about lost productivity and missing data, but throughout Friday morning many reported in discussion forums that their Google home pages had been restored, although some said the problem hadn't been fixed for them as late as 1:14 pm ET . In a number of forum postings, users called on Google to offer an explanation for the problem and to let them save their Personalized Home Page settings to their PCs, so that the settings can be restored even if they get wiped out on Google servers. Episodes such as this one have affected other Google services recently, leading some to question the company's ability to provide robust availability for its online services, particularly for those for which it offers uptime guarantees, like the paid version of Google Apps, the suite of hosted communication and collaboration applications for businesses of all sizes. Earlier this week, Google backtracked on a plan to do a 13-hour upgrade to its Google Calendar service, which is part of Google Apps, apparently after a significant number of Google Apps administrators expressed deep concern at the possible impact of the maintenance work on the service's availability during a weekday and during U.S. work hours. Incidents like the one affecting Personalized Home Page also weaken the position of backers of delivering applications as hosted services. Google is one of the most vocal proponents of the software-as-a-service model, which rivals the traditional approach of having users install applications on their own PCs and servers, of which Microsoft Corp. is a clear example. In March, the Gmail portion of Google Apps suffered three major outages, affecting even subscribers who have signed up for the fee-based version of the suite, which guarantees 99.9 percent uptime. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,131312-pg,1/article.html Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Google Desktop 5 Speaks 29 Languages
Google Desktop 5 Speaks 29 Languages Apr 29, 2007 Google Inc. took a step closer on Thursday to being able to search everything: its desktop search application is now available in 29 languages, including Hindi, the company announced. Seven weeks after launching the English-language version of Google Desktop 5, the company localized the software in 29 languages, including French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, Russian -- and Hindi, the first time a version of the application has been offered in that language. Google Desktop 5 is an application for Windows Vista, XP or 2000 that, once installed on a PC, can be used to search the hard disk for documents using an interface similar to that of Google's Internet search engine. Like its Internet counterpart, it can be used to preview the contents of documents without having to launch the application used to create them. Version 5 also includes updated gadgets, small applications that can display new email, weather forecasts, diary entries or a to-do list. The company faces renewed competition on the desktop since Microsoft Corp.'s introduction of new desktop search functionality in Vista, its latest Windows upgrade. Microsoft also offers desktop search for Windows XP as a free download. With Version 5, Google tried to play on users' fears about the security of Microsoft's browser and OS, introducing an early warning system designed to protect users from phishing attempts and Web sites harboring malicious code. Google Desktop was itself the subject of two warnings by security researchers in February. However, Google software engineer Xiyuan Xia gave no indication in his posting to the official Google Desktop blog on Thursday whether the new localized versions patch all the reported flaws. Google also released a version of the desktop search application for Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X operating system three weeks ago. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,131296-pg,1/article.html Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. Re: [AI] Fw: Hearing loss.
Hi Pranav I did read in the past of research stating that headphones adversely effect hearing. There are basically 3 issues here. firstly is the amplitude that is the volume level that can be damaging. The second issue is that of frequency. There is more energy carried in higher frequencies. The third issue is that of ressonnence. The energy is fully focused on this frequency. Each speaker or headphone may have different resonnence frequency. That is chiefly depended on the construction of the device, material used and the final assembly of the device. Sound is also a form of energy and when one listens on a headphone the there is practically no distance gap between the source of energyand the ear drum which is the target. Nature has not factored for it in its origin design smile. Hai Harish: Can you give more details on the headphone you had mentioned in your mail --the maker, cost and if it's available in India. Also, is resonance such a damaging thing even if the headphone has volume control? Though I have been using headphones for three years, almost continuously, I have taken one small measure of precaution --though I don't know to date if that can be a precaution at all. I cover my ears completely with cotton, so that the sound doesn't hit the drums straight away.
