[AI] The story of Louis Braille's life, told in a lively style
The story of Louis Braille's life, told in a lively style Louis Braille www.afb.org Louis Braille (1809-1852) Six dots. Six bumps. Six bumps in different patterns, like constellations, spreading out over the page. What are they? Numbers, letters, words. Who made this code? None other than Louis Braille, a French 12-year-old, who was also blind. And his work changed the world of reading and writing, forever. Louis was from a small town called Coupvray, near Paris-he was born on January 4 in 1809. Louis became blind by accident, when he was 3 years old. Deep in his Dad's harness workshop, Louis tried to be like his Dad, but it went very wrong; he grabbed an awl, a sharp tool for making holes, and the tool slid and hurt his eye. The wound got infected, and the infection spread, and soon, Louis was blind in both eyes. All of a sudden, Louis needed a new way to learn. He stayed at his old school for two more years, but he couldn't learn everything just by listening. Things were looking up when Louis got a scholarship to the Royal Institution for Blind Youth in Paris, when he was 10. But even there, most of the teachers just talked at the students. The library had 14 huge books with raised letters that were very hard to read. Louis was impatient. Then in 1821, a former soldier named Charles Barbier visited the school. Barbier shared his invention called "night writing," a code of 12 raised dots that let soldiers share top-secret information on the battlefield without even having to speak. Unfortunately, the code was too hard for the soldiers, but not for 12-year-old Louis! Louis trimmed Barbier's 12 dots into 6, ironed out the system by the time he was 15, then published the first-ever braille book in 1829. But did he stop there? No way! In 1837, he added symbols for math and music. But since the public was skeptical, blind students had to study braille on their own. Even at the Royal Institution, where Louis taught after he graduated, braille wasn't taught until after his death. Braille began to spread worldwide in 1868, when a group of British men, now known as the Royal National Institute for the Blind, took up the cause. Now practically every country in the world uses braille. Braille books have double-sided pages, which saves a lot of space. Braille signs help blind people get around in public spaces. And, most important, blind people can communicate independently, without needing print. Louis proved that if you have the motivation, you can do incredible things. Where Can I Find a Picture of Louis Braille? We hear this question a lot-why are there no photographs of Louis Braille on the Braille Bug site? We looked long and hard for a photograph of Louis Braille. But he died in 1852, and at that time photography had been around for only 13 years. It was still a relatively difficult and rare process. Also, Louis Braille's code for reading wasn't adopted by the school where he taught until eight years before he died. France didn't officially adopt Braille's system until two years after he died. It wasn't until 1890 that the code was adopted in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, Spain, and Scotland-and it took even longer to reach the United States. Louis Braille really became more famous after his death! Maybe people didn't think of taking a photo of him while he was alive because they didn't know how famous he would later become. But someone did think to take an old type of "photo" called a daguerreotype shortly after his death. Here is a portrait of Louis Braille that was based on the daguerreotype. You can see this image, as well as others, in a new biography from National Braille Press entitled Louis Braille: A Touch of Genius . As the author notes, "This is the visage of a dead man; in life, he kept his eyes open." The only other image we have of Louis Braille is a sculpted bust, which can be found at the school in Paris where he taught, the Royal Institution for Blind Youth. It's hard to remember in these days of digital cameras and instant pictures how young photography actually is. Sculpture has been around for thousands of years-photography for only 165 years! - The Braille Bug - What is Braille? What When you first look at something written in braille, all you see (or feel) is a jumble of dots! However, like any other code, braille is based on a logical system. Once you understand it, you'll be able to read and write braille easily. That's because braille is not a language, it's just another way to read and write English (or any other language, such as Japanese). [AI] She proved that she can do it`
Date:03/01/2008 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2008/01/03/stories/2008010350170100.htm Front Page She proved that she can do it Divya Gandhi Minda Cox was born with the dice stacked against her - Photo: K. Gopinathan DOWN MEMORY LANE: Minda and Catherine Cox look at her picture taken just before she was taken to the U.S. two decades ago. Bangalore: The memories come flooding back to Catherine Cox. Nearly 20 years ago, she had come to Ashraya children's home eager to see Swapna, whom she was to adopt. The bright-eyed seven-month-old had made news as the little girl with no limbs, relinquished by her parents to a hospital in Manipal when she was just a day old. "I saw her on her cot in a little room here," says Ms. Cox pointing to the building. "Somebody had her all dressed up. She smiled at me at first - and then burst into tears when I came near!" Ms. Cox recalls. "I was just not used to strangers, mom," the 19-year-old quips in her American twang, before turning back to her laptop where a slideshow of her artwork is running. Minda (the name given to her by her adoptive mother) now a budding artist, lives in Bolivar, Missouri, with four other children adopted by Ms. Cox, who is a priest. First visit This is Minda's first visit to her home State. Crowded around her are visitors to Ashraya - children and their adoptive parents, social workers and friends - gathered here for a reunion on the 25th anniversary of the organisation. Self-portrait A self-portrait shows a younger Minda dextrously painting, brush held in the crook of her neck. "Every one of her watercolours and charcoal sketches has been sold," says Emily Frost, her art teacher. "She spends eight to 10 hours painting. I have never seen anyone with such determination." Liberating art Art, says Minda, does for her the things that her disability prevents her from doing. "I cannot leap or run. but my artwork can do all that." She draws our attention towards an abstract charcoal sketch, called "wheelchair." The wheel and broken chain, she explains, represent the boundaries and freedom that her wheelchair afford. Teachers actually discouraged her from painting - they told her: "you cannot make a living with it," says Ms. Frost. "That is when I started holding classes for her. And now, two years later, every one of them is sold." Emily's husband Jim Frost, also her teacher at the South West Baptist University, speaks of how she often does not relate to children her age because "she asks herself questions children her age do not ask". She has empathy for people that only her disability could have given her, he adds. Tour Minda has recently been busy on tours around the country, talking to children about disability. Coming back to India "is like a dream" says Minda. And her yearning to find her biological mother is unconcealed. "I would like to know what she looks like, who she is. I want her to know I'm doing well. I thank her for giving me a chance to live," Minda added. To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. Sir Thank you very much for your information, it was enlighting for me. HUMANWARE'S NEW VICTOR READER TALKING BOOK PLAYER FOR NISO AND DAISY BOOKS by Gerry Chevalier (Editor's Note: Gerry Chevalier is HumanWare's Victor Reader Product Manager.) At the ACB convention in July 2007 HumanWare, the world's leading supplier of the Victor Reader line of CD-based digital talking book players, unveiled its first flash-based portable talking book player, the Victor Reader Stream. The Stream is the result of extensive research in terms of design, usability, and user testing. The Stream is designed to play NISO Z39.86 books, DAISY books and MP3 books and music. NISO Z39.86 is the format that will be used for the new NLS digital talking books. NLS is the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped which is transitioning its four-track cassette talking book service to a new digital service. At the July ACB convention NLS announced that, beginning August 2007, it will expand its trial of download digital talking books to include all NLS patrons who are registered for NLS service by their local library, who have a computer and high-speed Internet connection to download the books, and who also have an NLS-authorized digital book player capable of playing the NISO books downloaded from the NLS server. Only residents of the United States or American citizens living abroad who are unable to read or use standard print materials as a result of a temporary or permanent visual or physical limitation may receive NLS audio book services. Each individual must be certified first before accessing the NLS audio book services. The new Victor Reader Stream will be able to play downloaded NLS NISO books as soon as NLS authorizes the player to do so. NLS NISO books are encrypted and any digital player must be authorized by NLS with a decryption code to play the NLS books. HumanWare has discussed the player authorization process with NLS. The development of the web form and NLS operational procedures are currently under way. As soon as NLS concludes this process, Victor Reader Stream users will be able to register for NLS download book service through a simple web form on the NLS web site. Once the patron is registered for NLS download book service, HumanWare will be able to supply him/her with the required software decryption code to install on the Stream. The decryption code will be sent from HumanWare through a simple e-mail attachment. NLS also announced that it will further expand its digital service in 2008 to begin sending digital recorded books on special cartridges mailed to its members. Included in the Stream package is a short USB cable to allow the future book cartridges to be connected to the Stream and copied to the Stream's SD memory card. For users who prefer to play the cartridge directly on the player, HumanWare will sell an optional book cartridge holder that will clip to the back of the Stream. As with download books, the cartridge books may only be played on an authorized Stream player equipped with the decryption code. As the newest member of the family of Victor Reader digital talking book players, the Stream offers the same powerful and simple to use user interface made popular by the Victor Reader Classic+ and Wave players used by thousands worldwide. Stream users will find the well known four-arrow navigation keys of the Classic+ and Wave allowing book navigation by chapter and section without the need to memorize complex key combinations. As well, the Stream's telephone-style keypad provides advanced book navigation functions such as entering bookmarks, or jumping directly to a specified page or heading. The Stream also has the popular Key Describer feature of other Victor Readers, allowing you to press a key anytime to announce its function. The Stream is an ideal companion to the future NLS player because it does everything the NLS player will do, but in a pocket-size package. Once the player is authorized, not only will you be able to play and navigate the NLS books on cartridges but you will also have access to the NLS download books. The Stream has a USB port to connect to your computer so you can transfer downloaded books from your PC to the Stream's SD flash memory card. In addition to the ability to read NLS books, Stream will also play recorded DAISY 2.02 books from other DAISY producers, including RFB&D. However, every day more and more books and content are becoming available in non-recorded electronic text formats. Stream also has built-in computer text-to-speech to listen to the text portion of full text/full audio books or the text-o

[AI] Hector - the supercomputer set to go live
The Hindu News Update Service News Update Service Wednesday, January 2, 2008 : 1635 Hrs Sci. & Tech. Hector - the supercomputer set to go live GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE By James Randerson in London GBP113m HECToR will help British researchers simulate everything from climate change to financial markets To the untrained eye, it looks like a sports hall half filled with neatly arranged burgundy Ikea storage units. But the series of heavy, clunking security doors that must be navigated to get inside, and the staff's insistence on secrecy about its precise location, indicate that this is a place of national importance. Meet the University of Edinburgh's HECToR, Britain's newest and faster supercomputer, which scientists and engineers plan to use for modelling everything from climate change to financial markets. The GBP113m publicly funded project, the full name of which is High-End Computing Terascale Resource, will be opened officially later this month by the chancellor, Alistair Darling. HECToR's computing power is astonishing. Its calculation speed is equivalent to every person on the planet performing 10,000 calculations every second - in computing terms that is the same as 12,000 standard desktop computers operating at full tilt. HECToR's memory is also impressive. It is 3,200 times larger than that of a top-of-the-range iPod 160GB. According to Professor, Arthur Trew, who is in charge of the project at a site in the Scottish countryside, supercomputers such as HECToR are allowing scientists to approach problems in a radically new way. Traditionally, science has advanced through theory and experiment - the theorists come up with testable ideas and experimenters design experiments to see whether they are right. But for many areas of science this does not work. In climate research, for instance, it is impossible to do the experiments. In fluid dynamics - the complex field that governs the way, for example, that air flows across a wing - the mathematical equations governing what is going on are impossible to solve. That is where HECToR's brain comes in. Scientists can use it to run models of the real world. One application is in aircraft design. By better understanding the flow of air across a wing, scientists are able to design shapes that will minimise drag and increase lift, making aircraft more efficient. The current generation of passenger jets were built before computers were fast enough to do this sort of modelling. Professor Jacek Gondzio at the University of Edinburgh plans to use HECToR to model financial markets. He is working on finding the safest and most profitable investment strategies for pension funds, based on uncertain information about the future of the world economy. "Uncertainty needs to be modelled by multiple scenarios and in order to reflect reality this automatically expands problems to large sizes," he said. The approach means building computer models that predict the outcome of different investment strategies based on huge numbers of different scenarios for the future of the economy. This allows Gondzio to select the best investments that will pay off most of the time. A faster computer also means better models. "The ability to solve larger problems means the ability for more accurate modelling," said Gondzio. "You can either do the planning for more years ahead or you can have a more detailed description of scenarios." Up to now, most supercomputer modelling has been done by physicists, engineers and chemists. But the improved hardware is now making biological modelling possible. One research group will use HECToR to understand how molecules enter cells through the cell membrane. That could lead to more effective drugs. Another group is modelling the electrical activity of the heart to understand how best to intervene when it goes wrong. Trew said that UK academic scientists would be given priority on HECToR, which they can access via the internet. If their research proposal is good enough it is free to use. "Scientific excellence is the number one driver," he said. The cost of the project has risen since HECToR was first conceived. In November, a report by the Commons public accounts committee into the costs of the UK's 10 flagship science projects criticised their management. But HECToR emerged reasonably well. It has cost GBP5.6m less than the GBP65m estimate to build, but its annual running costs have jumped from the GBP5.4m estimate to GBP8.2m. Trew said this was because electricity prices in the UK had nearly doubled since the planning stages. "I think the initial estimates for power costs were unrealistically low, but power does cost an awful lot more today than it did To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] SMS chokes telecom network
Date:02/01/2008 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2008/01/02/stories/2008010257350100.htm Front Page Suresh Krishnamoorthy A File photo Record number of calls made on New Year's eve. HYDERABAD: As midnight approached on Monday, New Year's eve, telecommunication networks struggled to handle the swelling numbers of voice calls and staggering volumes of 'sms'. Getting a voice call through on Monday evening was tough even with the anticipatory arrangements that telecom companies made by having more access ports to allow calls. Jayalakshmi, a mother in Chennai, told her son here that it took her half-an-hour of repeated dialling before she could hear the voices of her granddaughter, daughter-in-law and son. Similar was the experience of many callers. When mobile lines appear to have choked, people tried the landlines and several of them fell back on the 'sms'. To add to the subscribers'woes, free 'sms' were discontinued on December 31 as the GSM operators Vodafone and AirTel went into what they termed, 'special blackout day' mode. The TRAI has identified 10 days in a year when GSM operators can set aside existing tariff plans and charge special rates only for sms. They include Diwali, Christmas, Valentine's, Friendship Day and New Year. Regardless of the tariff plan they opt, subscribers have to pay Re. 1, Rs. 2 and Rs. 5 respectively for local, national and international sms. This caught some subscribers unawares for they failed to read the fine print in the form of a message sms from the telecom company, alerting them that they would pay more for sms on New Year's eve. When contacted, Hamir Bakshi, Chief Operating Officer, AP, said there was no 'fine print' at all because TRAI had actually authorised them to do so. T. Elango, COO, AirTel, AP, said that the option was used on the given days only because given the cheap rates of sms, people using it in bulk generally tend to choke the system. Tata Teleservices Chief Operating Officer, AP Telecom Circle, S. Ramakrishna said that in the 24 hours from Sunday night, they had handled 31 lakh outgoing and 26 lakh incoming sms. And this pertains to only the six lakh-odd CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile connections that it has in the twin cities. [AI] RCom to move court on spectrum issue
The Hindu News Update Service News Update Service Wednesday, January 2, 2008 : 1635 Hrs RCom to move court on spectrum issue New Delhi, (PTI): CDMA mobile-operator 'Reliance Communications', whose Chairman, Anil Ambani, had accused GSM operators of hoarding spectrum, is expected on Thursday to move telecom tribunal TDSAT seeking return of excess air waves from operators using the rival technology. RCom is likely to raise the issue of GSM operators hoarding excess spectrum to the tune of over 52 MHz, that too having got it free and beyond their eligibility limit of 6.2 MHz, according to sources. The company is of the view that the excess spectrum should be returned and re-farmed and equally distributed among all operators. Upset over the government's decision to allot additional spectrum based on TRAI's formula, the company had also served a legal notice to the government to freeze allocation of air waves to existing players. RCom has maintained that the government should enforce the spectrum allocation norms prescribed by the Telecom Engineering Centre, whose report was accepted by DoT in principle. TEC norms were much more stringent than those proposed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. TEC had raised subscriber base by up to 15 times, while TRAI had suggested up to six times increase in user base for becoming eligible for additional frequency. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court would on Thursday hear a case filed by Cellular Operators Association of India against TDSAT's interim order not to stay the spectrum allocation process. TDSAT, in its interim order, had declined to stay the issuance of spectrum by the government, which would allow To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe.
