Hello, Whenever I am trying to use ctrl+a or ctrl+shift +left arrow or ctrl+shift +right arrow to select text in any programme, say notepad or word, the entire page is getting right aligned and the text is reversed from right to left. Suppose, the word access will become ssecca. It is happening only on my home computer having windows xp sp2. However, I faced the same problem on another pc having windows xp home. What may be the problem? I have faced it for quite some time, but never bothered about it. As soon as I found it on another pc, I thought, there may be a solution for it. There is no problem if I can select text avoiding the ctrl key. Navigation keys like ctrl+arrow key is working all right. Best regards, Amiyo. [AI] Tongue Drive System Lets Persons With Disabilities Operate Powered Wheelchairs, Computers
ScienceDaily (June 30, 2008) - A new assistive technology developed by engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology could help individuals with severe disabilities lead more independent lives. The novel system allows individuals with disabilities to operate a computer, control a powered wheelchair and interact with their environments simply by moving their tongues. This device could revolutionize the field of assistive technologies by helping individuals with severe disabilities, such as those with high-level spinal cord injuries, return to rich, active, independent and productive lives, said Maysam Ghovanloo, an assistant professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Ghovanloo developed the system with graduate student Xueliang Huo. The tongue-operated assistive technology, called the Tongue Drive system, was described on June 29 at the 2008 Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. An article about this system is also scheduled to appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. To operate the Tongue Drive system, potential users only need to be able to move their tongues. Attaching a small magnet, the size of a grain of rice, to an individual's tongue by implantation, piercing or tissue adhesive allows tongue motion to direct the movement of a cursor across a computer screen or a powered wheelchair around a room. We chose the tongue to operate the system because unlike hands and feet, which are controlled by the brain through the spinal cord, the tongue is directly connected to the brain by a cranial nerve that generally escapes damage in severe spinal cord injuries or neuromuscular diseases, said Ghovanloo, who started working on this project about three years ago at North Carolina State University. Tongue movements are also fast, accurate and do not require much thinking, concentration or effort. Movement of the magnetic tracer attached to the tongue is detected by an array of magnetic field sensors mounted on a headset outside the mouth or on an orthodontic brace inside the mouth. The sensor output signals are wirelessly transmitted to a portable computer, which can be carried on the user's clothing or wheelchair. The sensor output signals are processed to determine the relative motion of the magnet with respect to the array of sensors in real-time. This information is then used to control the movements of a cursor on the computer screen or to substitute for the joystick function in a powered wheelchair. The system can potentially capture a large number of tongue movements, each of which can represent a different user command. A unique set of specific tongue movements can be tailored for each individual based on the user's abilities, oral anatomy, personal preferences and lifestyle. An individual could potentially train our system to recognize touching each tooth as a different command, explained Ghovanloo. The ability to train our system with as many commands as an individual can comfortably remember is a significant advantage over the common sip-n-puff device that acts as a simple switch controlled by sucking or blowing through a straw. The Tongue Drive system is also non-invasive and does not require brain surgery like some of the brain-computer interface technologies. Ghovanloo's group recently completed trials in which six able-bodied individuals tested the Tongue Drive system. Each participant defined six tongue commands that would substitute for computer mouse tasks -- left, right, up and down pointer movements and single- and double-click. For each trial, the individual began by training the system. During the five-minute training session, the individual repeated each of the six designated tongue movements 10 times. During the testing session, the user moved his or her tongue to one of the predefined command positions and the mouse pointer started moving in the selected direction. To move the cursor faster, users could hold their tongue in the position of the issued command to gradually accelerate the pointer until it reached a maximum velocity. Results of the computer access test by novice users with the current Tongue Drive prototype showed a response time of less than one second with almost 100 percent accuracy for the six individual commands. This is equivalent to an information transfer rate of approximately 150 bits per minute, which is much faster than the bandwidth of most brain-computer interfaces, according to Ghovanloo. The researchers have also tested the ability of twelve able-bodied individuals to operate an electric-powered wheelchair with the Tongue Drive system. ScienceDaily (July 2, 2008) - What began as a college course project to design therapeutic toys has resulted in the first toys of their kind, designed as therapy for children with cerebral palsy (CP). CP is a disorder that affects the development of the brain and the motor system, often causing muscle weakness and paralysis. Physical and occupational therapy have been shown to be effective treatments in improving function, however, Karen Kerman, M.D., director of the pediatric rehabilitation center at Hasbro Children's Hospital, wanted to find a way to incorporate physical therapy into the normal activity of children -- play. Kerman noted that while there are currently toys that address the cognitive realm, nothing existed to address the unique needs of CP patients -- more than 800 in Rhode Island and nationally, between 750,000 and one million. Kerman approached the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and explained her idea -- to create toys that would allow children with CP to obtain vital therapy in a fun way. Kerman says, The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust was wonderful, immediately seeing the advantages of such a project, and their support allowed us to go ahead with our idea. With funding available, she approached her colleague, Joseph (Trey) Crisco, Ph.D., director of the bioengineering lab in the department of orthopedics at Rhode Island Hospital and a professor of orthopedics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Crisco was teaching an engineering course that combined industrial science students from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and engineering studies students at Brown University. The pair believed this was a perfect forum to bring creative minds together to create some prototypes for new therapeutic toys. Thus, Toys and Technology for Rehabilitation was formed. Kerman says the project has the power to harness the benefits of play, and may have many implications in the future. They approached Khipra Nichols, B.I.D., professor of industrial design at RISD, and in the fall of 2006, the students in Crisco's class were challenged to design therapeutic toys. At the end of the course they then applied to the Rhode Island Science and Advisory Technology Council (STAC) and obtained a grant providing additional funding for the project. Specifically, they were hoping to develop toy controls for games that would rely on the use of the wrist and forearms for children with CP who lack the fine motor skills normally required of hand-held game controllers. The team collaborated with Susan D'Andrea, Ph.D., of Afferent Corporation, David Durfee, Ph.D., of Bay Computer Associates to further develop the ideas born out of the students' assignment, and then worked with Cornerstone Prototype Development. Crisco says, There were a lot of design iterations, but in the end, there were about 15 prototypes and concepts that came out of the class. The efforts were then focused on designing a hand-held control that could be used by the CP patients as both fun and therapeutic and would increase the use of the affected limb, helping to strengthen the muscles. At the same time, the researchers wanted to be able to obtain information from the use of the toys. So the controls are equipped with data logging capabilities that allow the researchers to study the extent of use and the arm movements and also measure the outcome. The project has now reached its study phase, during which 20 children with CP between ages 5 and 12 will be enrolled. Each child in the study will be provided with a toy to be used at home as part of their normal play. Once a month, their progress will be charted, looking at markers for functional gain. We are proud to be able to support the innovative work done by Hasbro Children's Hospital to develop interactive toys that can actually serve as rehabilitative therapy for children with cerebral palsy, said Eileen Howard Dunn, Vice President, CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. CVS Caremark All Kids Can focuses on the need for children to Learn, Play and Succeed. The therapeutic robotic toys currently being studied at Hasbro Children's Hospital are in line with our mission as they can engage children with CP in a fun and stimulating play experience that also provides them with positive physical therapy benefits. Kerman and Crisco believe that this is a big step in physical therapy for CP patients, however, they also believe that the information obtained for this study may even have future implications for other patients, including those who have suffered a stroke. Kerman says, Our goal is not only to provide rehabilitation, but to reshape the brain after injury to improve function. We believe we can do that. The toys were unveiled during an open house event on Monday, June 16, showing controllers for slot car racing, remote control toys, and moving stuffed animals, all manipulated by the new rehabilitation controllers. Rajesh, Assuming your guidelines are followed then: 1. What if I sign a cheque and give it to a vendor. 2. The bank knows I am blind so demands a bank official to attest my signature? 3. Or, what if I pay a utility bill via a cheque? I appreciate where you are coming from but we will need to find an alternative solution. [AI] Sudden Blindness (A New Strain of Maladies)
Sudden Blindness (A New Strain of Maladies) by: Junji Takano One day, your vision suddenly falls to nearly zero sight. What happened? You may have a Retinal Disease. Millions of people around the world especially those who are over 50 years old are affected from this dreadful eye disease. In the case of Mr. Machida, 45 years old, he noticed that he suddenly had hard time reading newspapers. All the characters are blurred with his eyes. He visited his family physician, but was told that he just needs some rest. He rested for three days but noticed no improvement with his eyesight, so he decided to visit an ophthalmologist. There he was told that he would be blind if he leaves it the way it is for another week or so. So he was treated with laser photocoagulation. We think that loss of vision usually gets worse gradually. But there are cases where sudden loss of vision occurs within a few weeks to a month. It is recommended that you take an eye exam at least once a year. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF VISION LOSS? list of 3 items 1. Lens - light-focusing part of the eye 2. Retina - receives the image from the lens 3. Optic nerves - sends the image to the brain list end The most common causes of vision loss among the elderly are cataract and glaucoma. While cataract is caused by the cloudy lens of the eye, loss of vision in glaucoma is caused by optic nerve problems due to abnormally high pressure within the eyeball. However, in the case of Mr. Machida, it was neither cataract nor glaucoma but a retinal disease. MACULAR DEGENERATION AND DIABETIC RETINOPATHY At the center of the retina is a small depression from 2.5 to 3 mm in diameter. This is known as the yellow spot, or macula, one of the most vital parts of the eye. Progressive destruction of the macula will result to Macular Degeneration that impairs central vision, which can make reading and driving impossible. Retina Why do we need immediate clinical diagnosis? Because it might lead to total blindness caused by retinal bleeding. In the case of Mr. Machida, he also had diabetes complications. Here, we do like to let you know that the majority of eye patients are diabetic and we notice that they are heavy cigarette smokers. Damage to the retina caused by complications of diabetes is called Diabetic Retinopathy. Eye laser treatment like the laser photocoagulation is usually performed for diabetic retinopathy. The laser seals or destroys the abnormal, leaking blood vessels in the retina. One of its drawbacks is that the laser damages some of the light-sensitive nerve cells in the retina and macula that often results in some permanent vision loss. However, the vision loss caused by the laser treatment is mild compared with the vision loss that may be caused if left untreated. There may be some pain during the laser treatment, but for mild case of symptoms, there may be no pain at all. Why do you need this kind of treatment? It is the safest and fastest treatment today. HOW TO KNOW THE SYMPTOMS? Some people experience strange eyesight such as difficulties to see one particular direction, difficulties to see someone's face or look as if the person you are talking is faceless, and difficulties to see the center of a particular sight. It is dangerous to think that these are all caused by stress, tiredness, or lack of sleep. If you experience such strange phenomena with your eyesight, we recommend you to consult an ophthalmologist immediately. THE AMSLER GRID TEST One of the simplest methods to monitor the health of your macula that you can do by yourself is the Amsler Grid Test. The Amsler Grid is a pattern (either white grid lines on a black background or black grid lines on a white background) consisting of intersecting lines (similar to graph paper) with a black or white dot in the middle. How to use an Amsler Grid (repeat for each eye): Note: If you wear reading glasses, be sure to have them on. Amsler Grid list of 3 items 1. Focus at the center dot on the grid with one eye at a time, covering the other eye with your hand. 2. As you continue to look at the center dot, check to see that all the surrounding lines are straight and all the squares are evenly spaced with no missing areas. 3. If any area on the grid appears bent, distorted, blurred, discolored, or missing, contact your ophthalmologist immediately. list end We recommend that you print this Amsler Grid for your eye checkup. [AI] Computer tips
Bill Gates Steps Down I'm sure most of you have already heard the news, but just in case you didn't see all of the headlines, I'm here today to fill you in! As you can see, Friday, June 27, 2008 was Bill Gates' last day as commander in chief of the Microsoft Corporation. Gates, age 52, decided to retire from the company so that he could focus more on charity work in hopes of fighting disease, reducing poverty and improving education. As he retires, he is ranked the third richest person in the world. Not too shabby, huh?! Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen started the Microsoft company in a garage back in 1975. He always had a fascination with computer codes and he ended up turning that into a software empire that has been going strong for many years now. He will, of course, remain the biggest shareholder for Microsoft and he will still act as the chairman of the company's board of directors. Three other people will fill Gates' shoes, including Ray Ozzie, Craig Mundie and Steve Ballmer. Mr. Gates and his wife Melinda started the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation back in 2000 and he said most of his free time will go into that. Gates is recognized as a genius when it comes to computers, but he feels his time now needs to be focused on humanitarian work. I'm sure we'll still be hearing Bill Gates' name from time to time, but until then, let's wish him a happy retirement. After all, he is the man to thank for all of the Microsoft products you use on a daily basis. Here's to you, Mr. Gates! Addition to this, a workshop on scope of self employment opportunities for visually impaired people where we can have a discussion on new prospective of business rather than focusing on the traditional self-employment areas like STD Booth and etc. Apart from all these workshops, we should conduct some group activity or game, musical performances etc in cultural activity cession to make the convention more luscious and amusing. Re: [AI] bank guidelines
Hello Pranav I believe the confusion arises from the fact that need for attestation of signature of blind person by bank official which I have outlined taking cue from CCPD judgment, is at the time of giving a check book to a visually person and not at the time of delivering a cheque by person to third party or paying utility bill. In other words, visually impaired person would have to keep a cheque book leaves of which bear her/his signature duly attested by bank official and amount and name of payee have to be filled while giving cheque to third party. I think I had mentioned the same in my earlier mail as well and it takes care of all the three situations raised by Pranav. Yes, safe custody of such a signed cheque book is squarely the responsibility of the blind person. I don't know whether it would be willingly undertaken by most but in my view is warranted to avoid peril of forgery and causing needless anxiety to bank officials as we must accept the fact that our signatures are inconsistent at times and extremely easy to forge. I propose this as an interim arrangement till installation of proper biometric systems universally. I am afraid if my labyrinthine way of expression has created any confusion about my position. What if I sign a cheque and give it to a vendor. 2. The bank knows I am blind so demands a bank official to attest my signature? 3. Or, what if I pay a utility bill via a cheque? I appreciate where you are coming from but we will need to find an alternative solution. To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe.
