[AI] TRAI lowers termination charges; mobile tariffs to come

2009-03-09 Thread Renuka Warrier
The Hindu News Update Service

News Update Service
Monday, March 9, 2009 : 1645 Hrs

National
TRAI lowers termination charges; mobile tariffs to come down

New Delhi (PTI): Telecom regulator TRAI on Monday slashed termination charges
by 33 per cent, a move which would result in bringing down the mobile tariffs
for consumers.

Termination charges are paid by one operator to another on whose network the
call ends.

The regulator has reduced the termination charges on local calls to 20 paise a
minute from existing 30 paise.

The new operators such as Datacom, Unitech, Shyam-Sistema and Loop Telecom
among others were demanding 0-10 paise per minute termination charge whereas
the existing GSM operators were opposing any reduction in the charges, fearing
there revenue would take a hit.

The international calls made overseas to India are going to be costlier as the
regulator has increased the termination charge for incoming international
call to 40 paise from existing 30 paise per minute.

Re: [AI] Element of List in HTML

2009-03-09 Thread Roopakshi Pathania

Hi,

You can find more information about navigating web pages with in Jaws Help
Topics.
1. Focus on the JFW window and press F1.
2. Down arrow to locate Using the Internet with Jaws. This is a treeview, so
if you know how to move in it, you shouldn't have any problem.
3. Right arrow once to open the book.
4. You can go through all the topics by pressing enter on a particular topic
and then pressing F6 to reach the text. You can hit F6 again to reach treeview,
or use the link within the page to go to the next page.

Now, for your questions.

Can the element of list be navigated using the tab key?

Only if the list is made up of links, or if the tab order is specified. Lists
generally have textual elements, so its not possible. However, you can use I to
move to the next item within the list and shift+I to move to the previous item.

And when we hear, 'Extended select list box', can
we navigate the page using the letter 'L' and
 'I'?

Yes. But, you need to turn forms mode on to navigate the extended select list
box. And, if the forms mode is on, you can jump to a specific item using the
first letter of an item. For example, in a select language list box, you can
turn forms mode on, and then press E to directly land on English.

In some web pages, we need to switch to forms mode to view
the items in the list. Under such cases, when the letter
'I' is pressed, would Jaws read out the list item?

I expect so.

 Dear Sir

Thanks for putting the link for games that can be played by
the visually impaired people. I tried downloading the games
but couldn’t understand as to how to do it. Though, the
‘Download’ link is available on the website, but on
pressing enter on it, it opens another web page.. After
which, there is no download link or button.

Your valuable suggestion and help is needed. I will be much

Re: [AI] System Tray

Hello,

Normally, programmes running at the background place an icon at the system
tray. In that case you have to remove them from the windows startup list.
antivirus programmes must be allowed in the background. However, many of
the programmes have an option to show up on the system tray. You can check
the preferences or the options menu of the individual item.

Eyeway.org to guide the blind and their families

New Delhi (IANS): A website to create awareness among the blind and
people with low vision has been launched here. The NGO, which took the
initiative, claims

that the portal is the first of its kind in the country.

The website www.eyeway.org provides information on eye disorders,
services, education, rehabilitation, parenting, legal provisions,
recreation and career

guidance to the blind people.

The website has been specially designed to create awareness among the
visually-impaired people on issues related to them. The problem with the
blind people
is not their blindness, but the thinking and attitude of their families,
the society and of themselves, said George Abraham, head of the NGO
Score Foundation,

during the launch of the website here on Wednesday.

The portal is dynamic and has special accessibility features such as
choice of background, font colour, text only options and dynamic search
functions.
It has three sections - informs, inspires and includes, for the wholesome
information requirements of the blind.

The website enables the user to navigate with the help of magnification
and talking software. The software has been bought at a cost of $800 from
the US.

We are continuously researching for information that is inspirational
and empowering visually impaired people, besides looking for
opportunities of reaching
out to more and more people, said Abraham, who is also the chairman of
Association for Cricket for the Blind in India.

The NGO also runs a radio programme in Hindi, which broadcasts from 30
stations of All India Radio. There is also a helpdesk at the foundation
that receives

calls related to various issues that concern the blind people.

There are over 16 million blind people in the country and a further 28
million are with low vision.

Some of the concepts I am looking forward to is the functions and

[AI] value able information

2009-03-09 Thread firoz

MAKES ONE THINK DOESN'T IT? VALUABLE INFORMATION:

  Advice from Snopes

Here is a nice little tidbit of information that came my way this
morning. So if any of you are wondering why I didn't return something to you
that said something like 'if I don't get this back I'llor, 'See how many
flowers you can get back', or

' Forward this to 10 people in the next 5 mins. or something bad will
happen to you', etc.

The following is why I don't send them back.

 Advice from Snopes.com http://snopes. com/

  1) Any time you see an E-Mail that says forward this on to '10' of
your friends, or sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck, good luck, or
whatever, it almost always has an E-Mail tracker program attached that tracks
the cookies and E-Mails of those folks you forward to.

The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is
able to get lists of 'active' E-Mails to use in SPAM E-Mails, or sell to other
spammers.

  2) Almost all E-Mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to
others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send
business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness
Book of Records for the most cards.

All it was, and all any of this type of E-Mail is, is a way to get names
and 'cookie ' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers - - to
validate active E-Mail accounts for their own profitable purposes.

You can do your friends and family members a GREAT favor (PLEASE) by
sending this information to them; you will be providing a service to your
friends, and will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam E-Mails in the
future!

If you have been sending out (FORWARDING) the above kinds of E-Mail,
now you know why you get so much SPAM!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of
listings regardless how inviting they might sound! You may think you are
supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT in the long run. Instead, you will be
getting tons of junk mail later! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich!
Let's don't make it easy for them!

Also: E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other
organization. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed sig nature and
full address of the person signing the petition.

Re: [AI] Member's Gender.

2009-03-09 Thread Amarjit Powar

Sorry, this was sitting in my Draft Folder, so just posting it today.

Hello Amaiyo,
Good thread you picked up for name clarifications. I too am confused over a
lot of East Indian names and paticipants of AI. And Shadab, assumably a
male himself, seems to be even more confused as he has addressed me as Ms
Amarjit in his mail of below. No, dear Shadab, this Amarjit is a male
Amarjit, but I mentioned I had two female cousins who too were named as
Amarjit.

And, Amaiyo is right about Punjabi and particularly Punjabi Sikh names
being used interchangeably for both genders. However, one can always
distinguish the gender as Singh is used by the Sik males and Kaur is used by
Sikh females. More and more Sikhs nowadays are reverting to using
distinctive names e.g. Powar, Pawar, Paur, Gill, Dhillon, Cheema, Aurora,
Dhaliwal, Saini etc. etc. (the list is endless) Since some last names were
connected to the Hindu caste system, the tenth and last Guru of the Sikh
faith, Guru Gobind Singh ji, wanted to create equality and uniformity in the
Sikh faith and bestowed the name Singh for all males, or meaning lion, and
Kaur for all females, or meaning princess. Most committed Sikh still
continue to stand steadfast to ending the last name as Singh e.g. Indian
Prime Minister, His Excellency, Manmohan Singh and His good wife as
Gursharan Kaur.

Comingto the name Kiran, we had two
family friends while living in Africa, and one had his daughter named Kiran
and the other had his son named as Kiran. These names are used
interchangeably. Pretty hard to distinguish untill antefixed by Singh or
Kaur.

Well, so much about Sikh/Punjabi names.

Hello,

I have changed the subject line for focussing on the last thread. First,
let
me tell you that I am a man. Names may be confusing at times. Names like
Kiran and Kanchan may be both male and female names in India. It depends
on
the language and custom of the particular region.

As far as my name is concerned, if I spell my name as Amiya, it becomes
equivalent for both male and female names in Bengali. So I always spell it
as Amiyo. Amarjit in Bengali sounds a male name. So, she must not be
offended if somebody is confused, and I am sure, she is not. I have seen
that Punjabi people do not distinguish between male and female names. We,
Bengali people, are used to calling girls by names ending with an aa or
with an ee sound. I appreciate the Sikh Punjabi tradition of using same
type of names for boys and girls and indicating a girl's name with a
Kaur.

Best regards,

Amiyo Biswas.

One of the greatest challanges in the pool of East Indian names is that

it's

very difficult to distinguish the gender of a person just from the name
as
most names nowadays are becoming unisex. For instance, I've two female
cousins who too go by my first name. To add to the agony, south Indian
mames, no disrespect to my
brethren, are even more difficult to attach to a gender. They are hard
enough even for JAWS to pronounce let alone distinguish the gender. ha

The portal is dynamic and has special accessibility features such as
choice of background, font colour, text only options and dynamic search
functions.
It has three sections - informs, inspires and includes, for the
wholesome information requirements of the blind.

The website enables the user to navigate with the help of magnification
and talking software. The software has been bought at a cost of $800
from the US.

IDs. Contact me of list, in case you require it.

good morning accessindians!

well, a lot of problems has been arising about reading,
understanding,

and working with PDF files.

though, i my self uses Kurzweil 1000, but its expensive, and if you
just want to convert PDF to word (.doc) or RTF format, its shear
wastage of money.

1 of my favorite website did a review of PDF to text conversion, and
you can read this at.

http://blogs.howtogeek.com/mysticgeek/2009/03/05/convert-pdf-files-to-word-documents-a

note, that i'm not sure about accessibility that is provided with
these solutions, and also, if the documents are scanned as an image
of
text and stored, i'm not sure if any of these solutions will work,
but

you can at least give it a try.

ruchir.
