Sorry, this was sitting in my Draft Folder, so just posting it today.

Hello Amaiyo,
Good thread you picked up for name clarifications. I too am confused over a lot of East Indian names and paticipants of AI. And Shadab, assumably a male himself, seems to be even more confused as he has addressed me as Ms Amarjit in his mail of below. No, dear Shadab, this Amarjit is a male Amarjit, but I mentioned I had two female cousins who too were named as Amarjit.
And, Amaiyo is right about Punjabi and particularly Punjabi Sikh names
being used interchangeably for both genders. However, one can always distinguish the gender as Singh is used by the Sik males and Kaur is used by Sikh females. More and more Sikhs nowadays are reverting to using distinctive names e.g. Powar, Pawar, Paur, Gill, Dhillon, Cheema, Aurora, Dhaliwal, Saini etc. etc. (the list is endless) Since some last names were connected to the Hindu caste system, the tenth and last Guru of the Sikh faith, Guru Gobind Singh ji, wanted to create equality and uniformity in the Sikh faith and bestowed the name Singh for all males, or meaning lion, and Kaur for all females, or meaning princess. Most committed Sikh still continue to stand steadfast to ending the last name as Singh e.g. Indian Prime Minister, His Excellency, Manmohan Singh and His good wife as Gursharan Kaur.

Coming to the name Kiran, we had two
family friends while living in Africa, and one had his daughter named Kiran and the other had his son named as Kiran. These names are used interchangeably. Pretty hard to distinguish untill antefixed by Singh or Kaur.
Well, so much about Sikh/Punjabi names.
Amarjit

Hello,

I have changed the subject line for focussing on the last thread. First,
let
me tell you that I am a man. Names may be confusing at times. Names like
Kiran and Kanchan may be both male and female names in India. It depends
on
the language and custom of the particular region.

As far as my name is concerned, if I spell my name as Amiya, it becomes
equivalent for both male and female names in Bengali. So I always spell it
as Amiyo. Amarjit in Bengali sounds a male name. So, she must not be
offended if somebody is confused, and I am sure, she is not. I have seen
that Punjabi people do not distinguish between male and female names. We,
Bengali people, are used to calling girls by names ending with an "aa" or
with an "ee" sound. I appreciate the Sikh Punjabi tradition of using same
type of names for boys and girls and indicating a girl's name with a
"Kaur".

Best regards,

Amiyo Biswas.

Hi Ms Amarjit - thanks for this reply. Even it is very difficult for me
also
to understand who is male and who is female here. So, I will humbly
request
to everybody to please mention your gender. I don't think that this is
off
topic because knowing the genders of our friends is necessary. I am a
male.
By the way mam, 3 3 cousin sisters of the same name in a single family
and
that too of a male name (Amarjit) really makes it extremely curious!!
With
best wishes, Shadab Husain

One of the greatest challanges in the pool of East Indian names is that
it's
very difficult to distinguish the gender of a person just from the name
as
most names nowadays are becoming unisex. For instance, I've two female
cousins who too go by my first name. To add to the agony, south Indian
mames, no disrespect to my
brethren, are even more difficult to attach to a gender. They are hard
enough even for JAWS to pronounce let alone distinguish the gender. ha
ha!

Had Ms Sharma not introduced herself as a female, I too might have been
compelled to assume her to be a he.

Dear Mr. surya

Thanks for your guidance. Now I can download the latest version of
gutenburg
by the steps guided by your good-self.

I am sorry, if I sound rude, but let this be a reminder to all our
friends
at Access India and an introduction to you, being a new member that I am
not
Mister (Mr). I am a female.

Thanks and regards
Vibhu
