Bound by vision of a different kind
Falguni Banerjee

Vashi:
They are blind but their spirits continue to remain high. Their love
for music is
what binds them together. After performing in many cities across
India, this team
of 13 disabled artists is all set to fly to the USA and Canada to
perform before
an enthused crowd.
The confidence of the members of the National Organisation of
Disabled Artists is
mind blowing. Together, they can set the stage on fire with their
heart-touching
performance. We are going to perform in cities like New York,
Washington, Dallas,
New Jersey and Toronto, Vancouver in Canada. It's a dream come true,
said Kishore
Gohil, the troupe's compere and organisation's general secretary.
The team consists of keyboardists Sarfaraz Qureshi and Mahesh Naik,
flutist Kiran
Venkar, Deepak Kamble on the tabla, Augustine Chetiyar on the
octopads and stampler,
Chiran Bhapkar on the congo and dholak. Mangala Sunny and Bipin
Vartak are vocalists
while the show is directed by Suyash Setpal. The team is led by
manager Ramesh Yadav.
Shravan Kumar sings in both male and female voices.
Wherever we have performed, the society has always welcomed us with
open arms. The
response is touching. We are glad to get this opportunity, as it will
open many new
doors for us. There is so much scope for those who want to do good
work, said Bipin
Vartak, a team member. The band sings several popular Hindi and Gujarati songs.
These 13 artists will, most probably, leave for USA on May 11.
Established in December 2000, the organisation aims at creating
employment opportunities
for the artists by conducting such entertainment shows. These
programmes also help
create awareness about disabled artists and promote their talent. By
conducting such
events, the organisation hopes to fight discrimination against
disabled artists.
Initially, each of us struggled to make a mark in the industry. We
then realised
it would be best if we came together, said another team member. We
did not have
our own instruments. A ticket show helped us earn money to buy them,
said Gohil.
No company worked with us initially. Finally, we met the founders of
Rangat Productions.
They agreed to work with us as partners. We then tied up with RICS
Entertainment
for lights, costumes and design. Together, we completed more than 250
shows in India
and abroad in last two years. The organisation has joined hands with
Shriji of Columbus
for their shows in USA and Canada.
They have released three albums. Their first album in Marathi titled
Aaj Mee Ganaraya
Vandile was released by Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray.

[AI] Gayathri proves she has it in her bones

Gayathri proves she has it in her bones

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI) Many students have done remarkably wellin the SSLC
examinations in Kerala, the results of which were out on Friday braving odds
of different kind like poverty, lack of facilities in schools and various
ailments.

But the plight of Gayathri, a student of Sreekaryam government school here, was
different. She `wrote' the SSLC examination with the help of another girl
lying on a stretcher.

Stricken with osteoporosis, a condition in which one's bones lose calcium and
break while trying to move, she has been bed-ridden for the last three years.

But a determined Gayathri prepared for the SSLC examination in right earnest
while bearing the excruciating pain and passed out with two A plus, seven A
grade, two A plus and a B grade in the examinations.

Gayathri wrote the exam telling the answers to a ninth class student, after
listening to each question. She now wants to take science as subject for her
higher secondary studies.

She caught the disease as a one-year old, but this got worse in the last three
years. The meagre salary of Gopakumar, a security employee is the only means
of sustenance for the family and he had already spent most of his earnings for
his daughter's treatment.

S Beena, a teacher with a local self-government institution taught Gayathri by
coming to her home twice a week.

On the request of the family and local organisations, Education Minister M A
Baby had arranged a special ambulance with bed to reach Gayathri to the
examination
centre. Mr. Baby visited her home on Friday and offered sweets. He said all
help would be given for her higher studies.

[AI] Need info of participants of Black - color of music - a Programme on Eenadu Tele Vision - (sorry for off posting)

2009-05-09 Thread srinivasu
Folks -

Firstly appologies for using this platform but I did not find any best
alternative place.

I think ETV (Eenadu Television) is probably first channel (at least in my
knowledge) to organize music competation for visually impaired under the
programme called Black - Color of music - Right now, final round is
broadcasting. (Oops.. I noticed this programme pretty late). The singers
performed really well.

I was told that my parents and my brother are following this programme for
quite some time and they are really impressed.

While we were talking about it, my father came up with an idea (ours is
basically a family of music - though I'm not) that we should organize a
concert at Thyagaraja Aaradhana Utsav - an annual event that happens at
different parts of South India (Including our village Injaram in East
Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh) to pay respect to Shri. Thyagaraja =
the very ancient Guru of Carnatic music.

Folks from Andhra Pradesh, if you are a participant in above ETV programme
or if you know any one who participated, request you to contact me off the
list at sriniv...@srinivasu.org Our family shall be honored to meet up
with these folks. I might approach ETV and request them for this info -
but I thought I might get info from this list much quickly rather than
approaching ETV.

As said earlier, once again appologies for off-topic posting.

Thanks,
Srinivasu

[AI] install all your softwares without hassling to restart

2009-05-09 Thread prateek aggarwal
Folks, tell me, how do you feel when your computer asks for getting
restart whenever you install any software?
Yeh, for some folks this is best technique to know that the software
installed successfully, but if your system is slow, you’d not prefer
installing software if you don’t have much time as rebooting takes lot
of time in slow systems.
Yesterday, while working on a super dawdling system of one of my
friends, it took me 15 minutes to install a simple game.
Ah, that’s smacked, and the time mainly taken in reboot, as he has a
older system (salaron), which has a scrawny processor.
After I stucked by this problem, I’ve then decided to resolve it by
probing some possible way which can make the softwares work correctly
even without restarting it.
Yeh, this was a sturdy job, but what I found after exploring windows
registry and different processes.
When a modification is made to the registry, such as when installing
new software, you are instructed to restart the computer. Well, you
don't have to!
Do this instead:

♦Bring up the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del

♦ Select explorer.exe in the Processes tab

♦Click the End Process button on the bottom right; all windows, the
taskbar and desktop icons disappear! but don't panic...our friend Task
Manager is still
there

♦In menu, click File, New Task (Run...)

♦Type explorer and press Enter (this reloads the explorer.exe process
AND the registry!)

note:
The explorer.exe file is an executable file for Windows Explorer. In
the Microsoft Windows operating system, the explorer.exe file runs and
has a graphical
user interface that you can see when you are opening hard drives or
files. Sometimes, the graphical user interface of the explorer.exe
file is referred
to as Windows GUI shell or Explorer.
The file was created to replace the Windows 3.x File Manager, which
is the older version of the application embedded on previous versions
of
the MS Windows environment. The file is executed when the user
double-clicks on the My Computer desktop icon and the one found in the
Start
menu. The explorer.exe file was initially used only to navigate or
browse files, but as newer versions of Windows were released, it
evolved to being a
file management system that is task-based. Therefore, your whole C
drive gets reloaded, and consequently it saves you from restarting.
Hence you would never want to restart your computer after installation
of a new software.

[AI] Fit despite challenges

2009-05-09 Thread Renuka Warrier

Date:10/05/2009 URL:
http://www.thehindu.com/thehindu/mag/2009/05/10/stories/2009051050230600.htm
Magazine

Well Being

Fit despite challenges

Y. RAMAKRISHNA

People with disabilities need to pay as much attention to their fitness levels
as do others.

Photo: S. Subramanium

Can't ignore it: Focus on quality of exercise and recovery.

Everybody has limitations. Some are visible and some are not. Some are physical
and others are not. To assist those who face physical challenges, scientists
have spent many years researching their challenges and finding ways to assist
them to become self-confident. They need to become self-reliant and independent
and able to participate in physical fitness programmes. Just like everybody
else they have a right to it, too.

Impact on health

It is very easy for a disabled person to become sedentary. This lack of
movement impacts health in various avoidable ways. First of all, with little or
no physical movement, food intake must be regulated. Strictly. In fact, when
someone has a physical challenge, their food consumption must ideally be exactly
half of what an able bodied person eats. Any physical exercise will be highly
beneficial to keep the body healthy and all the other functions operating
normally.

In the past, adolescent athletes in wheelchairs used the same programmes as
able-bodied sprinters. These sessions concentrated on quantity rather than
quality
with very little recovery time between repetitions.

Today, things have changed. It is found that concentrating on low volume
training and long recoveries between repetitions with a major emphasis on
quality
work is a lot better to enhance performance.

The focus is more on quality and recovery in between. This form was earlier
thought to be detrimental. Resistance and weight training improve functional
ability and mobility for people with physical disabilities.

Heart rate monitoring, despite the minor glitches, is still the most widely
used technique for monitoring exercise intensity. It should be included more
widely, including in group classes like aerobics, dancing, yoga, etc.

For those with physical challenges, the trainable muscles are limited and they
may have impaired cardiovascular function. The disabled athlete's anaerobic
threshold may differ from an athlete without disability.

Another factor to be kept in mind is that someone with physical challenges may
be on medication that will limit their body's response to physical exercise.
That, however, must not be an excuse not to exercise.

The writer is Sports Development and Training Manager, FitnessOne India Ltd.

Benefits

Strengthens all muscles.

Helps facilitate the flow of air in and out of the lungs.

Improves blood circulation and reduces risk of blood pressure and clogging of
blood vessels.

Increases total number of red blood cells in the body, facilitating transport
of oxygen quickly and efficiently to the different parts of the body.

Improves mental health, reduces stress and incidence of depression.

Stronger heart improves pumping efficiency and reduces resting heart rate.

Tones muscles throughout the body.
